Zurich photoshoot guide: Altstadt, the lake or Zurich-West

Choosing between the old town, the lake promenade and Zurich-West for a couple, solo or personal branding session, with a day-plan route, what to wear and what to do when it rains.

Couple walking through the Augustinergasse in Zurich with painted oriel windows and cobbled stone underfoot

Zurich fits three quite different photoshoots inside a fifteen-minute walk of each other. The Altstadt gives warm stone, narrow lanes and the Grossmünster towers over the Limmat. The lake promenade opens onto water, Alpine views on a clear day and space for families to spread out. Zurich-West is concrete, glass and railway arches, the natural choice when a picture needs to look urban rather than postcard-pretty.

This guide is about choosing between those three, or moving between them in one session. Our Zurich location page describes each spot individually; here we compare them by occasion, build a day-plan route, and cover what to wear and what to do if the forecast turns. If you are weighing up photographers rather than locations, our separate piece on choosing a photographer as a visitor to Zurich covers that decision instead.

Altstadt, lake or Zurich-West: matching the district to the shoot

Each part of the city suits a different kind of session, and it is worth deciding this before you fix a time of day.

OccasionBest districtWhy
Couple, first visitAltstadtWarm stone, the Lindenhof and Grossmünster, everything within ten minutes on foot
Couple wanting water and spaceLake promenadeZürichhorn and the Seefeld shore give room to walk and relax without traffic
Solo traveller, short slotAltstadtThe Lindenhof and Augustinergasse give strong frames in under 30 minutes
Personal branding or content creationZurich-WestConcrete, glass and railway arches read as contemporary rather than touristic
Family with childrenLake promenade or ZürichhornOpen lawns, benches and no traffic to manage
ProposalLindenhof or the PolyterrasseBoth have space, a view and room for a photographer to stay unobtrusive

A 60-minute couple photoshoot usually covers the Altstadt and a short walk to the lake; a personal branding session is normally kept to Zurich-West alone, since mixing it with the old town tends to blur the contemporary look that is usually the point.

The Altstadt sits on two small hills and is genuinely crowded by mid-morning in summer; everything else on this list is calmer, which is worth remembering if your session has to run in the middle of the day rather than at the edges of it.

A day-plan route through the city

If you want more than one district in a single visit, this route links them with the light in mind, using an evening booking as the anchor.

For a personal branding session, the equivalent route stays entirely within Zurich-West: start at Im Viadukt for texture, move to the open streets near Prime Tower for wider shots, and finish under one of the railway arches if the light gets harsh. Combining the old town with Zurich-West in one booking is possible but rarely worth it — the two locations pull in different visual directions, and most clients get a stronger set by choosing one.

Zurich-West for personal branding and content

Zurich-West exists for a specific job: a picture that needs to look current rather than like a Swiss postcard. The former industrial district around Hardbrücke has stone railway arches converted into shops, the Prime Tower rising over wide, clean streets, and none of the medieval texture that defines the Altstadt.

For personal branding and content creation work, this matters because the backdrop reads as professional and international rather than touristic — useful if the images are for a company website, LinkedIn or a personal portfolio rather than a holiday album. The arches themselves give useful open shade at midday, when the old town's narrow lanes can feel closed-in for a headshot-style set-up, and the wide streets allow for walking shots that a cramped medieval lane cannot.

Weekday afternoons and early evenings work best: the district has genuine office-hours foot traffic that dies down after work, leaving clean, quiet frames without the tourist presence of the lake or the old town. Reach it via Hardbrücke station, one stop on the S-Bahn from Zurich HB, or by tram to Limmatplatz.

A solo session in 30 minutes

A solo photoshoot is the shortest session on the platform, from CHF 250, and Zurich's compactness makes it one of the more efficient cities to use it in. Thirty minutes is enough for one strong location, provided the start time is chosen carefully.

The Lindenhof works well early, before café tables and other visitors fill the terrace: you get the Grossmünster towers across the river with an empty foreground. Augustinergasse is the calmer alternative if you prefer overcast light or a later start, since its narrow lane stays shaded for most of the day regardless of the hour.

Tell the photographer in your request whether the pictures are for yourself, for social media or for a professional profile — a portrait aimed at a profile picture is closer in style to a personal branding session and works better in Zurich-West than in the old town. Many solo travellers feel self-conscious in front of a camera for the first few minutes; walking shots and simple, practical direction help, and a good photographer will lead you through them rather than asking you to simply pose.

