Quick answers
- How much does it cost?
- Photoshoot in St. Moritz starts from CHF 650. The final price depends on the place, duration, date, time of day, travel and any add-ons such as video, and is stated in your proposal before you book.
- When is the best time?
- The Engadine light is clear enough that late morning works, which is unusual in the Alps.
- Which experiences are available here?
- Couple Photoshoot, Luxury Vacation Photography, Proposal Photography, Honeymoon Photography, Family Photoshoot, and Engagement Photography
- Getting there
- St. Moritz is the terminus of the Rhaetian Railway’s Albula line from Chur, which with the Bernina line to Tirano is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2008. The Glacier Express links it with Zermatt in about eight hours (seat reservation required; no service from 11 October to 4 December 2026). Davos is reached by train with a change in Filisur.
- Where does it take place?
- Popular places include Lake St. Moritz shore; St. Moritz Dorf and the leaning tower; Muottas Muragl; Lej da Staz. Your photographer suggests the best spot for your date, the light and the crowds.
- How does booking work?
- Send a free request with your place, date and plans. Alpiora checks which photographers are available and replies with a proposal stating the photographer, the package and the exact price. Nothing is booked until you accept.
St. Moritz climbs a south-facing slope above its lake in the Upper Engadine, a high, wide valley where the air is dry and the light unusually clear. Painters came for that light long before the ski crowd did, and it is still the reason photographs here look crisp even at midday.
The setting changes more with the season than in most Swiss resorts. In summer you have green shores and a chain of lakes towards Maloja; in October the larches turn gold; in winter the lake freezes and hosts horse races and polo on snow.
St. Moritz suits luxury holiday photography, honeymoons and personal branding as much as couples. Every session here starts from the Alpine price of CHF 650.
Photo spots — St. Moritz
- 01
Lake St. Moritz shore
The path around the lake takes about an hour at a slow pace. From the southern shore you look back across the water to the town stacked on its slope, which gives an elegant, quiet frame without crowds. Early mornings in autumn can bring mist on the water.
- Best time
- Morning for calm water; late afternoon for light on the town
- Access
- A few minutes on foot from St. Moritz station; the path is flat
- 02
St. Moritz Dorf and the leaning tower
The village centre has hotel façades, narrow lanes and the leaning bell tower, all that remains of an old church. It works for fashion-led and branding shoots with a luxury-town feel, and it keeps working when the mountains are in cloud.
- Best time
- Morning before the shops open, or blue hour
- Access
- Uphill from the station by escalators, lifts or on foot
- 03
Muottas Muragl
The terrace at 2,456 m looks south-west over the whole chain of Upper Engadine lakes, and the sun sets down that valley. In summer 2026 the last funicular up is at 23:00, so a sunset shoot needs no hike and no night descent on foot.
- Best time
- Sunset and the hour before, June to October; winter afternoons
- Access
- Funicular from Punt Muragl, about 10 minutes; a short train or bus ride from St. Moritz
- 04
Lej da Staz
A small lake in a larch and pine forest between St. Moritz, Celerina and Pontresina, reached only on foot. It is the most intimate setting in the area, with a single lakeside hotel and restaurant and still water in the morning.
- Best time
- Morning; mid to late October for gold larches
- Access
- About 20–30 minutes on forest paths from the St. Moritz lake shore; no car access
- 05
Silvaplana and Sils lakes
The larger lakes towards Maloja give open water, wide skies and, at Sils, the wooded Chasté peninsula. In the afternoon the Maloja wind usually ruffles the water and brings out the kitesurfers on Lake Silvaplana, so reflections are a morning job.
- Best time
- Morning for reflections; October for colour
- Access
- Around 15–20 minutes by bus or car from St. Moritz
- 06
The frozen lake in winter
Once the ice is thick, Lake St. Moritz becomes a white plain with the town above it. In late January and February it hosts the Snow Polo World Cup and the White Turf horse races, which bring a very particular glamour and also crowds and fenced areas.
- Best time
- January to March, midday for bright snow or late afternoon for low light
- Access
- From the lake shore below the town; go on the ice only where it is officially open

Seasons
Summer (late June to September) brings green meadows, long evenings and open lifts. October is the Engadine’s signature month, when the larches turn gold, usually peaking in mid to late October. Winter (December to March) gives snow, frozen lakes and the event season on the ice: in 2026 the Snow Polo World Cup ran on 23–25 January and White Turf on 8, 15 and 22 February. Check the dates for the coming winter before you plan around them.
Time of day
The Engadine light is clear enough that late morning works, which is unusual in the Alps. For reflections, go early before the afternoon wind. For warmth, Muottas Muragl at sunset is the obvious choice. Our guide to honeymoon photography prices shows how a sunset session fits a longer package.
Weather
At 1,800 m and above, St. Moritz is cold: winter mornings well below freezing are normal, and even summer evenings on Muottas Muragl call for a coat. The valley is often sunnier and drier than the north side of the Alps, but the afternoon wind on the lakes is a regular feature from spring to autumn.
Getting there
St. Most spots on this page are reached on foot, by local bus or by the Muottas Muragl funicular.
Good to know
Drones are prohibited within 5 km of Engadin Airport in Samedan and the heliport in St. Moritz-Bad unless you hold written permission, which the airport grants mainly for flights of public interest. In practice, plan a private shoot without a drone. Event days on the lake have tickets, fences and security; outside events, go onto the ice only where it has been declared open. Funicular tickets for Muottas Muragl are paid separately and are usually itemised in your proposal.
- Bring sunglasses and sun cream even in winter; the high-altitude sun and snow are strong.
- For gold larches, plan for mid to late October and keep your date flexible by a few days.
- Neutral colours, camel and cream suit the Engadine palette of stone, snow and larch.
- Book Muottas Muragl for sunset, and have dinner at the top afterwards: the last funicular down is late in summer.
- On event days on the frozen lake, ask your photographer whether a quieter shore is better.

Find a Photographer in St. MoritzFrequently asked questions
How much does a photoshoot in St. Moritz cost?
Photoshoots in St. Moritz start from CHF 650, the Alpine starting price for 90 minutes. Mountain transport, sunset timing, extra locations and video raise the total. Your proposal lists everything before you book; see pricing.
Where is the best sunset spot near St. Moritz?
Muottas Muragl, at 2,456 m, looks straight down the Upper Engadine towards the setting sun and over the lakes. The funicular from Punt Muragl runs late in summer, so you can stay for the whole sunset without hiking down.
When is the best time for a photoshoot in St. Moritz?
October, for the gold larches, and January to March, for snow and the frozen lake, are the most distinctive. Summer is easiest for access and long evenings. Mornings are best for reflections on any lake, before the afternoon wind.
Can we be photographed on the frozen lake?
Yes, in winter once the ice is officially open. During events like White Turf or the Snow Polo World Cup, parts of the lake are fenced and ticketed. Your photographer will know where you can stand on the day.
Can a drone be used in St. Moritz?
Generally not for private shoots. A 5 km no-fly zone applies around Engadin Airport in Samedan and the St. Moritz-Bad heliport, and written permission is required. Permits are granted mainly for flights of public interest.
Can we combine St. Moritz with another place?
Yes. Many couples combine St. Moritz with Davos or with a lake day at Sils. A honeymoon shoot in Switzerland is often split across two stops; ask for a multi-location or photo tour package when you request availability.
