Quick answers
- How much does it cost?
- Photoshoot in Lucerne starts from CHF 250. The final price depends on the place, duration, date, time of day, travel and any add-ons such as video, and is stated in your proposal before you book.
- When is the best time?
- Sunrise is the one time the Chapel Bridge is truly yours: book for first light and you have perhaps 90 minutes before the groups arrive.
- Which experiences are available here?
- Couple Photoshoot, Proposal Photography, Honeymoon Photography, Family Photoshoot, Engagement Photography, and Solo Traveler Photoshoot
- Getting there
- Lucerne station is on the lake, a short walk from every spot on this page, with direct trains from Zurich (about 45 minutes) and Bern (about an hour).
- Where does it take place?
- Popular places include Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) and the Water Tower; Old Town squares: Weinmarkt, Hirschenplatz and Kornmarkt; Musegg wall and meadow; Spreuerbrücke and the Reuss riverside. Your photographer suggests the best spot for your date, the light and the crowds.
- How does booking work?
- Send a free request with your place, date and plans. Alpiora checks which photographers are available and replies with a proposal stating the photographer, the package and the exact price. Nothing is booked until you accept.
Lucerne is the most compact photoshoot city in Switzerland. The Chapel Bridge, the painted squares of the Old Town, the Musegg wall and the lake promenade sit inside a circle you can walk in twenty minutes, so a 60-minute session covers three or four genuinely different backdrops without a single tram ride.
The catch is that everyone else knows this too. From about 9:00 the bridges fill with tour groups, and by midday the Kapellplatz is busy until evening. The shoots that look calm in the final gallery are almost always planned around light and crowds: early morning on the Reuss, the Musegg meadow late in the day, the lakefront at dusk.
Most people book here for a surprise proposal in Lucerne, a couple session during a Swiss itinerary, or family photos before or after a boat trip. If you want the mountains in the frame as well, the city is the base for Rigi, Pilatus and the villages on Lake Lucerne.
Photo spots — Lucerne
- 01
Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) and the Water Tower
The covered wooden bridge crosses the Reuss at a diagonal where the river leaves the lake, with the octagonal stone Water Tower beside it. It dates from the 14th century and was largely rebuilt after the fire of 1993. The classic frame is from the Rathausquai or the Seebrücke, with flower boxes along the bridge in summer.
- Best time
- Sunrise to about 8:30, when the bridge is nearly empty. Blue hour for the lit tower.
- Access
- About 5 minutes on foot from Lucerne station. Level, paved, pram-friendly.
- 02
Old Town squares: Weinmarkt, Hirschenplatz and Kornmarkt
Three small squares with painted façades, fountains and guild houses, a few steps from each other. Colour is the reason to come: ochre, red and green walls that suit dark or neutral outfits. The squares are narrow, so the light is soft for much of the day.
- Best time
- Early morning or late afternoon; the squares stay in shade for long stretches, which is flattering for skin.
- Access
- 3–5 minutes from the Chapel Bridge through the pedestrian lanes. Cobblestones: flat shoes help.
- 03
Musegg wall and meadow
The medieval ramparts run along the ridge on the northern edge of the Old Town, with nine towers and an open meadow below them. From the walkway and the Männli tower you look over the rooftops to the lake, Rigi and Pilatus. The meadow is one of the few places in central Lucerne with grass and space around you.
- Best time
- Late afternoon and golden hour, when the sun comes from the west across the city.
- Access
- 10–15 minutes uphill from the Old Town. The wall walk and several towers are open from early April to the start of November; steep tower stairs.
- 04
Spreuerbrücke and the Reuss riverside
The second covered bridge, further downstream, is quieter than the Chapel Bridge and has painted panels under its roof. Beside it the historic needle dam controls the river, and the riverside lanes give you water, old façades and far fewer passers-by.
- Best time
- Morning or late afternoon; workable at midday because the bridge is covered.
- Access
- About 8 minutes' walk downstream along the Reuss from the Chapel Bridge.
- 05
Jesuit Church and Jesuitenplatz
The white Baroque church stands directly on the left bank of the Reuss, facing the Old Town across the water. Its twin onion domes and the wide quay in front give a clean, bright background that works well for elegant outfits and wedding-style portraits.
- Best time
- Morning, when the façade is in soft light and the quay is quiet.
- Access
- 2 minutes from the Chapel Bridge on the station side of the river. Please stay outside during services.
- 06
KKL Luzern and Europaplatz
Jean Nouvel’s culture and convention centre has a huge flat roof that cantilevers out towards the lake. Underneath you get open shade and strong modern lines, useful on bright summer days and for personal branding portraits.
- Best time
- Any time; the roof gives even shade at midday. Blue hour for reflections in the water.
- Access
- Next to Lucerne station, directly on the lake. Busy around concerts and during the summer festival.
