Basel is built around a bend of the Rhine. The old town and the red sandstone Münster stand on the steep south bank (Grossbasel); across the water, Kleinbasel has a long, low promenade where the city sits on the steps on summer evenings. Between them, four small ferries cross on a cable, pushed only by the current.

That mix of river life and old stone suits couples and families, and the museums, modern architecture and clean streets make Basel a good choice for personal branding. It is also one of the warmest and driest cities in Switzerland, which helps when planning outdoor sessions.

Photo spots — Basel

  1. 01

    Münster and the Pfalz terrace

The cathedral’s red sandstone and coloured roof tiles are Basel’s signature. Behind it, the Pfalz is a shaded terrace high above the Rhine, looking across to Kleinbasel and, on clear days, to the Black Forest hills. The Münsterplatz in front is wide and calm outside markets and events.

    Best time
Late afternoon and evening, when the western sun lights the Kleinbasel bank below; overcast light for the facade
    Access
About 10 minutes on foot from Marktplatz or Barfüsserplatz, uphill on cobbles
  2. 02

    Rhine ferry (Münsterfähre “Leu”)

The small wooden ferry below the Münster hangs from a cable and is pushed across by the current, with no engine. A crossing takes a few minutes and makes one of the most Basel of pictures, with the cathedral rising behind you. There are four ferries in total; each crossing costs around 2 francs in 2026, paid to the ferryman.

    Best time
Morning, when the sun lights the Grossbasel side; late afternoon for warm light on the water
    Access
Steps down from the Pfalz on the Grossbasel side, or from the Kleinbasel promenade; hours vary by ferry and season
  3. 03

    Kleinbasel riverbank (Oberer Rheinweg)

The promenade on the north-east bank looks south-west across the river to the Münster and the old town skyline. Steps lead down to the water, and in summer swimmers float past with their waterproof “Wickelfisch” bags. It is Basel at its most relaxed, and busy on warm evenings.

    Best time
Morning for front-lit views of the old town; summer evenings for atmosphere and silhouettes against the sunset
    Access
Cross the Mittlere Brücke from Schifflände, or take a ferry; flat and pushchair-friendly
  4. 04

    Mittlere Brücke

The city’s historic central bridge links the two halves of Basel, with the small Käppelijoch chapel in the middle. From the bridge you see the Münster upstream and the river flowing towards the harbour. Trams run across it, so timing matters for clean frames.

    Best time
Blue hour, when the bridge and riverbank lights come on
    Access
Tram to Schifflände; the bridge is a two-minute walk from Marktplatz
  5. 05

    Rathaus and Marktplatz

The red town hall with its painted facade and arcaded courtyard is one of Basel’s most photographed buildings. The courtyard murals and stairs give colour and shelter on rainy days. Most mornings the square hosts market stalls, so late afternoon is clearer.

    Best time
Late afternoon and on overcast days; courtyard at any time during opening hours
    Access
In the centre, with trams stopping on the square
  6. 06

    St. Alban-Tal

A quiet corner upstream of the old town, with medieval mill houses along a stream-fed canal, a stretch of the old city wall and green spaces down to the Rhine. It feels like a village and is much less visited than the centre, which suits intimate sessions and families.

    Best time
Morning and late afternoon; soft light under the trees at midday
    Access
About 15 minutes on foot from the Münster along the river, or tram to Kunstmuseum and a short walk down
  7. 07

    Spalentor

One of Basel’s surviving medieval city gates, with a colourful tiled roof and carved stone. It sits on a street of old houses in the west of the old town and works as a single strong backdrop within a longer walk.

    Best time
Morning, when the sun is on the outer side; early weekends for fewer trams and cars
    Access
Tram to Spalentor, or 10 minutes on foot from Marktplatz

Seasons

May to September is river season: the promenade is lively and, from around July, the water is warm enough for locals to swim. Late spring and early autumn give pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds. December brings Christmas markets on the Münsterplatz and Barfüsserplatz. Watch the calendar: during Fasnacht (late winter), Art Basel (June) and the autumn fair the centre is crowded and hotels fill.

Time of day

The Grossbasel riverfront faces north-east, so it is front-lit in the morning and backlit at sunset. The Kleinbasel side is best photographed from the Pfalz in late afternoon. Summer evenings on the Rhine are busy but full of atmosphere; early mornings are quiet everywhere.

Weather

Basel is among the warmer and drier parts of Switzerland, and summers can be hot, which makes early and late sessions more comfortable. Low fog can sit over the Rhine in autumn and winter. For showers there is shelter in the Rathaus courtyard and the arcades of the old town. Rescheduling terms are stated in your proposal.

Getting there

Direct trains from Zurich HB reach Basel SBB in about an hour. From the station, trams take a few minutes to Barfüsserplatz, Marktplatz and Schifflände. EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse, on French soil, is linked to Basel SBB by bus. Hotel guests receive the BaselCard, which includes free public transport during the stay.

Good to know

In Basel-Stadt, small photo sessions with minimal, portable equipment that do not occupy public space need no permit; longer set-ups that take over pavements or squares must be announced or applied for in advance. Rhine swimming is only for strong swimmers who know the rules: stay out of the shipping lane, keep away from the ferries and bridges, and leave the water at the marked exits. Drones require federal authorisation where applicable, and EuroAirport lies close to the city; your photographer checks the official federal drone map before any aerial shots.

  • Plan the ferry crossing into the route; it is the picture people remember.
  • Check dates for Fasnacht, Art Basel and the autumn fair before you book.
  • In summer, start early or late: the old town streets hold the heat.
  • Choose colours that sit well with red sandstone: navy, cream, olive or soft blue.
  • Combine Basel with a trip to the Rhine Falls or Zurich for a longer itinerary.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a photoshoot in Basel cost?

Couple sessions in Basel start from CHF 390, family sessions from CHF 450 and personal branding from CHF 550. The price depends on the photographer, duration, date and extras. Our guide to what a photographer costs explains the factors.

Can we be photographed on a Rhine ferry?

Yes. The ferries are public, and you simply pay the ferryman for the crossing, around 2 francs per adult in 2026. The Münster ferry gives the classic view with the cathedral behind you. Crossings are short, so photographers often ride back and forth or shoot from the bank.

Do I need a permit for a photoshoot in Basel?

Not for a normal small session. The canton allows simple photo work with minimal, portable equipment without a permit as long as it does not occupy public space. Larger productions with set-ups must be announced or applied for in advance.

Where are the best photo spots in Basel?

The Pfalz terrace behind the Münster, the Münster ferry, the Kleinbasel riverbank and the Rathaus are the classics. St. Alban-Tal is quieter and greener, and the Spalentor adds a medieval gate. A 60-minute route can cover three or four of these on foot.

When is the best time of year for photos in Basel?

May to September for river life, and spring or early autumn for mild weather and fewer people. December has Christmas markets. Avoid Fasnacht and Art Basel weeks unless you want the crowds.

How do I get to Basel from Zurich?

Direct trains from Zurich HB take about an hour to Basel SBB, then a short tram ride to the old town. If you stay in a Basel hotel, the BaselCard covers local public transport. You can request availability for your date and we reply personally.
