Quick answers

How much does it cost?
Photoshoot in Lake Geneva starts from CHF 390. The final price depends on the place, duration, date, time of day, travel and any add-ons such as video, and is stated in your proposal before you book.
When is the best time?
The Swiss shore faces south, so at midday the light is flat and behind the mountains opposite.
Getting there
Trains from Geneva Airport run along the lake to Lausanne in about 45 minutes, and on to Vevey and Montreux.
Where does it take place?
Popular places include Geneva harbour (La Rade); Nyon castle esplanade; Lausanne-Ouchy quays; Lavaux vineyard terraces. Your photographer suggests the best spot for your date, the light and the crowds.
How does booking work?
Send a free request with your place, date and plans. Alpiora checks which photographers are available and replies with a proposal stating the photographer, the package and the exact price. Nothing is booked until you accept.

Lake Geneva is a crescent about 73 km long, shared between Switzerland on the north shore and France on the south. The Swiss side faces south across the water to the Chablais Alps, so almost every frame here has the same structure: you in the foreground, open water in the middle, mountains on the far side.

What changes along the shore is the character. Geneva is urban, with jetties and the Jet d’Eau. Lausanne climbs steeply from the Ouchy quays. Between Lausanne and Vevey the Lavaux vineyard terraces drop straight into the lake, and at the eastern end Montreux and Chillon Castle sit under steep mountains with palm trees on the promenade.

Trains run along the whole Swiss shore and boats link the towns, so a couple session, a honeymoon shoot or a multi-stop tour is easy to plan without a car.

Photo spots — Lake Geneva

  1. 01

    Geneva harbour (La Rade)

Stone jetties, the Bains des Pâquis lighthouse and the 140-metre Jet d’Eau, with Mont Blanc on clear days. The most urban setting on the lake and the easiest if you fly in.

    Best time
Late afternoon from the right bank, with the sun behind you
    Access
10 minutes on foot from Genève-Cornavin station.
  2. 02

    Nyon castle esplanade

A white castle on a terrace above a small harbour, with a tree-lined promenade and a wide view south over the lake to the Alps. Calmer than Geneva or Lausanne and a good halfway stop.

    Best time
Late afternoon and sunset; weekday mornings for an empty promenade
    Access
Direct trains from Geneva or Lausanne; 10 minutes on foot down from the station. CGN boats stop at the harbour.
  3. 03

    Lausanne-Ouchy quays

A long lakeside promenade with plane trees, the turreted Château d’Ouchy and the Olympic Park gardens. Boats to Évian and along the lake leave from here, so the landing stage and a departing steamer are easy to frame.

    Best time
Early evening in summer; golden hour all year
    Access
Metro m2 from Lausanne station to Ouchy–Olympique in a few minutes.
  4. 04

    Lavaux vineyard terraces

Stone-walled terraces falling to the water between Lutry and Saint-Saphorin, listed by UNESCO since 2007. The strongest landscape on the lake and the one most visitors travel for. See the Lavaux page for individual spots.

    Best time
Evening, spring to late autumn; harvest colours in October
    Access
Regional trains stop at the lakeside villages; the Train des Vignes climbs from Vevey to Chexbres.
  5. 05

    Vevey quay and La Fourchette

A giant fork planted in the water off the promenade, a statue of Charlie Chaplin on the quay and a huge market square behind. Playful rather than romantic, and quieter than Montreux.

    Best time
Morning for calm water; late afternoon for warm light on the square
    Access
Vevey station is 5 minutes from the lake; trains and boats from Lausanne and Montreux.
  6. 06

    Montreux promenade to Chillon

Flowerbeds, palm trees and the Freddie Mercury statue along the quay, then a lakeside path east to Chillon Castle on its rock in the water. The mountains rise directly behind, and in the evening you look west down the whole length of the lake into the sunset. See couple photography in Montreux for a full plan.

    Best time
Sunset, especially from May to September
    Access
Montreux station, then 45 minutes on foot along the lake to Chillon, or a local bus.
  7. 07

On board a CGN paddle steamer

The CGN’s Belle Époque steamers, with varnished wood, brass and open decks, are one of the lake’s most distinctive settings. A session on board is simply a ticketed crossing; the deck at the stern gives the widest view.

