Rigi stands on its own between three lakes, Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug and Lake Lauerz, which is why its views feel so open: there are no higher peaks close by to block the horizon. From the summit, Rigi Kulm at 1,797 metres, you look across the Swiss Plateau on one side and a long wall of Alps on the other.
For a photoshoot, Rigi has two things going for it. It is gentle: meadows, broad paths and a car-free resort rather than rock and ice, so you can shoot in normal shoes and a dress. And it is easy to reach, year-round, by boat and cogwheel railway from Lucerne, or by cable car from Weggis on Lake Lucerne.
It is one of the most requested places near Lucerne for a marriage proposal, because a sunset at the Känzeli or a sunrise on Kulm feels like an occasion. Couples, honeymooners and families book it as the mountain part of a Swiss photo tour.
Photo spots — Rigi
- 01
Rigi Kulm summit
The top of the mountain, with the historic Hotel Rigi Kulm just below and a 360-degree view: Lake Zug and Lake Lauerz to the north and east, Lake Lucerne to the south, and the Alps from central Switzerland to the Bernese Oberland on the horizon. The large telecom tower is part of the summit; photographers frame around it.
- Best time
- Sunrise, when the light comes over the eastern Alps; sunset for warm light across the Plateau and Lake Zug.
- Access
- About 10 minutes on foot uphill from Rigi Kulm station, the terminus of both cogwheel railways.
- 02
Känzeli viewpoint
A small rocky pulpit on the edge of the slope above Rigi Kaltbad, with the whole western basin of Lake Lucerne below, Bürgenstock in front and Pilatus on the horizon. It is the classic proposal spot on the mountain: compact, dramatic and easy for a photographer to cover from a discreet distance.
- Best time
- Late afternoon to sunset, when the sun goes down in the direction of Pilatus. Winter snow adds a clean foreground.
- Access
- About 10–15 minutes on foot along a well-kept path from Rigi Kaltbad station.
- 03
Rigi Kaltbad village and square
A car-free resort on a sunny terrace at about 1,430 metres, built around a square with Mario Botta’s stone-and-glass Mineral Baths & Spa. The architecture gives clean lines and warm stone; the lawns and benches around the square suit relaxed family photos.
- Best time
- Morning and late afternoon; in winter, the hour before sunset.
- Access
- 10 minutes by cable car from Weggis, or by cogwheel railway from Vitznau. The spa itself is for bathers; photos are taken on the public square outside.
- 04
Panorama trail from Kaltbad to Rigi Scheidegg
A near-level path of about 7 kilometres along the route of a former railway, with the lake on one side for much of the way. It is ideal for walking shots, and even a short stretch from Kaltbad towards Rigi First gives open meadows with the Alps behind you.
- Best time
- Afternoon in summer and autumn; the southern side gets sun most of the day.
- Access
- Starts at Rigi Kaltbad. The full walk takes about 2 hours; Rigi Scheidegg has its own cable car down to Kräbel.
- 05
Rigi Staffel meadows
Between Kaltbad and the summit, Rigi Staffel sits on a broad ridge where the Arth-Goldau and Vitznau lines meet. The alpine pastures here look over Lake Zug and are usually quieter than the summit, with cows and cowbells in summer.
- Best time
- Golden hour, especially in June and September.
- Access
- Cogwheel railway stop, or under an hour on foot uphill from Kaltbad.
- 06
Vitznau–Rigi cogwheel railway
Europe’s first mountain railway opened in 1871, and its red trains still climb from the lakefront at Vitznau. Photos boarding the train, at a window, or with a train passing a meadow tell the story of the journey. On selected summer days historic steam trains run.
- Best time
- Any time; the historic steam trains run on published dates in summer (in 2026, from late May to late September).
- Access
- From Vitznau pier, next to the boat landing. The ride to Rigi Kulm takes about half an hour.

Seasons
June to October gives green meadows, long evenings and the widest choice of paths; September and October often bring the clearest air. Late autumn and winter are the season for the sea of fog: on calm high-pressure days the lakes disappear under a white layer and Rigi stands in sunshine above it. Winter adds snow at Kaltbad and Kulm, with cleared winter walking paths; wear boots. Spring is changeable, with snow patches into April. The railways run all year, but individual lines close for a few weeks of maintenance, usually in spring or November.
