Engelberg sits at the end of a high valley at about 1,000 metres, walled in by Titlis on one side and the Brunni slopes on the other. The Benedictine abbey, founded in 1120, still dominates the village. From Lucerne the train takes 43 minutes – close enough for a glacier and a lake before lunch.

For a shoot, Engelberg gives you three levels in one morning: the village and the abbey, the Trübsee lake at 1,764 metres, and the snow of Titlis above 3,000 metres. It suits couple photoshoots, proposals, family sessions and solo travellers who want mountains without a long transfer from Lucerne.

Engelberg is an Alpine location: sessions start at CHF 650 for 90 minutes, which allows for lift rides and walking between spots. Lift tickets are paid separately by you and your photographer; see pricing.

Photo spots — Engelberg

  1. 01

    Trübsee

A mountain lake at 1,764 metres, directly below the north face of Titlis. A flat path runs all the way round, even suitable for a pram, and on calm days the water gives a clean reflection of the mountain. In winter the lake freezes and disappears under snow.

    Best time
Calm early mornings for reflections; June to October for green meadows, December to March for snow.
    Access
Titlis Xpress gondola from the Engelberg valley station to the Trübsee mid-station, then a few minutes on foot.
  2. 02

    Titlis summit and Cliff Walk

Snow all year round and views across the Alps. The Cliff Walk, a suspension bridge about 100 metres long at 3,041 metres, is the famous frame. The summit is being rebuilt until 2029, so expect construction around the old station; the Cliff Walk stays open and the new Titlis Tower opened in 2026.

    Best time
The first cable cars of the day, before cloud builds up and tour groups arrive.
    Access
Titlis Xpress to Stand, then the Rotair or, while it is closed, the new Titlis Connect cable car to the top.
  3. 03

    Engelberg Abbey

The white Baroque church and monastery buildings give a calm, architectural background in the heart of the village. The church holds the largest organ in Switzerland, and a show cheese dairy sits in the monastery courtyard. Be discreet: about thirty monks still live and work here.

    Best time
Morning or late afternoon; any season.
    Access
Ten minutes on foot from Engelberg station.
  4. 04

    Brunni and Härzlisee

The sunny side of the valley. From the small Härzlisee lake at the Brunnihütte you look straight across at Titlis, and the slopes are gentler and quieter than on the Trübsee side. It is a good choice for families, with a barefoot trail by the water.

    Best time
Afternoon, when the sun is on the slope; summer season roughly June to October.
    Access
Brunnibahn cable car to Ristis in about three minutes, then the chairlift to the Brunnihütte.
  5. 05

    Gerschnialp

Open alpine meadows with farmhouses and forest edges above the village, often forgotten by visitors going straight to Titlis. Wide space, few people and a view down the valley.

    Best time
Evening light in summer and autumn.
    Access
Funicular from Engelberg in about four minutes.
  6. 06

    Village and riverside

Chalets, the Engelberger Aa and flower meadows at the edge of the village make relaxed pictures without any lift ticket, useful when clouds cover the peaks.

    Best time
Any time of day; the valley floor loses the sun early in winter.
    Access
    On foot from the station.

Seasons

June to early October brings green meadows, flowers around Trübsee and the widest choice of lifts. December to March is the snow season, with Titlis and Trübsee white and the village busy with skiers. May and November are in-between months: snow melting or not yet settled, and some lifts pause for maintenance.

Time of day

Go up early. Clouds often build on Titlis around midday, and the summit is busiest from late morning. Trübsee reflections need calm air, which is most likely in the first hours. The village and Brunni are better later in the day, when the valley is in warm light.

Weather

Engelberg is on the north side of the Alps and gets more rain than Valais or Ticino. The summit can be in cloud while the valley is clear, and the other way round, so check the Titlis webcams before paying for the ride. At 3,000 metres it is cold even in July: bring a warm layer and sunglasses for the glare off the snow.

Getting there

The Luzern–Engelberg Express runs every hour and takes 43 minutes from Lucerne. From Zurich, change in Lucerne. The Titlis valley station is within walking distance of Engelberg station. Driving is possible but not needed.

Good to know

Titlis tickets are expensive compared with a city session, so budget for your photographer’s ticket too; prices vary by season. In 2026 the Titlis Rotair is closed from 17 August to 11 December for construction work, and the new Titlis Connect cable car carries visitors to the summit meanwhile. Check titlis.ch for the current timetable before you book. For drones, check the FOCA drone map and ask the lift operator before flying on their ground; crowds at the summit rule it out anyway.

  • Book the earliest possible start and plan the summit first, then Trübsee and the village on the way down.
  • Bring a warm jacket and proper shoes for the summit even in midsummer; you can leave it in a bag for the pictures.
  • Light, plain colours stand out against the snow; dark colours work well on the green slopes of Trübsee.
  • If the summit is in cloud, Trübsee, Brunni and the village often still work.
  • Families with small children may prefer Brunni: shorter lifts and more space to play.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a photoshoot in Engelberg cost?

Sessions in Engelberg start at CHF 650, the Alpine floor, for about 90 minutes. Lift tickets for you and your photographer come on top. The final price depends on photographer, date and duration and is stated in your proposal.

Is Titlis open for photoshoots in 2026?

Yes, but the summit is a construction site until 2029. The Cliff Walk stays open and the Titlis Tower opened in 2026; from 17 August to 11 December 2026 the Rotair is closed and the Titlis Connect cable car runs instead. Check titlis.ch shortly before your date.

Where can I propose in Engelberg?

The Trübsee shore is the usual choice: quieter than the summit, with Titlis in the frame. The Cliff Walk is dramatic but busy. Read how proposal photography works and see our proposal guide for Switzerland.

Can I do Engelberg as a day trip from Lucerne?

Yes. With a train every hour taking 43 minutes, a morning session with Titlis and Trübsee fits easily into a day from Lucerne. Start early to beat the clouds and the crowds.

Is Engelberg good for a family photoshoot?

Yes. Trübsee has a flat lakeside path, and Brunni has a small lake with a barefoot trail and gentler slopes. Children under six often find the summit cold and crowded, so keep it short or skip it. See our family photos in Switzerland.

What should I wear on Titlis?

Warm layers, closed shoes with grip and sunglasses, even in summer. The terrace and Cliff Walk can be icy. Plain, light colours read well against the snow.
