Quick answers

How much does it cost?
Photoshoot in Grindelwald starts from CHF 650. The final price depends on the place, duration, date, time of day, travel and any add-ons such as video, and is stated in your proposal before you book.
When is the best time?
The Eiger north face faces north-west over the village, so it is in shadow for most of the day and only catches light in the late afternoon and evening, mainly in summer.
Getting there
From Interlaken Ost, the Berner Oberland Bahn reaches Grindelwald in about 35 minutes.
Where does it take place?
Popular places include Village church and Wetterhorn; Terrace paths above the village; First Cliff Walk; Bachalpsee. Your photographer suggests the best spot for your date, the light and the crowds.
How does booking work?
Send a free request with your place, date and plans. Alpiora checks which photographers are available and replies with a proposal stating the photographer, the package and the exact price. Nothing is booked until you accept.

Grindelwald lies at 1,034 metres in a wide, open valley ringed by the Bernese Alps, from the Wetterhorn to the Eiger. Unlike the narrow Lauterbrunnen valley, it is broad and green, with chalets scattered across sloping meadows and the Eiger’s north face rising straight above the village.

That gives you two kinds of session. Down in the village and on the terrace paths above it, you work with meadows, barns and the great walls of the Eiger and Wetterhorn. A gondola ride up, at First, you have the Cliff Walk hanging off the rock and the Bachalpsee lake reflecting the Schreckhorn and Finsteraarhorn — spectacular, but popular and dependent on lift times.

Grindelwald works for a proposal with a hidden photographer, a couple session and relaxed family photos, since much of it is reachable by train and gondola without hiking. It pairs well with a day on the Jungfraujoch.

  1. 01

    Village church and Wetterhorn

The Reformed church, built in 1793, stands above the main street with the Wetterhorn behind it. Around it, lanes and meadows lead gently uphill, so you can move from church to open field within a few minutes. It is an easy start that needs no lift ticket.

    Best time
Morning for the Wetterhorn side in light; late afternoon for warm light across the meadows.
    Access
About 10 minutes on foot from Grindelwald station along the main street.
  2. 02

    Terrace paths above the village

The Terrassenweg paths run along the northern slope above Grindelwald, through meadows and past farmhouses, with open views across to the Wetterhorn, the Schreckhorn and the Eiger north face. They are quieter than the village and give the classic “chalet, meadow, big mountain” picture.

    Best time
Late afternoon to sunset in summer, when evening light reaches the Eiger north face.
    Access
Uphill from the church on marked paths; allow 20–40 minutes to reach the open sections.
  3. 03

    First Cliff Walk

At First, at about 2,166 metres, a metal walkway is bolted to the cliff beside the top station, ending in a platform over the drop with the Eiger and Wetterhorn opposite. It is dramatic and very recognisable, but it is also busy in summer; the photographer will look for moments between groups rather than wait for an empty frame.

    Best time
The first gondolas of the morning, before the queues build; late afternoon on clear days.
    Access
First gondola from Grindelwald village, about 25 minutes via Bort and Schreckfeld. The walkway itself takes about 20 minutes.
  4. 04

    Bachalpsee

An alpine lake at about 2,265 metres with the Schreckhorn and Finsteraarhorn rising behind it. On a calm day the peaks reflect in the water — the image most people have in mind when they think of Grindelwald. The path is wide gravel, easy in trainers.

    Best time
Early morning or evening for calm water and fewer people. The gondola starts after sunrise in summer, so a true sunrise means staying overnight at First.
    Access
Under an hour on foot from First on a well-kept path; allow about two hours for the round trip plus shooting time.
  5. 05

    Pfingstegg

A small cable car climbs from the eastern edge of the village to Pfingstegg at about 1,390 metres, a meadow terrace with a view back over Grindelwald and up to the Eiger. It is less crowded than First, with a summer toboggan run and a restaurant, which makes it good for families.

    Best time
    Afternoon and early evening.
    Access
Pfingstegg cable car, summer only — in 2026 from 25 April to 25 October.
  6. 06

    Männlichen

The gondola from Grindelwald Terminal rises to Männlichen, a broad ridge with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau close by and the Lauterbrunnen valley on the far side. The open grass and big sky suit wide, simple compositions, and the Royal Walk leads to a viewpoint on the summit.

    Best time
Clear mornings, or late afternoon — watch the last gondola down.
    Access
Männlichen gondola from Grindelwald Terminal, about 19 minutes; runs in summer and in the ski season.
  7. 07

Eiger Express and the Eiger Trail

The Eiger Express tricable gondola runs from Grindelwald Terminal to Eigergletscher in about 15 minutes. From there the Eiger Trail descends under the north face towards Alpiglen — rugged, high-mountain scenery for adventurous couples who are comfortable on a real mountain path.

