The Rhine Falls are 150 metres wide and 23 metres high, and in summer an average of around 600 cubic metres of water a second goes over them. What makes them work for photographs is the setting: Schloss Laufen on the cliff of the south bank, the small Schlössli Wörth on the north bank, a railway bridge upstream and a rock standing in the middle of the falls.
It is a strong place for couples, engagements and families who want energy and scale rather than a quiet lakeside. Proposals work too, if you pick a platform at a quiet hour. Most visitors come on a half-day from Zurich, often combined with Lake Zurich.

Schlössli Wörth and the basin
On the north bank at Neuhausen, the lawns and railings around the little Schlössli Wörth face the full width of the falls, with Schloss Laufen on the cliff to the right and the railway bridge above. This is the classic front-on view, and access to the basin is free. It is also where the boats leave, so the waterside fills from late morning.
- Best time
- Afternoon, when the sun comes from behind you and lights the spray; early morning for an empty shore
- Access
- About 8 minutes on foot from Neuhausen Rheinfall station, with a lift down from the platform
- 02
Schloss Laufen
The castle on the south bank sits directly above the falls. Its courtyard, walls and terrace give a historic frame, and from the top you look down onto the moving water rather than across it. Entry includes the Historama, the panoramic path and the viewing platforms, at around 5 francs for adults in 2026.
- Best time
- Morning and midday, before the day-trip peak; overcast days suit the stone walls
- Access
- Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall station is right below the castle, with a lift during opening hours
- 03
Belvedere path and the Känzeli
From the castle a path and stairs lead down the cliff to platforms that reach out over the falls, ending at the Känzeli, the closest point. You stand in the noise and the spray, which gives dramatic, wet, moving pictures; the panoramic path offers a step-free route to the Belvedere platform. Bring a cover for the camera and expect damp hair.
- Best time
- Summer, when the flow is highest; around midday the sun reaches into the gorge
- Access
- Included in the Schloss Laufen ticket; stairs down to the lowest platforms, panoramic lift available
- 04
Rhine Falls rock (Rheinfallfelsen)
A boat takes you to the rock in the middle of the falls, where you climb more than 100 steps to a small flag-topped platform with water on both sides. It is the most memorable shot here, but space is tight and you stay about 20 minutes. The boat leaves from Schlössli Wörth; from the Laufen side you first cross by ferry.
- Best time
- Spring to autumn when boats run; the first departures are the least crowded
- Access
- Boat from Schlössli Wörth, from around 22.50 francs per person in 2026; not suitable for young children or limited mobility
- 05
Railway bridge footpath (Rheinfallbrücke)
A footpath runs along the stone railway bridge just upstream, linking the two banks. From the bridge you see the river gathering speed towards the edge and the falls from above and behind. It is part of the roughly one-hour walk around the falls.
- Best time
- Late afternoon and evening, when the falls are lit on the published schedule
- Access
- Stairs from both banks; trains pass on the tracks beside you
- 06
Munot, Schaffhausen
The round 16th-century fortress on the hill above Schaffhausen old town has vineyards on its slope and views over the roofs and the Rhine. The painted facades of the old town lie at its foot. It pairs well with the falls for a longer session in two different moods.
- Best time
- Late afternoon light on the vineyards and roofs
- Access
- A few minutes by train from Neuhausen to Schaffhausen, then about 15 minutes on foot through the old town

Seasons
June and July bring the most water from Alpine snowmelt, so the falls are loudest and whitest; that is also peak season for visitors. Spring and September give good flow with fewer people. Winter flow is lower and boats run on a reduced schedule or not at all, but frosty mornings on the banks can be beautiful. On the evening of 31 July the falls host a large fireworks display, with heavy crowds.
Time of day
Arrive before 10.00 to avoid most coach tours. From the Neuhausen side the afternoon sun is behind you, lighting the spray and sometimes throwing a rainbow. In the evening the falls are illuminated according to a published lighting schedule, which makes a blue-hour session possible.
Weather
The falls photograph in almost any weather: the water is white under grey skies too. Near the platforms the spray soaks you in minutes, so bring a light rain jacket and protect clothes you care about. Low fog is common in autumn and winter; storms and very high water can close platforms or stop the boats. Rescheduling terms are stated in your proposal.
Getting there
From Zurich HB allow about 50–60 minutes by train, usually with a change in Winterthur, to Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall (south bank) or Neuhausen Rheinfall (north bank). Zurich Airport lies on the way, with similar journey times. By car take the A4 towards Schaffhausen; there are car parks on both banks. Walking between the two sides via the railway bridge takes about 15–20 minutes.
Good to know
The north bank at Schlössli Wörth is free and open around the clock; Schloss Laufen and its platforms charge an entry fee during opening hours. Boats to the rock and across the basin run seasonally and depend on weather and water level. Drones follow federal rules, and flying over crowds and boats is restricted; your photographer checks the official federal drone map and local requirements before any aerial shots.
- Book an early session in summer to have the platforms and the basin before the coaches.
- Wear something that can get wet and shoes with grip: platforms and steps are slippery.
- Decide on the rock trip before the day; the boat timing shapes the rest of the session.
- Pick colours that contrast with white water and green banks; deep red, blue or mustard stand out.
- Combine the falls with Schaffhausen old town or Zurich for a longer session.

Find My PhotographerFrequently asked questions
How much does a photoshoot at the Rhine Falls cost?
Couple sessions start from CHF 390 and family sessions from CHF 450. The photographer’s travel from Zurich, entry to Schloss Laufen and any boat trip can add to that, and everything is set out in your proposal. See pricing for the options.
Which side of the Rhine Falls is better for photos?
Both, for different pictures. The north bank at Schlössli Wörth gives the classic full-width view with the castle, free of charge. The Schloss Laufen side puts you right in the spray on the platforms, for an entry fee of around 5 francs in 2026.
Can we take photos on the rock in the middle of the falls?
Yes, a boat from Schlössli Wörth runs to the rock in season, and you climb more than 100 steps to a small platform. Space is limited and the stay is about 20 minutes, so your photographer plans the shots in advance. It is not suitable for small children or people with limited mobility.
How do I get to the Rhine Falls from Zurich?
By train in about 50–60 minutes from Zurich HB, usually changing in Winterthur, to Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall or Neuhausen Rheinfall station. By car it is a straightforward drive on the A4 towards Schaffhausen. Check current connections in the SBB app.
Is the Rhine Falls a good place for a proposal?
It can be, if you choose the time well. Early morning on a lower platform or the Laufen terrace is quieter than midday at the basin, and the sound of the water keeps the moment private. See proposal photography in Switzerland for how photographers plan it.
Are the Rhine Falls worth visiting in winter?
Yes, with lower expectations of flow. The water volume is less than half of summer levels, but the banks are quiet and frost or snow can make strong pictures. Boats run on a reduced schedule or not at all, so check before planning a rock trip.
