Montreux sits where Lake Geneva narrows and the mountains rise almost from the water, which gives a proposal two very different settings within a few minutes of each other: a flat, flower-lined quay with palm trees, and a steep old village and a balcony village above it with the whole lake spread out below. The quay around the Freddie Mercury statue is the busiest single point in town, all day, so most private moments happen a short walk from it rather than on it.

A proposal photographer here arrives before you, waits where a camera looks unremarkable among the other visitors and residents out for a walk, and lets the signal you agreed do the work. Once your partner has answered, they come over and spend the rest of the hour on relaxed portraits along the water or in the old town.

This page is about proposing in Montreux specifically. For the service itself see proposal photography; for every kind of shoot here see our Montreux location guide, and for the fortress along the shore, Chillon Castle.

Where the session happens

  1. 01

    The quay toward Territet

The stretch of promenade between the centre and Territet is wider and calmer than the section around the statue, with benches and flowerbeds where a photographer can wait like any other visitor enjoying the view. The Dents du Midi rise across the water, and the crowds that gather near the Casino thin out noticeably a few hundred metres east.

Best time: The last 90 minutes before sunset, when the light runs along the lake

  2. 02

    Saint-Vincent church terrace, Les Planches

A short, steep climb above the station, the old village of Les Planches has stone lanes that see far fewer visitors than the quay below. The esplanade in front of the church looks out over the rooftops to the lake and Chillon, a quiet, elevated spot where a photographer working from a doorway or the low wall is easy to overlook.

Best time: Late afternoon, when the lake below still catches the sun

  3. 03

    Glion, above the fog line

A short train ride lifts you about 300 metres above the lake to a small village with open views over the whole eastern end of Lake Geneva. It is genuinely quiet compared with the quay, and on days when low cloud covers Montreux, Glion often sits in clear sunshine above it — a natural plan B as well as a spot in its own right. The cogwheel train ride itself is an easy, unremarkable reason to go up.

Best time: Golden hour; also the answer when the lake below is under cloud

  4. 04

Chillon Castle, from the lakeside path

The exterior of the castle can be photographed from the public path at any hour without permission, and the walk there along the shore is quiet compared with central Montreux. The medieval towers against the water and the mountains behind make a dramatic backdrop, and a photographer with a longer lens from further along the path stays well out of the way.

Best time: Late afternoon and evening, when side light reaches the lake-facing walls

Typically included

  • A planning exchange about your partner, the spot and the time of day
  • A map pin and reference photo of exactly where to stop
  • An agreed signal and a fallback position if the spot is taken
  • Hidden coverage of your approach, the question and the reaction
  • Around 45 minutes of couple portraits straight afterwards
  • Edited photographs in a private online gallery; the delivery time is stated in your proposal

Preparation

  • Carry the ring in a soft pouch in a jacket pocket; a hard box shows in every photo of your trousers.
  • Agree one clear signal with the photographer, such as taking your partner’s hand at the railing.
  • Use a cover story that fits Montreux: a walk along the flower quay, the train up to Glion for the view, or a stroll to Chillon Castle.
  • Book dinner for after the golden hour, not before, so you are not rushing the light.
  • Keep a second evening free in case of low cloud, especially from November to February.
  • Check the dates of the Montreux Jazz Festival in July and the Christmas market in December, when the quay is at its busiest.
  • Wear shoes with grip if the old town lanes of Les Planches or Glion are part of the plan; both involve steps and slopes.

Time of day

For privacy, the stretch of quay toward Territet away from the statue, at any time of day the crowds are thinner there. For light, the last 90 minutes before sunset, when the sun runs the length of the lake and the mountains opposite turn warm. In midsummer the sun sets further north, behind the hills above Vevey, so the promenade falls into shade a little before the sky does.

Weather

The Montreux Riviera is sheltered and mild, which is why palm trees grow on the quay. Summer brings the occasional afternoon thunderstorm, and from November to February a layer of low cloud can sit over the lake for days while Glion and the Rochers-de-Naye stay in sunshine above it. If the forecast shows that pattern, moving the moment up to Glion keeps you in the light rather than waiting in the grey. Light rain can be handled under the Marché Couvert or with a neutral umbrella on the quay.

Getting there

Montreux is on the main line along the lake, with direct trains taking about 20 minutes from Lausanne and around 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 25 from Geneva Airport. The cogwheel train to Glion takes about 10 minutes from Montreux; bus 201 reaches Chillon in about 15 minutes, or it is a 45-minute walk along the lake. The photographer travels separately so you never arrive together.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a proposal photographer in Montreux cost?

Proposal photography in Montreux starts from CHF 650 for about an hour, including hidden coverage and portraits afterwards. A weekend date, a summer sunset slot and video all add to that. The exact price is in your proposal before you book.

Where can I propose in Montreux without a crowd?

The quay toward Territet, away from the Freddie Mercury statue, the Saint-Vincent church terrace above the old town, and Glion above the lake are the quietest options. The statue and the centre of the quay are busy for most of the day.

Do we need a permit to propose in Montreux?

No permit is needed for a private proposal shoot on the public quay, in the old town or in Glion. Chillon Castle has its own rules: the exterior and the public lakeside path are free to photograph at any hour, but professional work inside the walls needs the castle’s written authorisation, requested well in advance.

Can I propose inside Chillon Castle?

Most proposals happen outside, on the public path with the castle as a backdrop, which needs no permission. If the inside genuinely matters to you, the castle requires written authorisation requested at least two months ahead, and its December 2025 rules set a fee for wedding-style photography inside; check chillon.ch for current terms.

What if Montreux is under low cloud on the day?

From November to February, low cloud can sit over the lake for days while Glion and the Rochers-de-Naye stay sunny above it. Your photographer can suggest moving the proposal up by cogwheel train if the forecast shows that pattern.

Can I propose on a boat on Lake Geneva?

Yes. On a scheduled CGN boat, including the Belle Époque paddle steamers that run in summer, the photographer travels as an ordinary passenger and works from the open deck. Choose a sailing of about an hour between Montreux and a neighbouring town.

Can a drone film the proposal in Montreux?

Camera drones must be registered with the Federal Office of Civil Aviation and may not fly over crowds; they are banned outright over Chillon Castle and the Grangettes nature reserve at the eastern end of the lake. Check the federal drone map before planning around aerial footage.