The lake promenade for families and longer sessions

The lake end of the city is the most relaxed setting Zurich offers, and it suits families and anyone who wants space rather than architecture. From Bellevue, the Utoquai and Seefeld promenades run south-east to Zürichhorn park, with jetties, open lawns and the Tinguely sculpture Heureka. On clear days the Alps appear at the far end of the water, and looking back towards the city gives a skyline shot that the old town alone cannot.

Children generally do better here than among the crowds of the Altstadt: there is room to run, benches for a break, and nothing narrow or cobbled to navigate with a pram. Golden hour and sunset are the strongest times, though summer evenings bring plenty of swimmers, so a slightly earlier start keeps the water and jetties less crowded.

If you want to go further, Lake Zurich continues well beyond the city with vineyard shores, Rapperswil's castle hill and a long wooden footbridge to Hurden — worth reading about separately if your session allows a half-day out of the centre.

Rain, fog and a plan B

Zurich's weather is genuinely changeable: summer afternoons can build into thunderstorms with little warning, and from November to February a low grey fog layer, locally called Hochnebel, can sit over the city for days at a time without lifting.

Neither rules out a session outright. Light rain works well in the Altstadt, where arcades, passages and wet cobbles add atmosphere rather than spoiling it — a plain umbrella in a neutral colour photographs better than a bright or patterned one. In heavy rain or storms, photographers generally suggest another time within your stay, and how rescheduling works is set out in your proposal.

Fog is the more Zurich-specific problem, and the most useful fix is going up rather than waiting it out: Uetliberg, the city's own hill at about 870 metres, often sits above the Hochnebel layer while the streets below stay grey, turning a flat day into a bright one with genuine Alpine views. If fog is forecast for your date, ask about moving part of the session up the Uetliberg rather than defaulting to an indoor alternative.

What to wear across the three districts

Zurich's three settings pull clothing in slightly different directions, so it is worth thinking about which one you will spend the most time in.

  • Altstadt. Warm stone and painted facades suit calm, solid colours — cream, navy, olive, rust. Busy prints and logos compete with the architecture rather than complementing it.
  • Lake promenade. Against blue water, warm tones stand out more than blue does. A light layer is useful even in summer, since it cools quickly once the sun drops behind the buildings.
  • Zurich-West. Cleaner, more minimal outfits suit the concrete and glass better than florals or heavy patterns, particularly for personal branding work.
  • Shoes. The Altstadt is cobbled and includes a few short flights of steps; flat or block-heeled shoes travel better than thin heels. The lake paths and Zurich-West streets are level and manageable in most footwear.

Our guide to what to wear for a photoshoot goes further into colours and fabrics by season.

What a session in Zurich costs

Zurich is priced as a city location, so a couple session starts from CHF 390 for about an hour, a solo session from CHF 250, and a proposal from CHF 650. Personal branding sessions typically run 90 minutes and start from CHF 550, since they usually involve at least one outfit change.

What changes the final price: the photographer, the date, the time of day and any add-ons such as video or a second location. Combining the Altstadt with the lake or with Lake Zurich further out is usually priced as a multi-location session from CHF 850. Our guide to what a photographer costs in Switzerland explains the wider pricing structure.

Frequently asked questions

Should we photograph the Altstadt, the lake or Zurich-West?

The Altstadt suits a first visit and couple sessions, with warm stone and the Grossmünster within easy walking distance. The lake promenade suits families and anyone wanting open space. Zurich-West is the right choice specifically for personal branding or content work that needs to look contemporary rather than touristic.

Is 30 minutes enough for a solo photoshoot in Zurich?

Yes, if you book an early start at the Lindenhof, before the terrace fills, or choose the shaded Augustinergasse for a calmer, later slot. Both give strong frames within a few minutes of Bahnhofstrasse. Solo sessions start from CHF 250.

What happens if it rains or the city is fogged in?

Light rain works well in the Altstadt, where arcades and wet cobbles add atmosphere. Winter fog, known locally as Hochnebel, is better solved by moving part of the session up Uetliberg, which often sits above the cloud layer in bright sunshine.

Can we combine the Altstadt and Zurich-West in one session?

You can, but the two districts pull in different visual directions — warm and historic versus clean and contemporary — so most clients get a stronger, more consistent set by choosing one and keeping the session there.

Where should a personal branding session take place in Zurich?

Zurich-West, around Im Viadukt and Prime Tower, is the natural setting: railway arches, glass and wide streets that read as professional and current rather than like a tourist photo. Weekday afternoons are calmer than the old town or the lakefront at the same hour.

How much does a photoshoot in Zurich cost?

A couple session starts from CHF 390, a solo session from CHF 250 and personal branding from CHF 550. Combining two districts, or adding Lake Zurich or the Rhine Falls, is usually priced as a multi-location session from CHF 850; see pricing for the full structure.