Time of day
Sunrise on Rigi Kulm is the mountain’s signature: the light comes up over the Alps to the east. In summer that means staying overnight at the summit or at Kaltbad, since the first trains leave after sunrise; in late autumn and winter, when the sun rises later, an early train can be enough. Sunset at the Känzeli faces the lake and Pilatus. Check the last train or cable car down against the sunset time before you book, or stay the night.
Weather
Rigi is a real mountain: it is often several degrees colder than Lucerne, wind picks up on the summit, and cloud can cover Kulm while Kaltbad is clear, or the reverse. From October to February, fog frequently fills the lake basins on calm high-pressure days; its upper edge often lies between about 800 and 1,500 metres, so Kaltbad and Kulm are usually above it, though not always. Your photographer will check the webcams and forecasts on the morning of the shoot and suggest the better level. In summer, afternoon thunderstorms are common; morning or evening slots are safer.
Getting there
Three ways up, all car-free at the top. From Lucerne, take the boat to Vitznau (about an hour) and the cogwheel railway to Rigi Kulm (about 30 minutes). Or take the boat or bus to Weggis and the cable car to Rigi Kaltbad (10 minutes), then the train to the summit. From the north, trains from Lucerne or Zurich reach Arth-Goldau, where the second cogwheel line climbs to Kulm. The Swiss Travel Pass covers the Rigi railways and cable car in full, which makes the mountain an easy add-on to a city session.
Good to know
Mountain sessions start from CHF 650, the platform’s Alpine starting price, which reflects the travel time up and down; transport tickets for you and the photographer are listed in the proposal. There is no fee to photograph on the public paths. Drones need care: several airfields and wildlife zones lie around the Rigi massif and flying over the lake in the canton of Lucerne has been prohibited without a permit, so check the FOCA drone map and the railway’s rules before bringing one. Snow and ice make some paths slippery from November to April; the railways publish which winter paths are open.
- For a sunrise proposal on Kulm, book a room at the summit and let the photographer arrive the evening before or on the first train.
- Bring a warm layer even in August; the summit is often windy.
- Earth tones and deep blues sit well against green meadows; white works beautifully in snow.
- Check the fog forecast in autumn: a grey day in Lucerne can be a clear day on Rigi.
- Walking shoes with grip beat heels on the Känzeli path; change for the photos.
- Book a round trip via Weggis and Vitznau to see both shores of the lake.

Find My PhotographerFrequently asked questions
Where are the best photo spots on Rigi?
Rigi Kulm for sunrise and 360-degree views, the Känzeli above Rigi Kaltbad for sunset over Lake Lucerne, the Kaltbad square, the panorama trail towards Rigi Scheidegg, the meadows at Rigi Staffel and the cogwheel railway itself. Most are within a short walk of a station.
How much does a photoshoot on Rigi cost?
Sessions on Rigi start from CHF 650, the Alpine starting price, because of the travel time up the mountain. Proposals, longer sessions and sunrise or sunset times can cost more; the exact price and any transport costs are stated in your proposal.
Is Rigi good for a marriage proposal?
Yes. The Känzeli at sunset and Rigi Kulm at sunrise are both well suited, and the paths are easy enough for a surprise. Read our guide to places where a surprise proposal works for cover stories and timing.
Can we see the sunrise on Rigi Kulm without staying overnight?
In late autumn and winter, when the sun rises later, an early train can get you there in time. In summer the sun rises before the first trains, so you would stay at the summit hotel or at Rigi Kaltbad. Check the current timetable on rigi.ch.
Is Rigi open in winter?
Yes. The cogwheel railways and the Weggis cable car run all year apart from short maintenance breaks, and Kaltbad and Kulm have cleared winter paths. Snow photos are beautiful, but bring boots and warm layers.
Is Rigi above the fog?
Often, especially from October to February on calm high-pressure days, when fog lies over the lakes and Rigi stands in sunshine. The fog height varies from day to day, so your photographer checks webcams on the morning of the shoot.