    Best time
Evening sailings in summer; most steamer services run in the warmer months
    Access
Board at Geneva, Nyon, Lausanne-Ouchy, Vevey or Montreux. Check the day’s timetable and which vessel sails at cgn.ch.

Best time

Seasons

May to September has the full boat timetable, long evenings and the most reliable weather. Late September and October add the Lavaux grape harvest and golden vines, with fewer visitors on the quays. Winter is quiet and often clear on bise days, with snow on the Alps opposite, but boat services are much reduced and low stratus cloud can cover the western lake for days.

Time of day

The Swiss shore faces south, so at midday the light is flat and behind the mountains opposite. Aim for the last two hours before sunset. From Lavaux, Vevey and Montreux you look west along the lake into the sunset; in Geneva, stand on the right bank so the evening sun lights the harbour. Sunset is around 21.30 in late June and around 16.50 in December.

Weather

The lake has its own winds. The bise is a cold, dry north-easterly that can blow for several days, clearing the air but whipping up waves and switching off the Jet d’Eau. The vaudaire, a warm south-easterly from the Rhône valley, hits the eastern end around Montreux. The joran falls suddenly off the Jura, often ahead of summer thunderstorms. Orange flashing lights on the shore are storm warnings for boats. Summer haze can soften the Alps by afternoon; the clearest views come after rain or with the bise.

Getting there

Trains from Geneva Airport run along the lake to Lausanne in about 45 minutes, and on to Vevey and Montreux. Regional trains stop at the Lavaux villages. The CGN operates boats between the Swiss and French shores, including a year-round crossing between Lausanne-Ouchy and Évian (about 35 minutes; bring a passport or ID). The full lake from Geneva to Lausanne takes over three hours by boat, so most sessions use the train and add one crossing as part of the experience.

Good to know

Much of the Geneva shore lies inside drone restriction zones around the airport, and several communes have their own rules; check the federal drone map on map.geo.admin.ch before you ask for a drone add-on. In Geneva city, the authorities require an authorisation for any photo shoot in public space. The Lavaux vineyards are private working land: stay on the roads and paths, and do not walk into the rows. For a shoot with more than one stop, a photo tour or a longer package is priced differently; see pricing.

  • Pick one base town and one second setting; two stops fit in 90 minutes, three need a longer tour.
  • Check the wind forecast: a strong bise makes open quays and boat decks hard work for hair and dresses.
  • Boats are slower than you think. Use the train to move and the boat as a scene, not as transport.
  • Bring a layer even in summer; it is always cooler on the water than on the promenade.
  • Take ID if you plan to cross to Évian or Thonon, even for a short return trip.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place on Lake Geneva for a photoshoot?

For landscape, the Lavaux terraces between Lutry and Saint-Saphorin. For an elegant promenade and sunset over the water, Montreux and Chillon. For a city session close to the airport, Geneva harbour. Many couples combine Lavaux with Montreux in one evening.

Can we do a photoshoot on a Lake Geneva boat?

Yes: the photographer travels with you as an ordinary passenger, and the open decks of the CGN Belle Époque steamers make a strong setting. Choose a sailing of about an hour, for example between Lausanne and Vevey or Montreux, and check which vessel runs that day. Tickets are paid separately from the session.

When is the best time of year to photograph Lake Geneva?

From May to October, when boats run the full timetable and evenings are long. October is special in Lavaux, with the grape harvest and golden vines. Winter can be very clear with snowy Alps, but expect reduced boat services and possible fog in the west.

How much does a Lake Geneva photoshoot cost?

A one-hour couple session starts from CHF 390, and a honeymoon session from CHF 650. Several stops along the lake in one outing cost more because of travel time. The exact price is stated in the proposal you receive.

Is Lake Geneva good for a proposal?

Yes. A quiet terrace wall in Lavaux or the lakeside path towards Chillon at sunset both work well, with space for the photographer to stay out of sight. Our Lake Geneva and other Swiss lakes guide compares reflections and boat options.

Do we need a car to shoot around Lake Geneva?

No. Trains serve every town on the Swiss shore and the Lavaux villages, and CGN boats connect the main harbours. A car only helps for high vineyard viewpoints above Chexbres, and most vineyard lanes are closed to general traffic anyway.
