Zermatt sits at 1,608 m at the end of the Matter valley, and no petrol cars drive its streets. That changes how a shoot works: you walk, or you take a train, funicular or gondola, and the photographer plans the route around the timetables rather than a car park.
The Matterhorn is visible from much of the village, but the best frames are a few minutes above it. The lakes of the 5-Seenweg and the Riffelsee on the Gornergrat line give you the mountain twice, once in the sky and once in still water, if you arrive before the wind does.
Every shoot here falls under the Alpine starting price of CHF 650, because mountain transport and early starts are part of the job. For proposals and couples there are dedicated pages: proposal photography in Zermatt and couple photoshoots in Zermatt.
Photo spots — Zermatt
- 01
Kirchbrücke (Church Bridge)
The small bridge over the Vispa next to St. Mauritius church is the classic village view: river, rooftops and the Matterhorn straight up the valley. At dawn the summit turns pink before the village gets any sun, so you are photographed in soft shade with a lit peak behind you.
- Best time
- Sunrise and the half hour after; busy with photographers at dawn in summer and winter
- Access
- Five to ten minutes on foot from Zermatt station, flat
- 02
Hinterdorf
The old quarter behind the church, with dark larch-wood barns and granaries raised on stone slabs to keep mice out. The lanes are narrow and shaded, which makes them work at midday when the mountain has clouded over. Keep your voice down: people live here.
- Best time
- Any time; midday and overcast days are fine here
- Access
- A short walk from Bahnhofstrasse; cobbles and some steps
- 03
Stellisee
The best-known reflection lake on the 5-Seenweg, at about 2,537 m. The Matterhorn stands to the south-west, so morning light falls on the face you see and the water is usually calm until mid-morning. Two boulders in the lake give the composition a foreground.
- Best time
- Early morning from mid-June to early October, before the wind rises
- Access
- Sunnegga funicular, then gondola to Blauherd; about 15–20 minutes downhill on foot
- 04
Grindjisee and Leisee
Grindjisee is small, green and ringed by larches and alpine plants, a softer backdrop than the open Stellisee. Leisee sits a few minutes below Sunnegga and is the easiest lake for families, with a play area and a shoreline where swimming is allowed unless signs say otherwise.
- Best time
- Morning for reflections; Leisee works into the afternoon
- Access
- Leisee: short walk or small shuttle lift from Sunnegga. Grindjisee: on the 5-Seenweg, about 2.5 hours for the full loop
- 05
Sunnegga terrace
The funicular station at 2,288 m looks across to the Matterhorn over the valley. It is quick to reach, flat, and has restaurants, so it suits families, older relatives and anyone who does not want to hike in good shoes.
- Best time
- Morning for clear views of the mountain; late afternoon in autumn
- Access
- About four minutes by underground funicular from the valley station near the Vispa
- 06
Riffelsee
A small lake just below Rotenboden on the Gornergrat line, at around 2,757 m, known for the full reflection of the Matterhorn. It is higher and rockier than the Sunnegga lakes and stays frozen or snow-covered well into early summer.
- Best time
- Early morning in calm weather, from about late June to October
- Access
- Gornergrat Bahn to Rotenboden, then about 10–15 minutes downhill on a footpath
- 07
Gornergrat
The summit station at 3,089 m faces the Matterhorn to the west and a ring of glaciers and four-thousanders, including the Monte Rosa massif. The platform is wide, so a photographer can work with the whole panorama even when there are other visitors.
- Best time
- First train of the day; in winter the snow and low sun make midday usable
- Access
- Gornergrat Bahn from the station opposite Zermatt main station, about 33 minutes

Seasons
Summer (late June to September) opens the lakes, the 5-Seenweg and green meadows. Late September and early October bring golden larches, calmer weather and fewer visitors. Winter (December to April) turns the village and Gornergrat white, but the Sunnegga lakes are under snow. May and November are quiet months when some lifts close for maintenance; note that the Gornergrat Bahn is closed from 2 to 14 November 2026 for construction work.
