How does booking work?
Send a free request with your place, date and plans. Alpiora checks which photographers are available and replies with a proposal stating the photographer, the package and the exact price. Nothing is booked until you accept.

Interlaken is flat, and that is its advantage for a couple session. Within a 15-minute walk you have an open meadow facing the Jungfrau, a fast turquoise river, the old square of Unterseen and a lakeshore, so the photographer can change the background four times without a lift ticket. Add the Harderbahn funicular and you finish above it all, with Lake Thun on one side and Lake Brienz on the other.

The session is planned as a route rather than a single spot. Most couples start in town in the late afternoon, when the light on the Jungfrau warms up, and end at Harder Kulm for the last hour before sunset. It suits a first shoot: short distances, paved paths, and enough changes of scene that you stop thinking about the camera.

This page is about photographs of the two of you on a trip. If a ring is involved, the planning is different: see proposal photography in Interlaken. For the full list of spots and seasons, our Interlaken location guide goes further.

Where the session happens

  1. 01

    Höhematte

The big meadow in the centre lines up the Jungfrau between the trees at its southern end. From the northern edge the peak sits exactly in the gap, and the open grass gives room for walking shots. Paragliders land here during the day; your photographer will time the frames between them.

Best time: Early morning for an empty meadow; late afternoon for warm light on the Jungfrau

  2. 02

    Aare quays and Unterseen

The river between the two lakes runs green-turquoise on sunny days, and the footbridges give you water on both sides. Across the river, the little square of Unterseen with its church tower is where the closer, quieter portraits happen.

Best time: Late afternoon; the water colour is strongest when the sun is out

  3. 03

Harder Kulm and the Two Lakes Bridge

At 1,322 m, the platform juts out over the slope and looks south to the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau with both lakes in the frame. It is the one spot in Interlaken that keeps the sun after the town has gone into shade.

Best time: The last hour before sunset, spring to autumn

  4. 04

    Bönigen lakeshore

Wooden houses, small jetties and turquoise Lake Brienz, with a fraction of the visitors at Iseltwald. Choose it if you want lake water in the photographs and prefer a relaxed walk to a queue.

Best time: Morning for light on the water; calm evenings

  5. 05

    Lake Thun shore at Neuhaus

A low, open shoreline where the Aare meets Lake Thun, with reeds and the Weissenau castle ruin nearby. In midsummer the sun sets roughly along the length of the lake, which gives long warm backlight.

Best time: Summer sunsets; calm mornings for reflections

Typically included

  • A short planning exchange to fix the route, the meeting point and the sunset time for your date
  • A walked route through two to four settings, from the town to a viewpoint
  • Relaxed direction: walking, talking and small prompts instead of stiff poses
  • Professional editing of a curated selection of photographs
  • A private online gallery with high-resolution downloads for personal use
  • Optional extras quoted in the proposal: sunrise, extra time, video, a second valley

Preparation

  • Bring a warm layer for Harder Kulm; it is noticeably cooler at 1,300 m, even in July.
  • Wear shoes you can walk in on gravel and paved paths, and bring smarter ones in a bag if you like.
  • Choose mid-tones or soft colours; they stand out against green meadow and turquoise water without clashing.
  • Avoid wearing turquoise yourselves if the Aare or Lake Brienz is on the route.
  • Check the last funicular down from Harder Kulm for your date before you book dinner.
  • Keep the morning free for a mountain trip and the evening for the shoot, so you are not carrying outfits up and down.

Time of day

The Jungfrau lies south of town, side-lit in the morning and warm in the evening. On the valley floor the sun disappears behind the ridges well before official sunset, so the classic couple route starts in town about two hours before sunset and ends up on Harder Kulm. Before 9.00 the Höhematte is nearly empty, which makes a morning session the alternative for couples who want the meadow to themselves.

Weather

Interlaken lies lower than the valleys around it, so a grey morning in town can still mean clear peaks above, and the reverse. Summer afternoons often build cloud over the mountains, which matters for the Jungfrau view but less for the Aare and Unterseen. If rain is forecast, the photographer can shift the session to a better hour or work under umbrellas in the old town; how rescheduling works is stated in your proposal.

Getting there

Most sessions start near Interlaken West (close to the Höhematte and the Aare) or Interlaken Ost (Harderbahn and Lake Brienz boats). The Harderbahn valley station is a short walk across the Aare from Interlaken Ost; the ride takes about 10 minutes, and in 2026 the funicular runs from 3 April to 29 November with evening rides from 18 April to 25 October. Bönigen is a short bus ride from Interlaken Ost. Direct trains from Bern take about 50 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best route for a couple photoshoot in Interlaken?

The most common route starts on the Höhematte, crosses the Aare to Unterseen and ends at Harder Kulm by funicular for sunset. It gives you a mountain meadow, turquoise water, an old square and a panorama in about 90 minutes. Your photographer adapts the order to the light on your date.

How much does a couple photoshoot in Interlaken cost?

Couple sessions in Interlaken start from CHF 650 for about 90 minutes, the Alpine starting price. Sunrise starts, video, extra time and a second place such as Lauterbrunnen raise the total. Everything is listed in your proposal before you book.

Is Harder Kulm open in the evening?

In 2026 the Harderbahn offers evening rides from 18 April to 25 October, within a season running from 3 April to 29 November. Outside the evening period, the last descent is earlier, so a winter or late-autumn session stays in town. Check the operator’s timetable for your exact date.

Can we combine Interlaken with Iseltwald or Lauterbrunnen?

Yes. Iseltwald is about 20 minutes by bus and Lauterbrunnen about 24 minutes by train, so either can become the second part of a longer session. Two places are priced as a multi-location session. Mention the idea when you request availability.

What should we wear for a couple shoot in Interlaken?

Something you can walk in, in mid-tones or soft colours, plus a warm layer for Harder Kulm. Avoid large logos and fine stripes. If the route includes the Aare or Lake Brienz, skip turquoise so you do not disappear into the water.

What happens if it rains?

Light rain works well in Unterseen and along the Aare with an umbrella, and cloud often lifts towards evening. If the forecast is poor, the photographer will suggest another time or date. The rescheduling terms are set out in your proposal.
