Zurich is an easy city to propose in and a hard one to surprise someone in. Everything is close, so your partner will not question a walk from the Bahnhofstrasse up to the Lindenhof; but the same compactness means that the good terraces are shared with tourists, students and locals on their lunch break. The work is in choosing the hour, not just the place.
A proposal photographer here arrives before you, stands where a person with a camera looks normal (and in Zurich that is almost anywhere), and waits for the signal you agreed. Once your partner has answered, they come over and spend the rest of the hour on relaxed portraits of the two of you in the old town or by the water.
This page is about proposing in Zurich specifically. For the service itself see proposal photography; for every kind of shoot in the city, see our Zurich location guide.
Where the session happens
- 01
Lindenhof
The terrace looks east across the Limmat to the Grossmünster, so in the late afternoon the sun is behind you and lights the far bank and your faces at the same time. The photographer can stand by the giant chessboard or on the low wall among other visitors without standing out. Stop at the railing on the river side, not in the middle under the trees, so the towers sit behind you.
Best time: Early morning for an almost empty square; the hour before sunset for warm light
- 02
Polyterrasse (ETH)
The broad terrace in front of the ETH main building faces west over the old-town roofs towards Uetliberg, which makes it Zurich’s sunset proposal spot. The Polybahn funicular from Central is a natural reason to go up. Because you face the sunset, the photographer works from the side and you get silhouettes against the sky; students gather here on warm evenings, but the terrace is large enough to find a corner.
Best time: Sunset and the blue hour after it, all year
- 03
Münsterbrücke at blue hour
From the short bridge between the Fraumünster and the Grossmünster side you have both churches, the river and the guild houses in one frame. Midday is loud with traffic and groups, but at blue hour the facades are lit and the light is kind to faces. The photographer works from the Münsterhof end with a longer lens, so they are not standing next to you on a narrow pavement.
Best time: Blue hour; weekend mornings before 9.00
- 04
Lake promenade to Zürichhorn
The Utoquai and Seefeld shore gives space that the old town lacks: jetties, open lawns and benches where a photographer can sit like anyone enjoying the view. Looking back west you see the city across the water; on clear days the Alps appear at the far end of the lake. Summer evenings bring swimmers, so choose a jetty further from Bellevue.
Best time: Golden hour, when the light comes across the lake
- 05
Wooden footbridge Rapperswil–Hurden
If you want real privacy, the 841-metre boardwalk across the lake from Rapperswil is long enough to find an empty stretch even on a sunny weekend. The photographer walks ahead as a normal walker and waits at an agreed plank; the castle of Rapperswil stays behind you. A day trip to Rapperswil is also an easy cover story.
Best time: Sunset and blue hour; early morning for calm water
- 06
Uetliberg (away from the tower)
Zurich’s hill overlooks the city and the lake, with the Alps behind on clear days. Its real value for a proposal is in late autumn and winter, when the summit often sits in sunshine above the fog that covers the city. Walk a few minutes away from the observation tower and you are much less likely to share the view.
Best time: Sunset for Alpenglow; foggy winter days for a sea of cloud
Typically included
- A planning exchange about your partner, the spot and the time of day
- A map pin and reference photo of exactly where to stop on the terrace or bridge
- An agreed signal and a fallback position if the spot is taken
- Hidden coverage of your approach, the question and the reaction
- Around 45 minutes of couple portraits straight afterwards
- Edited photographs in a private online gallery; the delivery time is stated in your proposal
Preparation
- Carry the ring in a soft pouch in a jacket pocket; a hard box shows in every photo of your trousers.
- Agree one clear signal with the photographer, such as taking your partner’s hand at the railing.
- Use a cover story that fits Zurich: a drink in the old town, the Polybahn up to the view, or a day trip to Rapperswil.
- Book dinner for after the golden hour, not before, so you are not rushing the light.
- Keep a second evening free in case of rain or fog, especially from November to February.
- Check the date for city events such as the Street Parade in August, when the lake basin is packed.
- Wear shoes that handle cobbles and steps; the old town sits on two small hills.
Time of day
For light, the hour before sunset on the Lindenhof or the lake, or sunset itself on the Polyterrasse. For privacy, early morning: before 9.00 the old town is close to empty and your partner is less likely to expect anything. In summer a sunset proposal means a late start, as golden hour falls after 20.00.
Weather
Zurich’s weather changes quickly. Summer afternoons can build thunderstorms, so an evening proposal is often safer than a mid-afternoon one. From November to February a grey fog layer (Hochnebel) can sit over the city for days; the usual answer is to move the proposal up to Uetliberg, where the summit is often in sunshine. In light rain the old-town arcades and passages keep the portraits going, and a neutral umbrella photographs well.
Getting there
Zurich HB is 10–15 minutes by train from the airport, and the Lindenhof is about 10 minutes on foot from the station. The Polybahn climbs from Central to the Polyterrasse; the lake promenade is a flat walk or a short tram ride from Bellevue. The S10 reaches Uetliberg in about 20 minutes (during 2026 works it may start at Selnau), and Rapperswil is about 36 minutes by train. The photographer travels separately so you never arrive together.

Plan My ProposalFrequently asked questions
How much does a proposal photographer in Zurich cost?
Proposal photography in Zurich starts from CHF 650 for about an hour, including hidden coverage and portraits afterwards. Summer sunset slots, weekends, travel outside the city and video add to that. The exact price is in your proposal before you book.
Where can I propose in Zurich without a crowd?
The Lindenhof before 9.00, a jetty towards Zürichhorn, or the boardwalk between Rapperswil and Hurden are the quietest options with a real view. Uetliberg away from the tower works well in autumn and winter. The Polyterrasse is beautiful at sunset but rarely empty.
Do we need a permit to propose on the Lindenhof?
Not for a normal proposal shoot. The City of Zurich lets small shoots on public ground go ahead without a permit when they use minimal portable equipment, last up to an hour including set-up and involve five people or fewer. Decorations, musicians or a larger set-up may need a permit applied for weeks ahead, so mention them in your request.
What if Zurich is foggy on the day?
In autumn and winter, the fog over the city often ends a few hundred metres up, and Uetliberg is frequently in sunshine above it. Your photographer can check the forecast with you and move the proposal there. If the whole region is grey, the lit old town at blue hour is the better choice.
Can I propose on a boat on Lake Zurich?
Yes, on a scheduled ZSG boat the photographer travels as an ordinary passenger and works on the open deck. Board early to claim a corner, and pick a longer trip so there is time to settle. Private charters are possible but are arranged and paid separately.
Can a drone film the proposal in Zurich?
Usually not in the city. Much of the area is affected by Zurich Airport’s controlled airspace and other restrictions under federal rules. If aerial footage matters to you, say so in your request so the photographer can check the official federal drone map for your spot.
How do I get my partner to the Polyterrasse at sunset?
Suggest the Polybahn from Central for the view before dinner; it is a short, ordinary thing to do in Zurich and needs no explanation. The photographer is already on the terrace and knows which corner you will walk to. Aim to arrive about 20 minutes before sunset.
