- How long does it take?
- A typical session lasts 1 hour and you receive around 40 edited photos.
- What is included?
- A short planning exchange about the person, the plan and any surprise

- Around 60 minutes of photography at the birthday starting price

- Who is it for?
- Milestone birthdays: 18, 30, 40, 50, 60 and beyond
- A surprise for a partner during a trip
- Friends celebrating together on a weekend away
- Solo travellers spending their birthday abroad
- How does booking work?
- Send a free request with your place, date and plans. Alpiora checks which photographers are available and replies with a proposal stating the photographer, the package and the exact price. Nothing is booked until you accept.
A birthday trip to Switzerland is usually planned months ahead: the hotel, the dinner, the train up the mountain. The photos are often left to whoever is holding a phone. A birthday session gives the day one hour where someone else is looking after the pictures.
The format is flexible. Some people book a solo portrait session on the morning of their 30th or 50th, some surprise a partner, some bring a small group of friends or the whole family. The photographer can also cover the first part of a birthday dinner or a cake moment on a lakeside terrace, as long as the venue agrees.
Residents book it too: a milestone portrait at home in Zurich or Lausanne, somewhere you walk past every week but have never been properly photographed.

Where the session happens
Pick the place that fits the rest of the day. On Lake Lucerne and Lake Geneva, historic paddle steamers run in the warmer months, and a lakeside session before a cruise or dinner works well. Lucerne and Zurich give old-town streets and a waterfront within a few minutes’ walk. For a big birthday in the mountains, Zermatt and the Matterhorn are the obvious choice, and sessions there start from CHF 650. The vineyard terraces of Lavaux suit a relaxed evening with a glass of local wine. Read sunrise or sunset before choosing the hour, and what to wear before packing.
Preparation tips
- Decide early whether the session is a surprise; it changes how the photographer contacts you.
- If you want a cake in the photos, pick one that travels well and bring a lighter; wind by the lake blows out candles quickly.
- Take balloons and decorations away with you afterwards and skip confetti in public places.
- Ask the restaurant before booking coverage of a dinner; some venues do not allow photographers.
- For groups, send the photographer the list of names and who must be in which photos.
- Plan the session before the celebration, not after: people look fresher and the light is usually better.
- Plain, muted colours stand out best against a lake or snow; avoid large logos.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a birthday photoshoot in Switzerland cost?
Birthday sessions start from CHF 390 for about 60 minutes and around 40 edited photos. In Alpine places such as Zermatt or Interlaken the starting price is CHF 650. Larger groups, extra time or evening coverage of a dinner are priced in your proposal.
Can you organise a surprise birthday shoot?
Yes. Tell us it is a surprise when you request, and all communication goes only to you. The photographer can meet you as if by chance, or you can present it as a birthday gift at the start.
Can friends or family join the session?
Yes. Mention the number of people when you request, because groups need more time for individual and group photos. For family birthdays with children, our family photoshoot page has more on pacing.
Can the photographer cover the birthday dinner too?
Often, yes, for the first part of the evening, as long as the venue allows it. Ask the restaurant first, then include the dinner in your request so it is priced in the proposal.
Can we do the session on a boat?
It is possible on public lake boats, including the paddle steamers on Lake Geneva and Lake Lucerne, but space and light on board are limited and the photographer needs a ticket too. Many people prefer a lakeside session before boarding.
What if it rains on the birthday?
The photographer will suggest a covered location or a different time during your stay, and how weather changes are handled is stated in your proposal. Old-town arcades, like those in Bern, and hotel lobbies make good dry alternatives.
