- Photoshoot in Lake Lucerne starts from CHF 390. The final price depends on the place, duration, date, time of day, travel and any add-ons such as video, and is stated in your proposal before you book.
- When is the best time?
- The northern shore faces south and southwest, so late afternoon and sunset are the strongest hours at Weggis, Vitznau and Meggenhorn.
- Which experiences are available here?
- Couple Photoshoot, Proposal Photography, Honeymoon Photography, Family Photoshoot, Engagement Photography, and Luxury Vacation Photography
- Getting there
- Boats of the lake navigation company leave from the piers opposite Lucerne station and call at Weggis (under 45 minutes) and Vitznau (about an hour), with fewer departures in winter.
- Where does it take place?
- Popular places include Weggis lakeside promenade; Vitznau lakefront and pier; On board a paddle steamer; Bürgenstock rock path and Hammetschwand. Your photographer suggests the best spot for your date, the light and the crowds.
- How does booking work?

Lake Lucerne is not one backdrop but a string of them. The lake winds between steep mountains for almost 40 kilometres, and each arm has a different character: the open basin in front of Lucerne, the sunny shore of Weggis and Vitznau below Rigi, the cliffs of Bürgenstock, and the narrow, fjord-like Urnersee beyond Brunnen.
For a photoshoot the lake has two practical advantages. The boats are part of the experience rather than just transport, so the journey itself becomes a set; and the villages on the northern shore face south, which means sun on your faces for most of the day and the lake and Pilatus in the background.
Couples come here for a proposal near Lucerne at a quiet pier, a honeymoon session on a steamer, or a relaxed couple shoot that ends with dinner by the water. Families like the short walks and the boat rides between spots.

Weggis lakeside promenade
Weggis sits on the sheltered northern shore at the foot of Rigi, in the mild stretch the region calls the Lucerne Riviera. The promenade runs past the boat pier, gardens and hotel terraces with open views south across the lake to Bürgenstock and Pilatus. Low walls and small jetties give natural places to sit.
- Best time
- Late afternoon to sunset, when the light turns warm and the sun drops towards the Pilatus side.
- Access
- Under 45 minutes by boat from Lucerne, or by bus via Küssnacht. The Rigi Kaltbad cable car station is about a 15-minute walk uphill.
- 02
Vitznau lakefront and pier
Vitznau is where Europe’s first mountain railway, opened in 1871, starts: the red cogwheel trains wait a few steps from the boat pier. That meeting of lake, steamer and railway makes a strong story sequence, and the quieter shore paths either side of the village give you water and mountain without the pier traffic.
- Best time
- Morning for soft light on the shore; late afternoon for warm light and the evening boats.
- Access
- About an hour by boat from Lucerne, or by bus from Küssnacht or Brunnen. Level paths around the village.
- 03
On board a paddle steamer
The lake company runs five historic paddle steamers, built between 1901 and 1928, alongside its motor ships. The open upper deck, the polished wood and brass, and the lake sliding past make a session that moves on its own. A photographer can work the whole crossing between Lucerne and Weggis or Vitznau.
- Best time
- Afternoon crossings in summer; check which departures are planned as steamers, as they are published in advance.
- Access
- Board at the piers opposite Lucerne station. A regular boat ticket applies; first-class decks are quieter.
- 04
Bürgenstock rock path and Hammetschwand
Above the lake’s southern shore, the Felsenweg is a roughly 2.2-kilometre path cut into the cliff, with sheer drops to the water and views north over the lake towards Lucerne. At its end the Hammetschwand lift, Europe’s highest outdoor lift, climbs 152.8 metres to the summit viewpoint.
- Best time
- Morning to early afternoon, before the cliff face falls into shade. The path is closed in winter.
- Access
- Boat to Kehrsiten-Bürgenstock, then the funicular up to the resort, then about an hour on the path. Easy gradient; the lift closes in bad weather.
- 05
Meggenhorn Castle park
A 19th-century neo-Gothic castle on a small peninsula east of Lucerne, surrounded by a park, a vineyard and a lakeshore meadow. The grounds have been open to the public since 1974 and the castle is also used for weddings, so the park feels like a garden rather than a sight.
- Best time
- Late afternoon and golden hour, with the sun low over the lake and Pilatus in the distance.
- Access
- About 15 minutes by train or bus from Lucerne to Meggen, then a short walk through the village.
- 06
Brunnen waterfront and the Urnersee
At Brunnen the lake bends south into the Urnersee, a narrow arm between steep rock walls that looks more like a Norwegian fjord than a Swiss lake. The waterfront promenade faces straight down it, which makes simple portraits with a dramatic depth behind you.
- Best time
- Morning and midday, when light reaches down into the arm; föhn days give very clear air.
- Access
- Around two hours by boat from Lucerne, or under an hour by train.

