Chillon stands on a rocky islet just off the shore at Veytaux, three kilometres along the lake from Montreux. Seen from the shore towards Montreux, the castle sits in front of the Dents du Midi, with water on three sides — one of the most recognisable images in Switzerland, and the reason most couples come.

The key point for planning: the outside and the inside are two different shoots. The lakeside paths around the castle are public and can be photographed at any hour without permission. Anything professional inside the walls needs the castle’s written authorisation, requested well in advance. Most couple, engagement and proposal sessions therefore stay outside, and that is where the famous views are anyway.

Photo spots — Chillon Castle

  1. 01

The classic view from the Montreux side

From the lakeside promenade north-west of the castle you look south-east: towers, water and the Dents du Midi in one frame. This is the postcard composition, and it works for couples at every distance, from a wide landscape to a close portrait with the castle soft behind.

    Best time
Late afternoon to sunset, when side light from the west reaches the lake-facing walls.
    Access
Public lakeside path, flat, a few minutes on foot from the Chillon bus stop.
  2. 02

The boat pier and the shoreline

Next to the castle, the CGN landing stage and the rocks along the water give you low angles with the castle reflected in calm water. On still mornings and evenings the reflection is the whole picture; when a paddle steamer docks, it becomes part of it.

    Best time
Calm evenings and early mornings, when the lake is flattest.
    Access
Beside the castle, reached from the lakeside path. Stay clear of the pier when boats are docking.
  3. 03

The view from the Villeneuve side

From the path south-east of the castle you look back north-west, with the lake opening towards Montreux behind the towers. It is quieter than the Montreux side and gives a second, less familiar composition. At sunset the castle is backlit — good for silhouettes.

    Best time
Mid-morning for front light; sunset for backlight and silhouettes.
    Access
Lakeside path towards Villeneuve, a few minutes’ walk from the castle entrance.
  4. 04

The approach and the covered entrance bridge

On the land side, a covered wooden bridge crosses the old moat to the entrance, with the castle walls rising directly above. It gives you texture and a sense of arrival, without the lake — useful when the water is grey or the wind is up.

    Best time
Soft light in the morning or on overcast days; busy around opening time and at midday.
    Access
From the road and bus stop, a few steps. Crossing into the castle needs a ticket.
  5. 05

    Inner courtyards

Inside the walls, the courtyards give you stone, wooden galleries and light from above, with the towers around you. They are part of the paid visit and are shared with other visitors, so professional work here needs the castle’s authorisation and must not block the visitor route.

    Best time
The first hour after opening or the last hour before closing, when groups have thinned.
    Access
With a ticket. The courtyards are among the parts of the castle that are easiest to reach.
  6. 06

The underground halls and Bonivard’s prison

The vaulted cellars cut into the rock, where Byron set The Prisoner of Chillon and carved his name into a pillar, are dim, Gothic and atmospheric. Flash and any other lighting are strictly forbidden, so plan for high-ISO, available-light images.

    Best time
Any time; quieter early and late in the day.
    Access
With a ticket; uneven floors and steps.

Seasons

The castle is open every day except 1 January and 25 December, so any season works. Spring and autumn are the calmest and have the softest light; summer is the busiest, with boats calling several times a day and the Montreux Jazz Festival (3–18 July in 2026) filling the region. In winter the Dents du Midi behind the castle are white, which gives the classic view its strongest contrast, but low cloud can sit over the lake for days.

Time of day

For the exterior, book late afternoon to sunset. The castle sits under a steep slope to the east, so it gets direct sun late in the morning, especially in winter, and holds it into the evening. Opening hours in 2026: April–September 9.00–19.00 (last entry 18.00), March and October 9.30–18.00 (last entry 17.00), November–February 10.00–17.00 (last entry 16.00). The outside paths are open at all hours.

Weather

The castle stands at the sheltered eastern end of Lake Geneva, where the climate is mild. Wind from the lake can make the water choppy and spoil reflections; still evenings are more common in summer. In autumn and winter, a layer of low cloud can hide the mountains while the castle stays clear — then the entrance bridge and the courtyards become the better frames.

Getting there

Bus 201 runs along the shore from Vevey, Montreux and Villeneuve every 10–20 minutes and stops at the castle; from central Montreux it takes about 15 minutes. Hourly S-trains stop at Veytaux-Chillon, six minutes on foot. CGN boats call at the castle’s own pier, including Belle Époque paddle steamers in summer. On foot it is about 45 minutes from Montreux along the lake, or 20 minutes from Villeneuve. Parking along the main road is limited to three hours with a permit.

Good to know

According to the castle’s rules (December 2025), you may photograph anywhere inside for private use, without flash or lighting; selfie sticks are not allowed. Professional photography and filming need written authorisation from the castle management, requested at least two months ahead through the forms on chillon.ch and sent to info@chillon.ch. The same rules set a fee of CHF 250 for wedding photography inside, covering entry for the couple and one photographer; shoots outside opening hours cost extra. Drones are banned over the whole site and the neighbouring Grangettes reserve. Commercial use of the castle’s French name and of its views from the Montreux and Villeneuve sides is trademarked, which matters for personal branding or advertising. Ceremonies are not possible here. Adult tickets are around CHF 15 in 2026 and should be booked online — check chillon.ch for current terms.

  • Plan the session outside, on the public paths; ask for authorisation only if the inside is essential to you.
  • If you want the inside, contact the castle at least two months before your date.
  • Book the last two hours of daylight for the Montreux-side view with the Dents du Midi.
  • Soft neutrals, deep blue or burgundy stand out against the pale stone and the lake.
  • Combine the castle with the quay in Montreux; bus 201 links the two in about 15 minutes.
  • Leave the drone at home: flights are banned over the castle and the nearby reserve.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need permission for a photoshoot at Chillon Castle?

Not for the outside: the lakeside paths around the castle are public. For professional photography inside, the castle requires written authorisation requested at least two months ahead, through the forms on chillon.ch. Private photos by visitors are allowed inside without flash.

How much does it cost to photograph inside Chillon Castle?

The castle’s rules of December 2025 set a fee of CHF 250 for wedding photography inside, including entry for the couple and one photographer. Shoots outside opening hours cost extra. These fees are paid to the castle and are separate from your photographer’s price; confirm the current terms with chillon.ch.

What is the best time for photos at Chillon Castle?

Late afternoon to sunset, from the lakeside path on the Montreux side, with the Dents du Midi behind the towers. The castle is in shade early in the morning because of the slope behind it. Early mornings are still good for calm-water reflections from the pier.

Can I propose at Chillon Castle?

Yes — most proposals here happen on the lakeside path or by the pier, where no permit is needed. The photographer waits nearby like any visitor. See proposal photography in Montreux and our list of places where a surprise really works.

Can we fly a drone at Chillon?

No. The castle forbids drones over the whole site, and flights are also prohibited over the Grangettes nature reserve nearby. Exceptions are rare and must be requested in writing at least two months ahead.

How much does a photoshoot at Chillon cost?

A couple photoshoot starts from CHF 390 and proposal photography from CHF 650. Castle tickets or fees, if you shoot inside, come on top. Your proposal states the exact price before you book — see pricing.
