Geneva rewards a couple session that moves. The Old Town sits on a hill just above the water, so a walk from its lanes down to the harbour changes the mood completely in ten minutes: warm stone and quiet squares give way to open water, boats and the Jet d’Eau rising over the bay.

This page is the plan for that walk: which spots, in which order, and why the order matters once the afternoon light starts to move. For a wider look at the city, including Parc des Bastions and Carouge, see our Geneva location guide. If a ring is part of the plan, read proposals in Geneva instead — the planning works differently.

Alpiora matches you with an independent photographer reviewed for their couples portfolio, languages and local knowledge. You receive a proposal with their name, the package and the price before anything is booked.

Where the session happens

  1. 01

    Bourg-de-Four and the cathedral lanes

Cobbled lanes, fountains and café terraces on the hill above the lake give you a warm, textured start. The narrow streets stay in soft light for much of the day, which is a forgiving place to settle in before the wider views begin.

Best time: Start here, about two hours before sunset; any time on overcast days

  2. 02

Jardin Anglais and the flower clock

A short walk downhill brings you to the lakeside garden at the foot of the Old Town, with the flower clock and the Pont du Mont-Blanc framing the harbour behind you. It is busy with day visitors from mid-morning, so a late-afternoon pass works better than a long stop here.

Best time: Late afternoon, moving through rather than lingering

  3. 03

Quai du Mont-Blanc towards the Bains des Pâquis

The right-bank quay gives you open water on one side and the city on the other, with the Jet d’Eau growing larger the further you walk. The jetty and small lighthouse at the Bains des Pâquis are a natural stopping point, and by early evening the summer swimmers have mostly gone home.

Best time: The hour before sunset, with the sun behind you lighting the far bank

  4. 04

    Bains des Pâquis lighthouse

The end of the jetty faces the Jet d’Eau across the harbour, a clean, recognisable frame that works for both wide shots and close portraits. It is the natural point to end the walking part of the session before the light fades.

Best time: The last 30 minutes before sunset

Typically included

  • A short planning exchange about date, style and the route above
  • A start time calculated from the sunset on your date
  • Around 60 minutes of guided photography with walking prompts rather than stiff poses
  • Professional editing of a curated selection of images
  • A private online gallery with high-resolution downloads for personal use
  • A rain plan using the Old Town’s covered lanes and arcaded streets

Preparation

  • Wear shoes that handle cobbles and slopes: the Old Town is steep, and the quay underfoot is smoother but can be uneven near the jetties.
  • Mid-tones work well against Geneva’s pale stone and blue water: navy, olive, cream or rust. Avoid busy patterns, which compete with the painted Old Town façades.
  • Coordinate rather than match: one patterned piece between you is enough.
  • Check the wind forecast: a strong bise makes hair and light fabrics hard to manage on the open quay, so bring pins or a lighter outfit on windy days.
  • Bring a light layer, even in summer. The lakefront cools quickly once the sun drops, and you can take it off for the photographs.
  • Leave the large bag at the hotel; a small one the photographer can set aside is easier to work around.

Time of day

Book the session to end at sunset on the lakefront, when the light is warmest and the Jet d’Eau catches the last colour. In summer the Jet often runs into the evening, so a sunset session becomes a later plan; check the current schedule before booking a very late slot. For quiet Old Town streets without the lakefront finale, early morning before 9:00 is the alternative.

Weather

Geneva’s defining weather is the bise, a cold, dry north-easterly wind that can blow for several days. It clears the air for sharp views of the Alps, but it also stirs up the water and makes the open quay less comfortable for hair and dresses; the Old Town is sheltered and works well on windy days. In late autumn and winter a grey layer of low stratus can sit over the city, and the Old Town’s warm stone photographs well under flat light even then. Summer afternoons can build thunderstorms over the Jura, so an earlier start is usually safer.

Getting there

Trains from Geneva Airport reach Genève-Cornavin in about 6–7 minutes. Meet in the Old Town, a short uphill walk from the Jardin Anglais, and finish at the Bains des Pâquis, about ten minutes on foot from Cornavin station. The yellow Mouettes water taxis cross the harbour if you want to extend the route to the left bank.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a couple photoshoot in Geneva cost?

A couple photoshoot in Geneva starts from CHF 390 for about 60 minutes. A 90-minute session, a sunset slot, a weekend date or a second location raise the price, and the exact figure is in your proposal before you book.

Where is the best place for couple photos in Geneva?

The walk from Bourg-de-Four in the Old Town down to the Jardin Anglais and the Bains des Pâquis gives the most variety in the least distance: warm stone lanes, then open water and the Jet d’Eau at sunset.

Do we need a permit for a couple shoot in Geneva?

The City of Geneva states that any use of public space for a shoot, including a photo session, requires joint authorisation from the city and canton, requested online at least three working days ahead. Ask your photographer how this applies to your session; a small couple shoot is a different scale from a large production, but the rule covers organised sessions.

Can we do the session in the morning instead?

Yes. Before 9:00 the Old Town lanes are close to empty, and the Jardin Anglais is calmer than it is later in the day. The trade-off is the lakefront, which is warmer in colour and generally more atmospheric in the evening.

What if the bise is blowing during our session?

A strong bise makes the open quay windy and can be difficult for hair and light fabrics, but it also clears the air for sharp views of the Alps. Your photographer can shift more of the session into the sheltered Old Town lanes if the wind is strong.

What if we are not comfortable in front of a camera?

That is normal, and the route is built for it. The first stop is a quiet lane where you simply walk and talk, and the photographer gives small prompts rather than poses. By the time you reach the lake, most couples have stopped thinking about the camera.

Can we add Lake Geneva or Carouge to the session?

Yes. A boat on Lake Geneva or a second stop in the pastel-coloured streets of Carouge can be added as a further location. That is offered as a multi-location session from CHF 850.
