Interlaken is where most proposal trips to the Bernese Oberland are based, and for a good reason: from one hotel you can ask above the town at Harder Kulm, on a meadow facing the Jungfrau, or on the shore of either lake, and still be back for dinner. The hard part is not the view. It is choosing the hour and the exact metre where you stop, so that the moment is yours and not shared with a tour group.

That is the work a local proposal photographer does. Before your date, they agree the spot, the route you will walk, a signal and a fallback with you, and send a map pin and a reference photo. On the day they are in position well before you arrive, dressed like a visitor, with a long lens. Your partner sees one more person photographing the mountains.

Interlaken sits at Alpiora’s Alpine starting price, CHF 650, for a session of about 90 minutes. This page is about proposing in and around the town itself; for the famous pier see proposing in Iseltwald, and for the valleys see Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald.

Where the session happens

  1. 01

Harder Kulm and the Two Lakes Bridge

The most requested proposal spot in town: a platform over the slope at 1,322 m, with Lake Thun on one side, Lake Brienz on the other and the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau straight ahead. It is not private, so the plan is timing and angle. The photographer waits on the terrace or the path above, where a camera draws no attention, and frames you tight against the lakes so other visitors fall out of the picture.

Best time: The last hour before sunset, spring to autumn; evening rides run from 18 April to 25 October in 2026. Check the last funicular down for your date.

  2. 02

    Höhematte at first light

The open meadow in the centre of town frames the Jungfrau between the trees at its southern end. Before 9.00 it is almost empty, and a photographer sitting on a bench with a coffee is invisible. Walk along the northern edge, where the peak lines up behind you, and stop at the tree you both agreed on.

Best time: Shortly after sunrise, before the day visitors and the first paragliders land.

  3. 03

    Bönigen lakeshore

Turquoise Lake Brienz, old wooden houses and small jetties, with a fraction of the people you meet at Iseltwald. The promenade is long enough that you can choose a quiet stretch on the day, and the photographer can wait by a boathouse without standing out.

Best time: Morning for colour in the water; calm, quiet evenings.

  4. 04

    Lake Thun shore at Neuhaus

Low reeds, open water and mountains rising from the far shore. In midsummer the sun sets roughly along the length of the lake, which gives you backlit silhouettes as you kneel. It is a walk rather than a viewpoint, so a stop here looks natural.

Best time: Summer evenings around sunset; still mornings for reflections.

  5. 05

Aare quays and Unterseen old town

Your weather plan. The fast green river and the small square in Unterseen give close, intimate frames that do not need the Jungfrau, and the lanes offer cover when it drizzles. Many proposers keep this in reserve and decide on the day.

Best time: Any time; soft light on overcast days suits it well.

Typically included

  • A planning exchange about your partner, the spot, the route and the timing
  • A map pin and a reference photo of exactly where to stop
  • An agreed signal and a fallback if other people stand in your spot
  • Hidden coverage of the approach, the question and the reaction
  • A relaxed couple session straight afterwards, at the same place or nearby
  • Edited photographs in a private online gallery; delivery time stated in your proposal

Preparation

  • Carry the ring in a soft pouch in a jacket pocket; a hard box shows through trousers in every frame.
  • Give your partner a reason to dress well: a dinner booked in town or a sunset drink on Harder Kulm.
  • Agree the signal in writing: for example, you take off your sunglasses as you reach the tree or the railing.
  • Kneel on the side away from the photographer so your partner’s face is visible.
  • Bring a warm layer for Harder Kulm even in July; it is noticeably cooler at 1,300 m after sunset.
  • Hold a second evening free in case cloud sits on the Jungfrau, and keep the Aare as the rain option.

Time of day

The Jungfrau lies south of town: side-lit in the morning, warm in the evening. For sunset light on the peaks you need height, which means Harder Kulm; on the valley floor the sun disappears behind the ridges before official sunset. For privacy, early morning wins everywhere in town. In midsummer the sun sets after 21.00, in December before 17.00.

Weather

Interlaken is lower and more sheltered than the valleys, so a grey morning in town can still mean clear peaks higher up, and the other way round. Summer afternoons often build cloud over the mountains and clear again towards evening. Your photographer checks the Harder Kulm and Jungfrau webcams with you the evening before and on the day, and chooses between the viewpoint and the river accordingly.

Getting there

Everything on this page is reachable without a car. The Höhematte and the Aare are a short walk from Interlaken West or Interlaken Ost. The Harderbahn funicular leaves from across the Aare near Interlaken Ost and takes about 10 minutes. Bönigen is a short bus ride or the first stop of the Lake Brienz boats; Neuhaus is a flat 30–40 minute walk from Interlaken West through Unterseen. The Iseltwald pier is about 20 minutes away by bus 103.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a proposal photographer in Interlaken cost?

Proposal photography in Interlaken starts from CHF 650 for about 90 minutes, the Alpine floor for the Bernese Oberland. Funicular or boat tickets, sunrise starts, video and extra locations are added and itemised in your proposal. Nothing is booked until you accept it.

Harder Kulm or Iseltwald: which is better for a proposal?

Harder Kulm gives you the lakes and the Jungfrau from above at sunset, with more people around but plenty of room for a photographer to blend in. The Iseltwald pier is intimate and turquoise, but only works at quiet hours because of the turnstile queue. Our Iseltwald proposal guide explains that timing in detail.

Can I propose at the Jungfraujoch?

Yes, but treat it as a day trip with a short, planned moment on the Plateau or the Sphinx terrace. The first trains arrive at the top between about 8.30 and 9.15, it is below freezing even in summer, and the photographer needs a ticket of their own, which adds noticeably to the cost. Drones are prohibited there. See the Jungfraujoch page for tickets and altitude.

Can we do a sunrise proposal in Interlaken?

Yes, on the Höhematte or along the lake shores, which you reach on foot or by the early buses. At dawn the meadow is nearly empty and the Jungfrau takes the first light. Sunrise starts usually carry a surcharge, which your proposal shows.

How does the photographer stay hidden on Harder Kulm?

They go up earlier than you, stand on the terrace or the path above the platform and work with a long lens, like any visitor photographing the view. You agree the exact point where you stop and a signal. Once your partner has answered, they come over and introduce themselves.

What happens if it rains on the evening we planned?

Your photographer looks at the forecast and webcams with you and may suggest another hour, the covered lanes of Unterseen, or a second evening if you have one. Low cloud often lifts towards evening in summer. How rescheduling works is set out in your proposal.

Can we have a drone shot of the proposal?

Plan without one unless it has been checked. Paragliders land on the Höhematte, and the Jungfrau region lists drones as prohibited in Lauterbrunnen and on the Jungfraujoch. Check the federal drone map at map.geo.admin.ch and mention it when you request availability.