    Best time
Summer mornings; the trail is usually only open once the snow has cleared, so check its status.
    Access
Eiger Express from Grindelwald Terminal; the trail is a proper hike with steep, rocky sections.

Best time

Seasons

June and early July bring the greenest meadows, snow on the high peaks and flowers around First. July and August are warmest and busiest, with the longest lift hours. September and early October are clear and quieter, and the lifts still run until late October. Winter covers the valley in snow and turns First and Männlichen into ski areas; the village and church look their most classic, but Bachalpsee lies frozen under snow. In the shoulder seasons (November, and late April to May) some lifts close for maintenance.

Time of day

The Eiger north face faces north-west over the village, so it is in shadow for most of the day and only catches light in the late afternoon and evening, mainly in summer. That makes late afternoon to sunset the strongest time in and above the village. At First and Bachalpsee, early morning gives calm water and the fewest people; plan around the first and last gondola, which the photographer will check for your date.

Weather

Grindelwald is more open than Lauterbrunnen, so you often see weather coming over the peaks. Clouds tend to build on the Eiger and around First on summer afternoons, sometimes turning into thunderstorms; mornings are usually clearer. When the high peaks are hidden, the village, church and terrace paths still work well in soft light, while Bachalpsee without its mountains is much less striking. Your photographer will check webcams at First and Männlichen on the day and move the session up or down the mountain as needed.

Getting there

From Interlaken Ost, the Berner Oberland Bahn reaches Grindelwald in about 35 minutes. The train splits at Zweilütschinen, so check the carriage signs for Grindelwald. It stops first at Grindelwald Terminal, the base for the Eiger Express and the Männlichen gondola, then continues to the village station, where the Wengernalp Railway leaves for Kleine Scheidegg. The First gondola and the Pfingstegg cable car start from the village, within walking distance or a short bus ride. Grindelwald is reachable by car, with paid parking including a car park at Grindelwald Terminal. Lifts have maintenance breaks in spring and late autumn; your photographer confirms the day’s operation.

Good to know

Lift tickets are paid separately from the shoot, and regional passes cover many of them; First is the most expensive in time and money on a busy day. Crowds: Jungfrau Region Tourism advises arriving at First as early as possible in summer and visiting Bachalpsee early or in the evening. Drones: rules vary by site — the Jungfraujoch is a no-drone zone and parts of the region are protected areas — so check the federal drone map for your exact spot before planning aerial shots. Meadows are private pasture and hay fields: stay on paths and close gates. The Grindelwald photo guide covers these spots in more detail; for your date, request availability.

  • For First and Bachalpsee, take one of the first gondolas of the day; queues build fast in summer.
  • Keep the evening for the village and terrace paths, when light finally reaches the Eiger north face.
  • Pack a warm layer for First and Männlichen — it is often 5–8 °C colder than in the village.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and carry any change of outfit in a small backpack for the Bachalpsee walk.
  • Check lift maintenance dates if you travel in May, early June or November.
  • On cloudy days, stay low: the church and meadows photograph well in soft light, the lake does not.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time of day for a photoshoot in Grindelwald?

Late afternoon to sunset in the village, when light reaches the Eiger north face, and early morning at First and Bachalpsee, when the water is calm and the crowds are small. Your photographer will plan around the gondola times for your date.

Can we do a sunrise shoot at Bachalpsee?

Only with an overnight stay or an early hike. In summer the First gondola starts after sunrise, so a true sunrise at the lake means sleeping at the mountain inn at First or walking up in the dark. An early-morning session with the first gondola is the practical alternative.

Is the First Cliff Walk good for a proposal?

It is spectacular but busy, so it suits couples who do not mind an audience. For more privacy, a quiet corner of the terrace paths above the village or the path to Bachalpsee early in the morning often works better. Our Grindelwald proposal page covers the options.

Do we need lift tickets for a photoshoot in Grindelwald?

Only for the mountain spots. The village, church and terrace paths need no ticket; First, Pfingstegg, Männlichen and the Eiger Express are paid separately, and regional passes cover many of them. The photographer’s own travel costs are included in your proposal.

How much does a photoshoot in Grindelwald cost?

Sessions in Grindelwald start from CHF 650, the Alpine starting price, for about 90 minutes. Mountain transport, time of day and extras such as video or a second location affect the final figure; see pricing.

Can we combine Grindelwald with Lauterbrunnen or Wengen?

Yes. Männlichen links Grindelwald and Wengen by gondola and cable car, and Lauterbrunnen is on the other branch of the same railway from Interlaken. Combining places works best as a longer or multi-location session.