- 07
Nationalquai lakefront promenade
The chestnut-lined promenade runs east along the lake from the Schweizerhof towards the Hofkirche, with the Grand Hotel National and the old lakefront hotels behind you and the lake basin, Pilatus and the Alps in front. It suits relaxed walking shots and is the natural setting for a sunset proposal.
- Best time
- Late afternoon to sunset; in autumn and winter the sun sets roughly over the Pilatus side of the lake.
- Access
- 5–15 minutes on foot from the Chapel Bridge along the water. Benches, piers and wide paths.

Seasons
May to October gives the longest light, flower boxes on the Chapel Bridge and outdoor cafés, but also the biggest crowds; July and August are the busiest. April and late October are the calmest warm months. In winter the Old Town is quiet, there is a Christmas market in December, and the Musegg towers are closed. Avoid the week of Lucerne carnival (Fasnacht, starting the Thursday before Ash Wednesday) unless you want masks and marching bands in every frame. Read our month-by-month guide to Lucerne for more.
Time of day
Sunrise is the one time the Chapel Bridge is truly yours: book for first light and you have perhaps 90 minutes before the groups arrive. Late afternoon and sunset belong to the lakefront and the Musegg meadow. Midday works under the KKL roof and in the shaded squares. A sunrise or sunset slot may carry a small surcharge, stated in your proposal.
Weather
Lucerne sits at the edge of the Alps and gets more rain than Zurich or Geneva, often as short showers or summer thunderstorms in the afternoon. The covered bridges, arcades and the KKL roof make a rainy session realistic, and wet cobblestones reflect well. From October to February the lake basin is often under low fog on calm high-pressure days while Rigi and Pilatus sit in sunshine above it; if the forecast shows that pattern, move the shoot up the mountain rather than waiting in the grey. On föhn days (a warm south wind) the air is unusually clear and the Alps look close.
Getting there
Lucerne station is on the lake, a short walk from every spot on this page, with direct trains from Zurich (about 45 minutes) and Bern (about an hour). The Old Town is pedestrian, so plan to walk the session; photographers usually meet you at the Chapel Bridge or in front of the KKL. Boats to Weggis and Vitznau leave from the piers opposite the station, which makes a city shoot easy to combine with a photo tour on the lake or up the mountains.
Good to know
No permit is needed for a private photoshoot in the public streets, bridges and squares. Tripods and flowers are fine; blocking the Chapel Bridge is not, so photographers work around the flow of pedestrians. Drones are a different matter: flights over the city and the lake are restricted, and there is an airfield within a few kilometres, so aerial shots need checking on the FOCA drone map and usually a permit. Churches ask you to stay outside during services. Prices start at CHF 250 for a 30-minute solo session and CHF 390 for a 60-minute couple shoot; see pricing for what changes the figure.
- Book sunrise if the Chapel Bridge matters to you; after 9:00 you share it with hundreds of people.
- Wear flat or block-heeled shoes: the Old Town is cobbled and the Musegg path is steep.
- Solid colours stand out against the painted façades; busy patterns compete with them.
- For a proposal, the lakefront at dusk is quieter and more private than the bridges.
- Check the Musegg opening season before building a plan around the towers.
- Pair a city session with a boat to Weggis or a trip up Rigi if you have a free afternoon.

Find a Photographer in LucerneFrequently asked questions
Where are the best photo spots in Lucerne?
The Chapel Bridge and Water Tower, the painted Old Town squares, the Musegg wall and meadow, the Spreuerbrücke, the Jesuit Church quay, the KKL and the Nationalquai promenade. All of them are within about 20 minutes on foot, so a 60-minute session can include three or four.
How much does a photographer in Lucerne cost?
Sessions start at CHF 250 for 30 minutes and CHF 390 for a 60-minute couple shoot; proposals start at CHF 650. The final price depends on the photographer, date, time of day and duration, and is stated in the proposal you receive.
What time is best to avoid crowds at the Chapel Bridge?
Sunrise to about 8:30. Tour groups usually arrive from around 9:00 and the bridge stays busy until evening, especially from May to October.
Can we do a photoshoot in Lucerne when it rains?
Yes. The covered Chapel Bridge and Spreuerbrücke, the arcades along the Reuss and the KKL roof all keep you dry, and wet stone photographs well. If rain is heavy, your photographer will suggest a new time; how rescheduling works is stated in your proposal.
Do I need a permit for a photoshoot in Lucerne?
Not for a private session in public spaces. Drone flights over the city and lake are restricted and need checking with the FOCA drone map and the relevant authority before you plan them.
Can we combine Lucerne with Rigi or Pilatus in one shoot?
Yes, as a multi-location session from CHF 850. A common plan is the Old Town in the morning, then a boat and cogwheel railway to Rigi for the late afternoon. Mountain sessions follow the Alpine starting price.
