Quick answers

How much does it cost?
Photoshoot in Geneva starts from CHF 250. The final price depends on the place, duration, date, time of day, travel and any add-ons such as video, and is stated in your proposal before you book.
When is the best time?
For the classic Jet d’Eau frame, stand on the right bank (Pâquis, Quai du Mont-Blanc) in the late afternoon: the sun is behind you and the Jet and facades glow.
Getting there
Trains from Geneva Airport reach Genève-Cornavin in about 6–7 minutes and continue directly along the lake to Lausanne.
Where does it take place?
Popular places include Bains des Pâquis; Jet d’Eau jetty (Jetée des Eaux-Vives); Jardin Anglais and the Horloge Fleurie; Old Town: Bourg-de-Four and Saint-Pierre Cathedral. Your photographer suggests the best spot for your date, the light and the crowds.
How does booking work?
Send a free request with your place, date and plans. Alpiora checks which photographers are available and replies with a proposal stating the photographer, the package and the exact price. Nothing is booked until you accept.

Geneva wraps around the western tip of Lac Léman, where the lake narrows into the Rhône. Almost every classic frame here uses water: the 140-metre Jet d’Eau, the stone jetties of the harbour, the yellow Mouettes boats crossing between the two banks. On a clear day the Mont Blanc massif appears above the far shore, which is the view most visitors hope for and few plan around.

The city is compact. From Cornavin station you can walk to the Bains des Pâquis in ten minutes, cross the Pont du Mont-Blanc to the Jardin Anglais and climb into the Old Town within a 60-minute session. That makes Geneva one of the easiest cities in Switzerland for a couple photoshoot, a proposal or a family session on a short stay.

What decides the result is less the spot than the conditions: which bank you stand on at which hour, whether the Jet is running, and whether the bise is blowing. The sections below cover all three.

Photo spots — Geneva

  1. 01

    Bains des Pâquis

A public lido on a jetty off the right bank, with a small lighthouse at the end and the Jet d’Eau straight across the harbour. From here you look south-east, so the Jet and the left-bank facades catch warm light in the evening while the sun sits behind you. In summer it is full of swimmers; out of season it is calm, and in winter locals come for the saunas and a fondue at the buvette.

    Best time
Late afternoon to sunset; early morning for an empty jetty with the Jet backlit
    Access
10 minutes on foot from Cornavin station. A small entry fee applies to the bathing area in summer; the jetty walk to the lighthouse is part of the site.
  2. 02

Jet d’Eau jetty (Jetée des Eaux-Vives)

You can walk out along the stone jetty almost to the base of the fountain. The spray drifts with the wind, so check which side is dry before you stand there in a suit or silk. Shot from the jetty looking back, the Jet towers over you; for the whole column in frame, a longer lens from the quay works better.

    Best time
Morning for side light and fewer people; the Jet is not running in strong wind or frost
    Access
Left bank, 15 minutes on foot from the Old Town or 5 minutes from the Jardin Anglais. Mouettes line M2 crosses from Pâquis to Eaux-Vives.
  3. 03

Jardin Anglais and the Horloge Fleurie

The lakeside garden at the foot of the Old Town, with the flower clock at its edge and the Pont du Mont-Blanc framing the harbour. It is the most photographed corner of Geneva and tour groups stop here from mid-morning, so it suits a quick walk-through frame rather than a long session.

    Best time
Before 9.00 or in the last hour of light
    Access
Left bank, 12 minutes on foot from Cornavin across the Pont du Mont-Blanc. CGN boats leave from the Jardin Anglais landing stage.
  4. 04

Old Town: Bourg-de-Four and Saint-Pierre Cathedral

Cobbled lanes, fountains and café terraces on the hill above the lake. Place du Bourg-de-Four gives warm stone and street life; the lanes around Saint-Pierre are quieter and shaded, which helps on bright summer afternoons. The cathedral’s north tower (157 steps) looks over the rooftops to the harbour and the Jet.

    Best time
Morning for empty lanes; any time on overcast days
    Access
A short uphill walk from the Jardin Anglais or Place Neuve. Flat shoes help on the cobbles. The towers have an admission fee and close before the cathedral does.
  5. 05

Parc des Bastions and the Reformation Wall

A long park below the Old Town ramparts, with the Reformation Wall along one side and rows of tall trees. The trees turn yellow in autumn and give soft, even light for families and portraits. The university buildings add a formal backdrop without the crowds of the lakefront.

    Best time
Late October to early November for colour; midday in summer for shade
    Access
Two minutes from Place Neuve (tram and bus stops), 10 minutes down from the Old Town.
  6. 06

    Parc La Grange rose garden

A large lakeside park on the left bank with a renovated rose garden that the city maintains without pesticides. It slopes down towards the water and looks back across the lake to the right bank. In rose season it is one of the most romantic places in the city, and it stays green and spacious the rest of the year.

