Montreux gives a couple session two moods in one afternoon: the quiet, sloping lanes of the old town above the station, and the wide, flower-lined quay below, with the Dents du Midi rising straight across the water. The two are close enough to link in a single walk without rushing either one.
This page is the plan for that walk: which spots, in which order, and why starting up in the old town and finishing at the water makes the best use of the afternoon light. For a wider look at the area, including Glion and Chillon Castle, see our Montreux location guide. If a ring is part of the plan, read proposals in Montreux instead — the planning works differently.
Alpiora matches you with an independent photographer reviewed for their couples portfolio, languages and local knowledge. You receive a proposal with their name, the package and the price before anything is booked.
Where the session happens
- 01
Old town of Les Planches
Steep lanes, stone houses and the Rue du Pont bridge over the Baye de Montreux gorge give an intimate, textured start to the session, with soft light for much of the afternoon. It is quieter than the quay below, a good place to settle in before the wider views begin.
Best time: Start here, about two hours before sunset
- 02
Saint-Vincent church terrace
A short climb above the lanes, the esplanade in front of the church looks out over the rooftops to the lake and Chillon in the distance. The elevated view gives a different frame from anything at water level, and the terrace itself is rarely crowded.
Best time: Late afternoon, when the lake below is still lit
- 03
Marché Couvert and Place du Marché
Back down near the station, the open cast-iron market hall gives a quick, striking frame and a natural rain plan if the weather turns. It sits close to the Freddie Mercury statue, which is worth a brief stop, though it stays busy most of the day.
Best time: Early evening, passing through rather than lingering
- 04
Flower quay toward Territet
The palm-lined promenade opens up east of the centre, wider and calmer than the section around the statue, with the Dents du Midi filling the background across the water. This is where the session ends, as the sky colours over the lake.
Best time: The last 90 minutes before sunset
Typically included
- A short planning exchange about date, style and the route above
- A start time calculated from the sunset on your date
- Around 60 minutes of guided photography with walking prompts rather than stiff poses
- Professional editing of a curated selection of images
- A private online gallery with high-resolution downloads for personal use
- A rain plan using the Marché Couvert
Preparation
- Wear shoes with grip for the lanes of Les Planches, which are steep in places; the quay itself is flat.
- Lake blue, white, sand and soft greens photograph well against the water and the flowerbeds along the quay.
- Coordinate rather than match: one patterned piece between you is enough.
- Bring a light layer even in summer; the lakefront cools quickly once the sun drops.
- Mid-tones such as navy or burgundy stand out well in the old town’s stone lanes.
- Leave the large bag at the hotel; a small one the photographer can set aside is easier to work around.
Time of day
Book the session to end at sunset on the quay, when the light runs the length of the lake and the mountains opposite turn warm. In midsummer the sun sets further north, behind the hills above Vevey, so the quay falls into shade a little before the sky does. Early morning, before about 9:00, is the quiet alternative for the old town, though the quay is less atmospheric without the evening colour.
Weather
The Montreux Riviera is sheltered and mild, which is why palm trees grow on the quay. Summer brings the occasional afternoon thunderstorm, and from November to February a layer of low cloud can sit over the lake for days while Glion and the Rochers-de-Naye stay in sunshine above it. If the forecast shows that pattern, your photographer may suggest moving part of the session up to Glion. Light rain can be handled under the Marché Couvert or with umbrellas on the quay, which often photographs beautifully.
Getting there
Montreux is on the main line along the lake, with direct trains taking about 20 minutes from Lausanne and around 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 25 from Geneva Airport. Meet in the old town, a short uphill walk from the station, and finish on the quay, close to the centre and most hotels. Bus 201 links the quay to Chillon in about 15 minutes if you extend the route.

Find My PhotographerFrequently asked questions
How much does a couple photoshoot in Montreux cost?
A couple photoshoot in Montreux starts from CHF 390 for about 60 minutes. A 90-minute session, a sunset slot, a weekend date or a second location such as Chillon Castle raise the price, and the exact figure is in your proposal before you book.
Where is the best place for couple photos in Montreux?
The walk from the old town of Les Planches down through the Saint-Vincent terrace to the flower quay gives the most variety in the least distance: stone lanes and an elevated view, then open water and the Dents du Midi at sunset.
Do we need a permit for a couple shoot in Montreux?
No permit is needed for a private photoshoot on the public quay or in the old town of Montreux. If you extend the session to Chillon Castle, the exterior and the public lakeside path are free to photograph, but the interior has its own rules.
Can we do the session in the morning instead?
Yes. Before about 9:00 the old town lanes are quiet, which suits Les Planches well. The trade-off is the quay, which is generally warmer in colour and more atmospheric in the evening than in the morning.
What if we are not comfortable in front of a camera?
That is normal, and the route is built for it. The first stop is a quiet lane where you simply walk, and the photographer gives small prompts rather than poses. By the time you reach the quay, most couples have stopped thinking about the camera.
What if it rains during our session?
The open Marché Couvert keeps a light-rain session workable, and umbrellas on the quay often photograph beautifully. If the forecast is genuinely poor, your photographer will suggest a new time; how rescheduling works is stated in your proposal.
Can we add Chillon Castle or Glion to the session?
Yes. Chillon is about 45 minutes on foot along the lake or 15 minutes by bus 201, and Glion is a short cogwheel train ride above the town. Either can be added as a second location, offered as a multi-location session from CHF 850.
