Quick answers

How much does it cost?
Photoshoot in Zurich starts from CHF 250. The final price depends on the place, duration, date, time of day, travel and any add-ons such as video, and is stated in your proposal before you book.
When is the best time?
In summer golden hour falls after 20.00, so a sunset session ends late; the old town is quietest before 9.00. City scenes photograph well in the blue hour, when windows and bridges are lit.
Getting there
Zurich HB is the hub: trains from Zurich Airport take about 10–15 minutes, and most spots are within 15 minutes’ walk of the station or of Bellevue.
Where does it take place?
Popular places include Lindenhof; Münsterhof, Fraumünster and Münsterbrücke; Augustinergasse and St. Peter; Polyterrasse (ETH). Your photographer suggests the best spot for your date, the light and the crowds.
How does booking work?
Send a free request with your place, date and plans. Alpiora checks which photographers are available and replies with a proposal stating the photographer, the package and the exact price. Nothing is booked until you accept.

Zurich packs a lot into a small radius. From the main station you can walk to a medieval hilltop square, cross the Limmat to cobbled lanes, finish on a lake promenade that looks towards the Glarus Alps and still be back at your hotel within the hour. That compactness is why a 60-minute session here can cover three quite different backgrounds.

The city suits couples and proposals as much as personal branding: the old town gives warmth and texture, Zurich-West gives concrete, glass and railway arches. Below are the places photographers actually use, which way they face and when they are quiet.

  1. 01

    Lindenhof

A tree-shaded terrace on the site of a Roman fort, raised above the left bank of the Limmat. It looks east across the river to the Niederdorf rooftops, the twin towers of the Grossmünster and the university domes on the hill. Low walls and lime trees give natural frames, and the giant chessboard adds a local detail.

    Best time
Late afternoon and the hour before sunset, when the sun is behind you and lights the far bank; early morning for an empty square
    Access
About 10 minutes on foot from Zurich HB via Rennweg and the lanes behind it; a few steps, no lift needed from Pfalzgasse
  2. 02

    Münsterhof, Fraumünster and Münsterbrücke

The square in front of the Fraumünster opens onto the Münsterbrücke, the short bridge that links the church to the Grossmünster side. From the bridge you get both churches, the river and the guild houses in one frame. Midday brings tour groups and traffic; weekend mornings are calm.

    Best time
Before 9.00 for empty streets; blue hour when the bridge and facades are lit
    Access
Five minutes from Paradeplatz or Bellevue on foot; trams stop at both
  3. 03

    Augustinergasse and St. Peter

A short lane of painted oriel windows between Bahnhofstrasse and St. Peter, whose clock face is one of the largest in Europe. Narrow and colourful, it works well for walking shots and close portraits. The lane stays in shade for much of the day, which keeps skin tones soft.

    Best time
Any time in overcast weather; early morning in summer before the shops open
    Access
Two minutes from Bahnhofstrasse; level cobbles, easy in most shoes
  4. 04

    Polyterrasse (ETH)

The broad terrace in front of the ETH main building looks west over the old town roofs towards Uetliberg. At sunset the church towers turn into silhouettes against the sky, a view many visitors miss. Students gather here on warm evenings, but the terrace is large enough to find space.

    Best time
Sunset and blue hour, all year
    Access
The Polybahn funicular from Central, or about 10 minutes uphill on foot
  5. 05

    Lake promenade and Zürichhorn

From Bellevue the Utoquai and Seefeld promenades run south-east along the right shore to Zürichhorn park, with jetties, open lawns and the Tinguely sculpture Heureka. Looking back west you see the city across the water; on clear days the Alps appear at the far end of the lake. It is the most relaxed setting for families and longer sessions.

    Best time
Golden hour and sunset, when the light comes across the lake; summer evenings are busy with swimmers
    Access
A flat 20-minute walk from Bellevue, or a tram towards Tiefenbrunnen
  6. 06

    Uetliberg (Uto Kulm)

Zurich’s own hill, about 870 m high, overlooks the whole city and the length of the lake, with the Alps behind on clear days. In late autumn and winter the summit often sits above the low fog that covers the city, which can turn a grey day into a bright one. The observation tower costs a couple of francs.