    Best time
June for the roses; late afternoon for light across the lawns
    Access
About 25 minutes on foot along the quays from the Jardin Anglais, or a few stops by bus towards Eaux-Vives. Mouettes line M2 stops at Eaux-Vives.
  7. 07

    Carouge

A separate town south of the Arve, laid out in the 18th century with low, pastel houses, shaded courtyards and small squares. It looks nothing like the lakefront and works well as a second setting in a longer session, especially for relaxed couple and branding portraits.

    Best time
Weekday mornings or late afternoon; Saturday morning brings the market
    Access
About 15 minutes by tram from the city centre.

Seasons

May and June bring long evenings and the La Grange roses. July and August are busy on the quays and the lido, with the Jet running into the evening. September and October are often the best compromise: softer light, warm water tones and fewer visitors, then the park trees turn gold into early November. Winter is quiet and can be crisp and clear on bise days, but the Jet d’Eau has a maintenance pause each year in late autumn, so check before you build a session around it.

Time of day

For the classic Jet d’Eau frame, stand on the right bank (Pâquis, Quai du Mont-Blanc) in the late afternoon: the sun is behind you and the Jet and facades glow. Mornings belong to the Old Town and the left-bank jetty, when the lanes are empty and the light comes across the water. Sunset is around 21.30 in late June and around 16.50 in December.

Weather

Geneva’s defining weather is the bise, a cold, dry north-easterly wind that funnels down the lake. Bise days are often cloud-free with sharp views of the Alps, but the wind makes hair and dresses unmanageable on the jetties and can switch off the Jet d’Eau. In severe winter episodes, lake spray freezes on railings along the shore. In late autumn and winter, a grey layer of low stratus can sit over the city for days; the Old Town and Carouge work well under it. In summer, afternoon thunderstorms can build over the Jura, so an earlier start is safer.

Getting there

Trains from Geneva Airport reach Genève-Cornavin in about 6–7 minutes and continue directly along the lake to Lausanne. From Cornavin, most spots are within a 15-minute walk. The yellow Mouettes water taxis cross the harbour on four short lines and belong to the same fare network as trams and buses. If you stay in a hotel, ask for the Geneva Transport Card, which covers local public transport including the airport train. CGN lake boats leave from the Jardin Anglais, Molard and Eaux-Vives stages if you want to add Lake Geneva or Lausanne to the day.

Good to know

The City of Geneva states that any use of public space for a shoot, including a photo session, requires joint authorisation from the city and the canton, requested online at least three working days in advance. Ask your photographer how they handle this for your date. Drones: flights within 5 km of the airport runways, within 300 m of official cantonal or municipal buildings and over protected areas need a permit, which rules out most of the city centre; check the federal drone map on map.geo.admin.ch and ge.ch before you request a drone add-on. The Bains des Pâquis charge a small entry fee in summer, and the cathedral towers are ticketed. See pricing for what changes the cost of a session.

  • Look at the forecast wind, not just the rain: a strong bise means no Jet d’Eau and very windy jetties.
  • For Mont Blanc in the background you need a clear day, which is most likely on cool, dry bise days.
  • Wear shoes you can walk in: the Old Town is steep and cobbled, and the jetties are uneven stone.
  • Stay a step back from the Jet on the jetty; the spray moves with the wind and soaks clothes in seconds.
  • Combine a lakeside frame and an Old Town frame in one hour; add Carouge only if you book 90 minutes or more.
  • In winter, plan the session for the middle of the day when the city is out of the fog, or embrace the soft grey light in the Old Town.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place for photos with the Jet d’Eau?

The Bains des Pâquis jetty and the Quai du Mont-Blanc on the right bank give the classic view, with the Jet front-lit in the late afternoon. For a closer, more dramatic frame, walk out on the Jetée des Eaux-Vives on the left bank in the morning. Always check that the Jet is running on your date.

Do I need a permit for a photoshoot in Geneva?

The City of Geneva says any use of public space for a shoot, including photo sessions, needs joint authorisation from the city and canton, requested online at least three working days ahead. Ask your photographer how this applies to your session. Large set-ups with props or equipment may also incur fees.

Can we add drone photos in Geneva?

Rarely in the city centre. Flights within 5 km of the airport runways and within 300 m of official buildings require authorisation, which covers most of the harbour and Old Town. Check the federal drone map and ge.ch, or plan drone images at a location outside these zones.

How long should a Geneva photoshoot be?

Sixty minutes covers the lakefront and the Old Town on foot, from CHF 390. Ninety minutes lets you add the Parc La Grange or the Bastions without rushing. A proposal is usually planned around one well-chosen spot, from CHF 650.

Which time of year is best for a photoshoot in Geneva?

Late May to early October gives the most reliable light and the Jet d’Eau running into the evening. June adds the roses at Parc La Grange, and late October brings gold trees in the parks. Winter works for the Old Town but can be grey or windy.

Can we do a proposal on the Bains des Pâquis jetty?

Yes, and the lighthouse end is a good moment, but in summer the jetty is crowded with swimmers, so an early morning or an autumn evening is more private. Read our page on proposal photography in Geneva for hiding positions and timing.
