Wengen sits at about 1,274 metres on a terrace on the eastern side of the Lauterbrunnen valley, some 500 metres above the valley floor. No road leads up: the only way in is the Wengernalp Railway, which is why the lanes are quiet, the chalets face the view, and a session here feels calmer than almost anywhere else in the Jungfrau region.
The terrace looks west across the valley to the cliffs below Mürren and south towards the Jungfrau. That orientation is what makes Wengen special for photographers: while the valley floor in Lauterbrunnen is already in shade, Wengen still has warm afternoon and evening light.
It suits couple sessions, honeymoons and quiet proposals — the viewpoints are a short walk from the station and rarely crowded. Families like it too: no traffic, and paths that are easy with children.
Photo spots — Wengen
- 01
Church viewpoint
Just below the centre, the small Reformed church stands on the edge of the terrace with benches and steps looking straight down into the Lauterbrunnen valley. On a clear day you see Staubbach Falls on the far wall. It is the easiest strong frame in Wengen, a few minutes from the station.
- Best time
- Late afternoon to sunset, when the terrace is still in sun and the valley below falls into shadow.
- Access
- About five minutes on foot from Wengen station, downhill on village lanes.
- 02
Hunnenfluh
A rocky outcrop at 1,363 metres that Wengen Tourism describes as the best view over the Lauterbrunnen valley with the Jungfrau. You also see down the valley towards Interlaken. The path is flat and easy, so it works in dresses and good town shoes.
- Best time
- Evening light in summer and early autumn; clear mornings for the Jungfrau.
- Access
- About 35 minutes on foot from the village on an easy trail.
- 03
Leiterhorn
Higher and wilder than the Hunnenfluh, at 1,526 metres, with the whole Lauterbrunnen valley, the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau and the Lütschine valley towards Interlaken. There are simple barbecue spots, which makes it a good place for a relaxed elopement picnic after the formal photos.
- Best time
- Sunset; bring headlamps for the walk back.
- Access
- About 60 minutes on foot from the village; it combines well with the Hunnenfluh.
- 04
Staubbach bench
A group of benches at about 1,268 metres facing Staubbach Falls across the valley, near the finish area of the Lauberhorn ski race. It gives the famous waterfall from an unusual angle — level with the top of the fall rather than looking up at it.
- Best time
- Late morning to early afternoon, when the fall and cliff are lit.
- Access
- About 30 minutes on foot from the village.
- 05
Path down to Lauterbrunnen
Halfway down the footpath to Lauterbrunnen you look over the village, the railway and Staubbach Falls in one frame, with the path itself leading into the picture. It is one of the most complete views of the valley and a natural way to link two locations in one session.
- Best time
- Morning, when Staubbach is in light.
- Access
- About 50 minutes downhill to Lauterbrunnen, losing nearly 500 metres; steep in places.
- 06
Männlichen and the Royal Walk
The cable car from Wengen climbs to Männlichen at over 2,200 metres, a broad ridge with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau across the valley and Grindelwald on the other side. The Royal Walk leads up from the top station to a viewing platform on the summit. Open, grassy and very wide — it takes large, simple compositions.
- Best time
- Clear mornings or late afternoon; check the last cable car down.
- Access
- Wengen–Männlichen cable car, summer season only (in 2026 from 23 May to 25 October) and in the ski season; closed between seasons.
Best time
Seasons
June to early July brings flower meadows and snow still on the peaks. July and August are warm and the best time for evening sessions with long light. September and October are quieter, with clearer air and golden larches; the Männlichen cable car runs until late October. Winter turns Wengen into a ski village with snow on the chalet roofs; the Lauberhorn World Cup races in January fill the village, so avoid that week unless the race is part of your story. In the shoulder seasons (late April–May, November) many hotels and lifts close.
Time of day
Wengen faces west, so it keeps the sun much longer than the valley floor. Late afternoon to sunset is the strongest window for almost every spot, with warm side light on the meadows and the valley below in shade. Mornings suit the Jungfrau views and the path down to Lauterbrunnen, when Staubbach is lit.
Weather
At 1,274 metres Wengen is often above the autumn valley fog that fills Lauterbrunnen in the morning — or inside a cloud when the valley is clear. Conditions change within minutes, so photographers watch webcams on the day rather than the regional forecast. Summer afternoons can bring short thunderstorms; the church and village lanes make a sheltered fallback. In winter, expect snow from December and cold evenings — bring warm layers and a coat you are happy to be photographed in.
Getting there
Wengen is car-free and has no road access. From Interlaken Ost, take the Berner Oberland Bahn to Lauterbrunnen (about 24 minutes), then the Wengernalp Railway up to Wengen (about 12 minutes); allow roughly 40 minutes in total with the change. The same line continues to Kleine Scheidegg, where you can change for the Jungfraujoch. If you drive, leave the car in the multi-storey car park at Lauterbrunnen station, which fills on busy days. The train runs all year; the Männlichen cable car runs only in summer and in the ski season.
Good to know
No cars means hotel luggage often travels by small electric vehicles or on the train; plan outfit changes around your hotel. Drones: Wengen belongs to the municipality of Lauterbrunnen, where Jungfrau Region Tourism states that drones are prohibited; check the federal drone map and ask before planning any drone shot. Fees: there is no charge to walk to the viewpoints; the train and the Männlichen cable car are paid (several regional passes cover them). Meadows are private hay fields: stay on paths, especially before mowing. The Lauterbrunnen valley guide compares Wengen with the valley floor and Mürren.
- Book the session for the last two hours before sunset; Wengen keeps its light much longer than the valley.
- Avoid Lauberhorn race week in January unless the race is part of the plan.
- Check the Männlichen cable car schedule before your date — it closes between seasons.
- Stay overnight in Wengen if you can: an evening session without a last train to catch is much calmer.
- Wear shoes that handle gravel paths; Hunnenfluh and Leiterhorn are easy but not paved.
- For two looks in one session, start at the church viewpoint and walk towards Hunnenfluh.

Find a Photographer in WengenFrequently asked questions
Can you drive to Wengen?
No. Wengen is car-free and has no public road; you reach it by the Wengernalp Railway from Lauterbrunnen in about 12 minutes. Drivers park in Lauterbrunnen, where the multi-storey car park at the station fills on busy days.
What is the best time of day for a photoshoot in Wengen?
Late afternoon to sunset. Wengen faces west across the Lauterbrunnen valley and keeps warm light long after the valley floor is in shade. Mornings are better for the path down to Lauterbrunnen and for Staubbach Falls.
Which viewpoints in Wengen are good for a proposal?
The church viewpoint is quick and simple; Hunnenfluh, about 35 minutes away on an easy path, is quieter and has the Jungfrau in view. Your photographer can walk ahead and wait out of sight. When you request availability, tell us how private it should feel.
Is Wengen good for a winter photoshoot?
Yes. The village is snowy from about December, the train runs all year, and the church viewpoint and village lanes work well in snow. Avoid the week of the Lauberhorn races in January, when the village is full.
How much does a photoshoot in Wengen cost?
Sessions in Wengen start from CHF 650, the Alpine starting price, for about 90 minutes. The final price depends on the photographer, date, time of day and extras such as a second location or video; see pricing.
Can we combine Wengen with Lauterbrunnen or Mürren?
Yes. A classic plan is Lauterbrunnen in the morning and Wengen for the evening light, linked by a 12-minute train or the footpath. Mürren sits across the valley and needs a longer transfer, so it suits a longer session.
