Lavaux is a strip of terraced vineyards on the north shore of Lake Geneva, stretching about 30 km from the edge of Lausanne towards Chillon. Monks began building the stone walls in the Middle Ages; UNESCO listed the landscape as a World Heritage site in 2007. Rows of vines drop in steps straight to the water, with the Alps of the French shore opposite.

For photographs, the draw is that combination of lines and space: terrace walls lead the eye down to the lake, and you can stand alone on a narrow lane with nothing but vines and water around you. That makes Lavaux one of the strongest places on the lake for a proposal, an engagement session or an elopement.

The villages — Lutry, Cully, Epesses, Rivaz, Saint-Saphorin, with Chexbres above — are all on regional train lines, so you can reach the terraces from Lausanne or Montreux in under half an hour.

Photo spots — Lavaux

  1. 01

Chexbres, the “balcony of Lake Geneva”

The village sits high above the terraces, and the lanes just below it give the widest view in Lavaux: vineyards falling away beneath you, the whole lake beyond and the mountains across the water. The best spot for a sense of scale.

    Best time
Evening, when the terraces catch side light; clear days after rain
    Access
Train des Vignes from Vevey to Puidoux-Chexbres (hourly), then 10–15 minutes on foot.
  2. 02

Grand Tour photo spot on the Route de Vevey

A marked viewpoint of the Grand Tour of Switzerland halfway between Chexbres and Saint-Saphorin, looking over steep terraces to the lake. Easy to find and reliably beautiful, so expect other visitors in summer.

    Best time
Golden hour; weekday mornings for fewer people
    Access
About 20 minutes downhill on foot from Chexbres, or uphill from Saint-Saphorin.
  3. 03

    Saint-Saphorin

A small wine village of stone houses and steep, narrow lanes around its church, almost on the water. It adds texture and intimacy after the wide views higher up, and marks the eastern end of the classic terrace walk.

    Best time
Late afternoon; mornings are very quiet
    Access
Saint-Saphorin station on the lakeside line between Lausanne and Vevey.
  4. 04

    Dézaley terraces

The steepest and most celebrated section, between Epesses and Rivaz, where the walls are tall and the vines almost vertical. Winemakers speak of three suns here: the sky, the reflection off the lake and the heat from the stone walls. Dramatic in the evening, very hot at noon in summer.

    Best time
Last two hours before sunset; avoid midday from June to August
    Access
On foot from Epesses or Rivaz stations, 15–30 minutes along vineyard lanes.
  5. 05

    Cully lakefront

A small harbour, a lakeside promenade and an old centre with wine cellars. Here you are at water level looking back up at the terraces, which gives a completely different frame to the viewpoints above.

    Best time
Evening light on the terraces behind; calm mornings for reflections
    Access
Cully station on the lakeside line; CGN boats also call here in season.
  6. 06

    Grandvaux and Villette

Hamlets on the slope above Cully with a terrace view westward along the lake towards Lausanne. Less visited than Chexbres and a good choice for a quiet proposal.

    Best time
Sunset, especially in spring and autumn
    Access
Grandvaux station on the regional line from Lausanne, or a steep walk up from Villette station.
  7. 07

    Lutry

The western gateway to Lavaux: a medieval centre, a lakeside quay with plane trees and the start of the marked terrace trail. Good as a relaxed first or last stop in a longer session.

    Best time
    Late afternoon and evening
    Access
Lutry station, a few minutes by train from Lausanne; CGN boats call in season.

Best time

Seasons

From late April the vines turn green, and May and June give fresh colour and long evenings. July and August are lush but hot on the terraces, with little shade. The grape harvest usually runs from late September into October, and the vines turn gold in late October and early November — the most photogenic weeks of the year. In winter the vines are bare and brown, but clear days can bring snow on the mountains opposite.

Time of day

The terraces face the lake to the south, so midday light is harsh and flat. Plan the last two hours before sunset: the walls glow and in summer the sun goes down along the lake to the west. Mornings are calm and quiet but the light comes from the east, behind the Alps towards Montreux. Sunset is around 21.30 in late June and around 16.50 in December.

Weather

Lavaux is sunny and sheltered from the north, which is why vines thrive here, but that also means intense heat on summer afternoons. The cold bise can still sweep along the lake on clear days, and the warm vaudaire occasionally blows from the Rhône valley at the eastern end. Summer thunderstorms build in the afternoon; the terraces have no shelter, so keep an eye on the sky. In late autumn and winter, low stratus cloud sometimes covers the lake while Chexbres is in the sun above it.

Getting there

Regional trains on the lakeside line between Lausanne and Vevey stop at Lutry, Villette, Cully, Epesses, Rivaz and Saint-Saphorin; the whole stretch takes about 20 minutes. The Train des Vignes climbs hourly through the vineyards from Vevey to Puidoux-Chexbres. CGN boats call at Lutry and Cully in season, and small tourist trains run through the vineyards from Lutry, Cully and Chexbres. Most vineyard lanes are closed to general traffic, so a car helps little. The marked Terrasses de Lavaux trail from Lutry to Saint-Saphorin is about 11 km, roughly 3.5 hours on foot.

Good to know

The vineyards are private, working land. Stay on the paved lanes and paths, do not walk into the rows or climb the walls, and never pick grapes — especially during the harvest, when tractors and small rack railways use the narrow lanes. There are few toilets or cafés between villages, so bring water. For drones, UNESCO status alone is not a ban, but check the federal drone map on map.geo.admin.ch and cantonal rules for your exact spot. The Lavaux Vinorama wine centre in Rivaz is open year-round and makes a good rain stop. See pricing and our guide to proposal spots in Switzerland.

  • Wear flat shoes with grip: the lanes are steep and the concrete can be slippery after rain.
  • In summer, bring water and plan the session for evening; there is almost no shade on the terraces.
  • Choose clothing that contrasts with green vines, such as white, cream, blue or burgundy.
  • Combine the terraces with the lakefront at Cully or Lutry for two very different frames in one hour.
  • Continue to Chillon Castle or Montreux afterwards for a second setting at sunset.
  • During harvest, be patient with working crews and give way on the lanes.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best viewpoint in Lavaux for photos?

Chexbres gives the widest view over the terraces and the lake, and the Grand Tour photo spot on the Route de Vevey is the classic framed view. For drama, the Dézaley terraces between Epesses and Rivaz are the steepest. Grandvaux is quieter and good for proposals.

When is the best time of year for a Lavaux photoshoot?

Late September to early November, when the harvest is on and the vines turn gold. May and June are also lovely, with fresh green and long evenings. Summer works in the evening, but middays are very hot.

Is Lavaux a good place for a proposal?

Yes, it is one of the strongest proposal locations on Lake Geneva. The narrow lanes let the photographer hide behind a wall or a row of vines, and many spots are quiet on weekday evenings. See proposals in Montreux if you want to combine the terraces with the Riviera. Proposal sessions start from CHF 650.

Can we walk anywhere in the vineyards?

No. The terraces are private working vineyards, so stay on the lanes and marked paths and do not enter the rows or climb walls. This matters most during the harvest. Your photographer will choose spots that respect this.

How do we get to Lavaux without a car?

Take a regional train from Lausanne or Vevey to one of the lakeside villages, or the Train des Vignes from Vevey up to Puidoux-Chexbres. Stations are a short walk from the terraces. A car is rarely useful, as most vineyard lanes are closed to general traffic.

Can we elope in Lavaux?

Many couples hold a symbolic ceremony or vow exchange on the terraces, followed by portraits at sunset. A legal civil marriage has its own requirements. Read our elopement guide for Switzerland for the options.