Time of day
Mornings are the strongest time in Zermatt. The Matterhorn catches the first light, the lakes are still, and clouds often build around the summit by midday in summer. Sunset works in the village and at Sunnegga, but the mountain is then more often partly covered. See sunrise versus sunset for the trade-offs.
Weather
At 1,600–3,100 m the temperature drops quickly with height: expect Gornergrat to be around 10 °C colder than the village. The Matterhorn creates its own cloud, so a clear sky in the valley does not mean a clear summit. Your photographer will usually watch the webcams the evening before and in the morning, and a flexible second date is the most useful thing you can bring.
Getting there
Zermatt is car-free. By train, change onto the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn at Visp; the ride up the valley takes a little over an hour. If you drive, park at the Matterhorn Terminal in Täsch and take the shuttle train, which runs every 20 minutes through the day and takes 12 minutes. The Glacier Express connects Zermatt with St. Moritz in about eight hours (reservation required; no service from 11 October to 4 December 2026). In the village, you walk or use the electric buses and taxis.
Good to know
Mountain transport is paid separately: a standard Gornergrat return is around CHF 95–135 in 2026 depending on season, with 50% off on the Half Fare Card or Swiss Travel Pass; check current fares with the railway. The photographer’s own tickets are normally part of the travel costs in your proposal. Drones are not permitted over the village or near cable cars and ski slopes, and within 5 km of the heliport at the village entrance any drone over 250 g needs prior permission from Air Zermatt. If you want aerial shots, say so when you request availability.
- Book the morning: the Matterhorn is most often clear early, and the lakes reflect best before the wind picks up.
- Bring a warm layer even in August; at Gornergrat and Riffelsee it can be close to freezing at dawn.
- Wear shoes you can walk in to Stellisee and Riffelsee and change into smart shoes on the shore.
- Keep a second day free in your trip so the shoot can move if the mountain is hidden.
- Muted colours and deep reds stand out against grey rock and snow; neon and busy prints fight the landscape.
- In winter, ask whether your shoot location is on a ski slope; photographers keep clients off pistes for safety.

Find a Photographer in ZermattFrequently asked questions
How much does a photoshoot in Zermatt cost?
Photoshoots in Zermatt start from CHF 650, the Alpine starting price for 90 minutes. Sunrise starts, lift tickets for the photographer, video and extra time raise the total, and everything is listed in the proposal you receive before booking. See our pricing for the tiers.
Where is the best place in Zermatt to photograph the Matterhorn?
For reflections, Stellisee on the 5-Seenweg and Riffelsee below Rotenboden are the two classic lakes. In the village, the Kirchbrücke over the Vispa gives the best view without a lift ticket. Gornergrat gives the widest panorama, including glaciers. More on the mountain itself is on our Matterhorn page.
Can we do a sunrise shoot at Gornergrat?
Yes, but it depends on the season. The first regular train in summer 2026 leaves at 07:00, which is after sunrise from June to August but close to it in autumn. On selected summer dates the railway has run special sunrise trips with a stop at Riffelsee; check with the Gornergrat Bahn whether they operate on your date.
Is Zermatt good for a photoshoot in winter?
Yes, for the village, the Kirchbrücke and Gornergrat, which the railway serves in winter. The 5-Seenweg lakes are snowed over and not reachable for a normal shoot. Days are short and cold, so sessions are usually planned around midday light or late afternoon.
Can the photographer fly a drone in Zermatt?
Only with permission. Drones are not allowed over the village or near lifts and ski slopes, and near the heliport any drone over 250 g needs prior approval from Air Zermatt. Tell us when you request availability if aerial footage matters, and we will check what is possible.
Do we need a car to reach the shoot locations?
No. Zermatt is car-free and every spot on this page is reached on foot or by rail, funicular or gondola. If you arrive by car, park in Täsch and take the 12-minute shuttle train.
What if the Matterhorn is hidden by clouds on the day?
Your photographer will look at forecasts and webcams and suggest moving the time or date if possible. The village lanes, Hinterdorf and the larch forests still photograph well under cloud. How rescheduling works is stated in your proposal.