    Best time
Sunset for Alpenglow on the peaks; sunrise for light rising over the lake; foggy winter days for a sea of cloud
    Access
S10 from Zurich HB in about 20 minutes (during 2026 renovation works it may start at Selnau), then about 10 minutes uphill on foot
  7. 07

Zurich-West: Im Viadukt and Prime Tower

The former industrial district around Hardbrücke has stone railway arches converted into shops, the Prime Tower and wide streets with clean lines. It is the natural choice for personal branding and content work that should look contemporary rather than postcard.

    Best time
Weekday afternoons and evenings; the arches give shade at midday
    Access
Hardbrücke station, one S-Bahn stop from Zurich HB, or tram to Limmatplatz

Best time

Seasons

May to early October gives long evenings, green trees on the Lindenhof and boats on the lake. December has Christmas markets and lights in the old town. November to February often brings a low grey fog layer over the city for days; plan an Uetliberg option or keep to the lanes, where flat light flatters faces.

Time of day

In summer golden hour falls after 20.00, so a sunset session ends late; the old town is quietest before 9.00. City scenes photograph well in the blue hour, when windows and bridges are lit. Weekend mornings are calmer than weekday evenings along the lake.

Weather

Zurich is changeable: summer afternoons can build thunderstorms, and autumn and winter bring persistent fog (Hochnebel) that the sun may not burn off. Föhn days, with warm south wind, give very clear views to the Alps. Photographers usually hold a covered back-up in the old town arcades and passages, and reschedule terms are set out in your proposal.

Getting there

Zurich HB is the hub: trains from Zurich Airport take about 10–15 minutes, and most spots are within 15 minutes’ walk of the station or of Bellevue. Trams are frequent; a city ticket covers them. For Uetliberg take the S10, for Zurich-West the S-Bahn to Hardbrücke. A car is more of a hindrance than a help in the centre.

Good to know

The City of Zurich lets small shoots on public ground go ahead without a permit when they use minimal portable equipment (one camera, one tripod, a hand reflector), last no more than an hour including set-up and involve no more than five people; anything larger needs a permit applied for weeks in advance. Churches restrict photography inside, so plan exteriors. Drones follow federal rules, and the region lies close to Zurich Airport’s controlled airspace: check the official federal drone map before planning any aerial shots, and ask your photographer what is legal on the day.

  • Book a start time at least an hour before sunset in summer so you have light for both the old town and the lake.
  • Wear shoes that handle cobbles and a few flights of steps; the old town is on two small hills.
  • Avoid the lake basin on the Street Parade weekend in August and on big event days unless crowds are part of the plan.
  • On a foggy winter day, ask about moving the session up Uetliberg; it is often sunny above the cloud.
  • Combine the city with a lake or Rhine Falls stop for a longer session; see the options on our pricing page.
  • Bring a light layer even in summer: evenings by the water cool down quickly.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a photoshoot in Zurich cost?

A couple session in Zurich starts from CHF 390 for about an hour, and a proposal from CHF 650. The final price depends on the photographer, duration, date and add-ons such as video. Our guide to what a photographer costs explains the difference.

Do I need a permit for a photoshoot in Zurich?

Not for a typical small session. The City of Zurich requires no permit on public ground when the shoot uses minimal portable equipment, lasts up to an hour including set-up and involves five people or fewer. Larger productions with lights or props need a permit, applied for in advance.

Where is the best place for a proposal in Zurich?

The Lindenhof at the end of the afternoon and the Polyterrasse at sunset are the most popular, because both have space and a view. For more privacy, the lake shore towards Zürichhorn or Uetliberg away from the tower works well. Our page on proposals in Zurich covers hiding spots and timing.

Can a photographer fly a drone in Zurich?

Only where federal rules allow, and much of the area around Zurich is affected by the airport’s controlled airspace and other restrictions. Your photographer checks the official federal drone map for the exact spot and date. If drone footage matters to you, mention it in your request so it can be planned.

What happens if it rains?

Light rain can work in the old town, where arcades, passages and reflective cobbles add atmosphere. In heavy rain or storms photographers usually suggest another time, and the rescheduling terms are stated in your proposal. Umbrellas in a neutral colour photograph better than bright ones.

Can we combine Zurich with another location?

Yes. Zurich pairs naturally with Lake Zurich and the Rhine Falls, about an hour away, or with Lucerne and Rigi for a mountain day. Multi-location sessions start from CHF 850.