Seasons
May to early October is the main season: frequent boats, steamers on many routes, gardens in flower and warm evenings on the promenades. June has the longest evenings. Autumn brings coloured forests on the slopes above Weggis and calm water on fine days. In winter boats run on a reduced timetable, the Bürgenstock path is closed, and the lake is often under fog, although Weggis and Vitznau are among the sunnier spots when the fog lifts. Our guide to lake locations in Switzerland compares the lakes.
Time of day
The northern shore faces south and southwest, so late afternoon and sunset are the strongest hours at Weggis, Vitznau and Meggenhorn. Early morning often brings flat, mirror-like water before the wind picks up. At midday, a steamer deck with an awning or the shade of lakefront trees is easier on faces than the open promenade.
Weather
The lake is sheltered, and the Weggis and Vitznau shore has a notably mild microclimate, which is why it is called the Lucerne Riviera. Summer afternoons can bring thunderstorms that build over the mountains quickly; your photographer will watch the radar and move the session earlier or later. From October to February, low fog (Hochnebel) often covers the lake on calm high-pressure days while the summits of Rigi and Pilatus stay in sunshine; the fog top often sits somewhere around 800 to 1,500 metres. On föhn days a warm south wind clears the air and can make the Urnersee choppy.
Getting there
Boats of the lake navigation company leave from the piers opposite Lucerne station and call at Weggis (under 45 minutes) and Vitznau (about an hour), with fewer departures in winter. A bus along the northern shore links Küssnacht, Weggis, Vitznau and Brunnen. From Weggis a cable car climbs to Rigi Kaltbad, and from Vitznau the cogwheel railway runs to Rigi Kulm, so a lake session combines easily with a mountain one as a multi-location photo tour.
Good to know
No permit is needed for a private photoshoot on public promenades and piers or on board a public boat, but be considerate of other passengers and do not block gangways. Hotel terraces and private gardens along the shore need the owner’s permission. Drone flights over the lake are restricted: in the canton of Lucerne, flying over the water has been prohibited except with a permit, and the neighbouring cantons have their own rules, so check the FOCA drone map before planning aerial shots. Sessions start from CHF 390; honeymoon sessions start from CHF 650. Boat and railway tickets are paid separately.
- Ask which departures are paddle steamers before you fix the time; the timetable marks them.
- Bring a light layer even in summer: on deck the wind is noticeably cooler.
- For a proposal, a side pier at Weggis at golden hour is far quieter than the Lucerne lakefront.
- Flowing fabrics look good in the lake breeze; very loose hair may not.
- Plan the last boat back before you plan the sunset.

Find My PhotographerFrequently asked questions
Where are the best photo spots on Lake Lucerne?
The promenades of Weggis and Vitznau, the deck of a paddle steamer, the Bürgenstock rock path, the park of Meggenhorn Castle and the Brunnen waterfront facing the Urnersee. The lakefront in Lucerne itself is another option for a short session.
Can we have a photoshoot on a boat on Lake Lucerne?
Yes. A photographer can travel with you on a scheduled boat between Lucerne and Weggis or Vitznau and work on deck during the crossing. You buy normal tickets; a private charter is also possible but is arranged and paid separately.
How do we get from Lucerne to Weggis and Vitznau?
By boat from the piers opposite Lucerne station: under 45 minutes to Weggis and about an hour to Vitznau. There is also a bus along the shore via Küssnacht, with fewer boats in winter.
What does a photoshoot on Lake Lucerne cost?
Couple sessions start from CHF 390, proposals from CHF 650 and honeymoon sessions from CHF 650. Combining the lake with Lucerne or Rigi is priced as a multi-location session from CHF 850; boat tickets are extra.
Can I fly a drone over Lake Lucerne?
Only in limited cases. Flying over the water in the canton of Lucerne has been prohibited except with a permit, the other lakeside cantons have their own rules, and there are airfields nearby. Check the FOCA drone map and ask the relevant canton before you plan it.
What is the best month for a Lake Lucerne photoshoot?
May to early October, when boats and steamers run most often and evenings are long. June gives the latest sunsets, and September usually combines warm light with fewer visitors than July and August.
