Brienz lines the eastern shore of Lake Brienz, a long village of dark wooden houses between the water and the mountain. It is home to the Swiss woodcarving tradition, and it feels calmer than Interlaken at the other end of the lake, even in summer.
For photographs, Brienz gives you more range than its size suggests: a lakefront with steamers and turquoise water, the flower-hung Brunngasse, the Giessbach Falls across the lake with their historic funicular, and the Brienz Rothorn, where a steam cog railway climbs to 2,350 m above the lake. The Iseltwald pier is one boat stop away.
Brienz is priced as an Alpine location, from CHF 650 for 90 minutes. It suits couple photoshoots, relaxed family sessions and honeymoon photos, and it is an easy second stop on a day that starts in Interlaken or Iseltwald.
Photo spots — Brienz
- 01
Lakefront and boat landing
The quay by the boat landing looks west-southwest down the length of Lake Brienz, with wooded slopes dropping straight into the water on both sides. Boats come and go through the day, and the lakeside path continues past old wooden houses in both directions.
- Best time
- Morning for calm water; late afternoon and evening for warm, low light down the lake.
- Access
- Directly beside Brienz railway station; flat.
- 02
Brunngasse
A narrow cobbled lane of old wooden houses with window boxes that overflow with flowers in summer, often called one of the most beautiful streets in Europe. People live here: keep voices low, leave doorways and steps free, and keep the session short.
- Best time
- Early morning in summer, when the flowers are full and the lane is quiet.
- Access
- A few minutes on foot from the station, uphill from the main street.
- 03
Giessbach Falls and Grandhotel Giessbach
Across the lake, the Giessbach falls down the forested slope in a series of cascades beside a grand 19th-century hotel. Footpaths and bridges cross the falls, and the lower terrace looks out over the lake. The funicular from the lake, opened in 1879, is part of the story.
- Best time
- Mid-morning to afternoon, when light reaches into the gorge; spray is strongest after rain and in early summer.
- Access
- Boat from Brienz to Giessbach See (about 10 minutes), then the Giessbach funicular, which runs in the summer season from April to October; or about one hour on foot along the south shore.
- 04
Brienz Rothorn
A steam cog railway climbs from the lakefront to the summit at 2,350 m, where you look straight down onto Lake Brienz and south across the Bernese Alps. It is a big, open, high-altitude backdrop, and the train itself makes strong photographs.
- Best time
- Clear mornings; clouds often build on summer afternoons. In 2026 trains reach the summit from 6 June to 25 October.
- Access
- Brienz Rothorn Bahn from the station opposite Brienz railway station, about an hour each way. Before 6 June 2026 trains run only to Planalp, from 9 May.
- 05
Ballenberg open-air museum
Around a hundred historic buildings from all over Switzerland, moved and rebuilt in meadows and woods just east of Brienz: farmhouses, gardens and old craft workshops. It works well for families and for timeless, rural frames.
- Best time
- Late spring to early autumn, during museum opening hours.
- Access
- Bus from Brienz station to the museum entrances; paid entry. Ask the museum beforehand about photo sessions.

Seasons
June to September is the full season: flowers on the Brunngasse, the Rothorn open to the summit, boats and the Giessbach funicular running, and the lake at its most turquoise from glacial meltwater. September and October are quieter and often clearer. From early December to early April the Lake Brienz boats do not run, the Rothorn railway is closed and Ballenberg closes for winter, so a winter shoot stays in the village and on the lakefront.
Time of day
The lake stretches away to the west-southwest, so late-afternoon and evening light falls down the lake towards the village. Mornings are the calmest for reflections and the emptiest on the Brunngasse. The Rothorn has no sunrise train; plan it for a clear morning, before summer clouds build.
Weather
Brienz sits at the foot of the Rothorn chain, and on summer afternoons clouds and showers often gather over the mountains while the lake stays bright. Check the Rothorn webcam before you commit to the summit; if it is in cloud, stay by the lake and at the Giessbach Falls, where overcast light is even flattering. Wind is often lighter in the morning.
Getting there
Brienz railway station is on the Luzern–Interlaken Express line, about 20 minutes from Interlaken Ost and just under two hours from Lucerne over the Brünig Pass. BLS boats connect Brienz with Giessbach, Iseltwald and Interlaken Ost from 3 April to 6 December 2026; the full crossing to Interlaken takes a little over an hour, and on many summer days the paddle steamer Lötschberg sails. The Rothorn railway starts across the road from the station, and buses run to Ballenberg. Continue to Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald via Interlaken Ost.
Good to know
The Brunngasse is a residential lane, so treat it like someone’s front garden. Ballenberg charges entry and may have rules for professional photography; ask before you go. The Rothorn railway, boats and the Giessbach funicular charge normal fares for you and your photographer. For drones, the Jungfrau region asks pilots to use only permitted open areas and stay away from people, lifts and busy trails; check the federal drone map at map.geo.admin.ch and discuss any aerial shot with your photographer first.
- Combine Brienz with Iseltwald by boat: the pier early, then Giessbach and the Brienz lakefront.
- Bring a warm layer for the Rothorn summit even in midsummer; it is almost 1,800 m above the lake.
- Muted greens, cream and soft blues sit well with dark wooden chalets and turquoise water.
- Wear shoes with grip for the Giessbach paths; they are often wet from spray.
- If the forecast is changeable, book the lakefront first and keep the Rothorn flexible.

Find a Photographer in BrienzFrequently asked questions
How much does a photoshoot in Brienz cost?
A photoshoot in Brienz starts at CHF 650 for 90 minutes, the Alpine floor for the Bernese Oberland. The price depends on the photographer, the date, the time of day and whether you add the Rothorn, Giessbach or another location. Your proposal lists the full price before you confirm.
How do I get to the Giessbach Falls from Brienz?
Take the boat from Brienz to Giessbach See, about 10 minutes, then the historic funicular up to the Grandhotel and the falls. The funicular runs in the summer season, from April to October. You can also walk from Brienz along the south shore in about an hour.
When does the Brienz Rothorn railway run in 2026?
In 2026 the Brienz Rothorn railway runs to the summit daily from 6 June to 25 October, with trains to the Planalp mid-station from 9 May. The ride takes about an hour each way. Check the timetable, because the first trains leave later on weekdays than at weekends.
Is Brienz a good alternative to the Iseltwald pier?
Yes, if you want lake and mountains without the pier queue. Brienz has the same turquoise water along its lakefront, plus the Brunngasse and Giessbach nearby. Many couples do both: a few minutes on the pier in Iseltwald, then the main session in Brienz.
Can we do a family photoshoot in Brienz?
Brienz works well for families: the lakefront is flat and short, the steam train is a highlight for children, and Ballenberg offers space to move around. Plan the session around naps and meals rather than the perfect light. Our page on family photos in Interlaken covers the wider region.
Is Brienz busy in summer?
Brienz is busy around the station, the boat landing and the Rothorn railway in summer, but far calmer than Iseltwald or Interlaken. The Brunngasse is quietest early in the morning. For the most relaxed session, start before 10.00 or after 17.00.
