Quick answers
- How much does it cost?
- Couple Photoshoot in Grindelwald starts from CHF 650. The final price depends on the place, duration, date, time of day, travel and any add-ons such as video, and is stated in your proposal before you book.
- How long does it take?
- A typical session lasts 1 hour and you receive around 40 edited photos.
- What is included?
- A short planning exchange to fix the route, the start time worked back from sunset, and how far up you want to go
- A walked route through two to four settings, from the village church to the terrace paths above it
- Relaxed direction: walking, talking and small prompts instead of stiff poses
- Professional editing of a curated selection of photographs
- Where does it take place?
- Popular places include Village church and Wetterhorn; Terrassenweg, lower meadows; Terrassenweg, upper viewpoint; Pfingstegg. Your photographer suggests the best spot for your date, the light and the crowds.
- When is the best time?
- Unlike most Alpine sessions on this site, morning is not the goal here: the Eiger north face is in shadow for most of the day and only lights up in the last hour or two before sunset, which is why the whole route works backwards from that moment rather than forwards from sunrise.
- How does booking work?
- Send a free request with your place, date and plans. Alpiora checks which photographers are available and replies with a proposal stating the photographer, the package and the exact price. Nothing is booked until you accept.
Grindelwald’s single defining backdrop, the Eiger north face, faces north-west across the village, which means it sits in shadow for most of the day and only catches direct light in the last hour or two before sunset. That single fact decides how a couple session here is built: rather than chasing sunrise like most Alpine sessions on this site, the route in Grindelwald climbs steadily through the afternoon towards the moment the wall lights up.
Most sessions start at the village church about two hours before sunset, when the meadows below the Wetterhorn are already warm, then move up onto the Terrassenweg paths above the village as the light lowers, finishing on a higher stretch of the path just as the Eiger catches the last colour of the day. It is a short, steady climb rather than a technical hike, and every stage works for outfits you would happily wear to dinner afterwards.
This page is about photographs of the two of you together, not a proposal. If a ring is involved, the planning and the timing are different: see proposal photography in Grindelwald. For every spot and season in the valley, our Grindelwald location guide goes further, and Lauterbrunnen on the other side of the pass makes a natural comparison for a morning-lit session.
Where the session happens
- 01
Village church and Wetterhorn
The Reformed church from 1793 stands above the main street with the Wetterhorn behind it, and the meadows around it catch warm, low light from mid-afternoon onward. It is the natural starting point: flat, a short walk from the station, and it needs no lift ticket while you are still deciding how far up the terrace paths to go afterwards.
Best time: Mid- to late afternoon, once the sun has moved round onto the Wetterhorn side.
- 02
Terrassenweg, lower meadows
A short, steady climb from the church, the lower stretch of the Terrassenweg runs through open farmland with the Schreckhorn and Wetterhorn already in view. It works as the middle of the route: enough elevation to change the backdrop from the village, without yet needing the full climb for the Eiger itself to be lit.
Best time: An hour or so before sunset, as the meadows turn gold.
- 03
Terrassenweg, upper viewpoint
Higher on the same path, the Eiger north face fills the view directly opposite, and this is the one point in the whole session built specifically around the wall finally catching light. Because the path runs along a quiet slope away from the village centre, you rarely share the view with anyone else even at the best hour.
Best time: The last 30–40 minutes before sunset, when the north face turns from grey to gold.
- 04
Pfingstegg
An optional extension for a longer booking: a small cable car from the eastern edge of the village reaches a meadow terrace with a wider panorama back over Grindelwald and up to the Eiger. It suits couples who want one more setting and are happy to add the cable car ride either side of the core route.
Best time: Late afternoon, checking the last cable car down before you book it into the route.
Typically included
- A short planning exchange to fix the route, the start time worked back from sunset, and how far up you want to go
- A walked route through two to four settings, from the village church to the terrace paths above it
- Relaxed direction: walking, talking and small prompts instead of stiff poses
- Professional editing of a curated selection of photographs
- A private online gallery with high-resolution downloads for personal use
- Optional extras quoted in the proposal: extra time, video, an extension to Pfingstegg
Preparation
- Bring a warm layer for the second half of the session; the temperature drops quickly once the sun leaves the meadows, even in midsummer.
- Choose mid-tones or warm colours that hold up against green meadows and the pale grey of the Eiger rock.
- Wear shoes comfortable enough for a steady uphill walk on farm tracks, with grip for the odd loose stone.
- Keep a jacket or wrap you like being photographed in for the last stretch, since the terrace path is more exposed to wind than the village.
- Plan dinner in the village for after the session rather than before, so you are not rushing the light at the end.
- Work backwards from sunset when agreeing the start time with your photographer, rather than picking a fixed hour in advance.
Time of day
Unlike most Alpine sessions on this site, morning is not the goal here: the Eiger north face is in shadow for most of the day and only lights up in the last hour or two before sunset, which is why the whole route works backwards from that moment rather than forwards from sunrise. Midday light is flat and best avoided for the terrace paths.
Weather
Because the Eiger north face only catches light for a short window before sunset, a clear afternoon matters more here than a clear morning. Clouds tend to build over the peaks through the day and often clear again towards evening, so a session that looked doubtful at midday can still work by the time you reach the upper viewpoint. If the wall stays covered, the village church and the lower meadows still give a complete session in soft light, without needing the Eiger visible at all.
Getting there
From Interlaken Ost, the Berner Oberland Bahn reaches Grindelwald in about 35 minutes; the train splits at Zweilütschinen, so check the carriage signs. The village church and the Terrassenweg paths are a short walk from the station, and the climb to the upper viewpoint adds 20–40 minutes on foot depending how far you go. The Pfingstegg cable car starts at the eastern edge of the village if you extend the route.

Find My PhotographerFrequently asked questions
What is the best route for a couple photoshoot in Grindelwald?
Most sessions start at the village church a couple of hours before sunset, climb the lower Terrassenweg meadows as the light lowers, and finish on a higher stretch of the same path just as the Eiger north face catches its last light. The route is timed backwards from sunset rather than forwards from a fixed start.
How much does a couple photoshoot in Grindelwald cost?
Couple sessions in Grindelwald start from CHF 650 for about 90 minutes, the Alpine starting price. Extra time, video, a weekend date and extending to Pfingstegg raise the total. Everything is listed in your proposal before you book.
Why does the session start in the afternoon instead of the morning?
The Eiger north face faces north-west over the village and stays in shadow for most of the day, only catching direct light in the hour or two before sunset. Building the route backwards from that window gives the strongest result, unlike most Alpine sessions elsewhere that favour sunrise.
What should we wear for a couple shoot in Grindelwald?
Mid-tones or warm colours that hold up against green meadows and pale rock, plus a layer you can add once the sun leaves the meadows and the temperature drops. Comfortable shoes matter more than formal ones on the climb up the Terrassenweg.
What happens if the Eiger is covered in cloud?
Cloud often clears from the peaks towards evening even after a grey afternoon, so your photographer will usually wait and see rather than cancel. If the wall stays hidden, the village church and the lower meadows still make a complete session in soft light without it.
Can we combine Grindelwald with Lauterbrunnen or Wengen?
Yes. Männlichen links Grindelwald and Wengen by gondola and cable car, and Lauterbrunnen, on the other branch of the same railway from Interlaken, suits a morning session before an evening one here. Combining places works best as a longer or multi-location session.
