Quick answers

How much does it cost?
Photoshoot in Pilatus starts from CHF 650. The final price depends on the place, duration, date, time of day, travel and any add-ons such as video, and is stated in your proposal before you book.
When is the best time?
Day visitors come up from about 9:00 and the terraces are busiest from late morning to mid-afternoon.
Getting there
There are two ways up. From Kriens, a bus from Lucerne station takes about 15 minutes, then a short walk leads to the panorama gondola to Fräkmüntegg and the aerial cableway to Pilatus Kulm, about 40 minutes in total.
Where does it take place?
Popular places include Esel summit; Tomlishorn ridge and flower trail; Pilatus Kulm terrace and hotels; Dragon Path (Drachenweg). Your photographer suggests the best spot for your date, the light and the crowds.
How does booking work?
Send a free request with your place, date and plans. Alpiora checks which photographers are available and replies with a proposal stating the photographer, the package and the exact price. Nothing is booked until you accept.

Pilatus is the jagged mountain on Lucerne’s skyline, and where Rigi is soft and green, Pilatus is rock. Its highest point, the Tomlishorn, reaches 2,128 metres, and the summit area around Pilatus Kulm is a cluster of ridges, stairs and galleries hanging over sheer drops, with Lake Lucerne and the city far below on one side and the Alps on the other.

That drama is the reason to shoot here. A short walk from the station takes you to viewpoints that feel far more remote than they are: the Esel in ten minutes, the Tomlishorn in about half an hour. The paths are secure, with railings, but they involve steps and exposure, so the mountain suits couples who like a bit of height.

Pilatus is popular for a proposal near Lucerne, for honeymoon sessions and for elopement photography, usually combined with a morning or evening in Lucerne itself.

Photo spots — Pilatus

  1. 01

    Esel summit

The rocky top directly above Pilatus Kulm, reached by a stepped path with railings. From the small platform you look east and north over Lake Lucerne, Lake Alpnach, Bürgenstock and Rigi. It is the most compact dramatic view on the mountain and the natural place for a proposal.

    Best time
Sunrise, with the light coming over the lake and Rigi; late afternoon for warm side light.
    Access
About 10 minutes and 50 metres of ascent on steps from the summit stations. Sturdy shoes; can be closed in snow and ice.
  2. 02

    Tomlishorn ridge and flower trail

The highest point of the massif, reached along a ridge path partly cut into the rock, with railings and long views south to the Alps and north over the Plateau. In early summer the trail is known for its alpine flowers. It gives open, airy portraits with nothing behind you but sky and peaks.

    Best time
Morning, before cloud builds on summer afternoons; June and July for flowers.
    Access
About 35 minutes each way from Pilatus Kulm, 60 metres of ascent. Summer only in practice; not for anyone uneasy with drops.
  3. 03

    Pilatus Kulm terrace and hotels

The summit plateau links the historic Hotel Pilatus-Kulm, with its stone façade and arched windows, and the round Hotel Bellevue, both on terraces above the drop. It is the easiest spot on the mountain: flat, safe and with the lake below.

    Best time
Blue hour and sunset if you stay overnight; otherwise late afternoon.
    Access
Directly at the top stations of the cogwheel railway and the aerial cableway.
  4. 04

    Dragon Path (Drachenweg)

A path tunnelled through the rock below the summit, with windows cut through the cliff that frame the view. It connects to the Panorama gallery and gives a shaded, sculptural setting with natural frames, useful on bright days or when the wind is strong outside.

    Best time
Any time; the rock windows catch the best light in the afternoon.
    Access
Entrance at the end of the Panorama gallery at Pilatus Kulm. Only open on some days in winter.
  5. 05

    Cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad

Opened in 1889, the Pilatus railway is the steepest cogwheel railway in the world, with gradients of up to 48 percent. The small red cars tilted on the rock face make a strong travel image, and the ride up from the lakeshore at Alpnachstad is part of the day.

    Best time
Morning ascents for side light on the track; runs in summer only (in 2026 from 11 May to 29 November).
    Access
About 30 minutes from Alpnachstad, which is about 20 minutes by train from Lucerne or reached by boat from May to October.
  6. 06

    Fräkmüntegg and Krienseregg meadows

The intermediate stations of the gondola from Kriens sit among forest and meadows at mid-altitude, with a summer toboggan run and rope park at Fräkmüntegg. They are gentler, green alternatives for family sessions, and a fallback when the summit is in cloud.

    Best time
Afternoon in summer and autumn; golden hour through the trees.
    Access
Panorama gondola from Kriens; Fräkmüntegg is roughly halfway to the summit.

Seasons

Mid-May to October is the full season: both ways up are open, the Tomlishorn trail is clear of snow and the flowers peak in June and July. Autumn often brings the clearest air and, from October, the chance of a sea of fog below the summit. In winter only the aerial cableway from Kriens runs, the summit is snowbound and some paths close, but a snowy Pilatus above the fog can be spectacular. Each year the lifts pause for maintenance: in 2026, the Kriens gondolas are closed from 19 October to 27 November while the cogwheel railway runs until 29 November.

Time of day

Day visitors come up from about 9:00 and the terraces are busiest from late morning to mid-afternoon. Early morning and the last hours before the final descent are quieter. For sunrise or sunset, stay overnight at one of the two summit hotels: the last regular descents leave in the late afternoon, well before a summer sunset. Sunrise from the Esel looks east over the lake; sunset lights the western faces and the Plateau.

Weather

At over 2,000 metres, Pilatus is often around ten degrees colder than Lucerne and the ridges are exposed to wind. Cloud frequently wraps the summit even when the city is clear, and summer afternoons can bring thunderstorms; morning slots are safer. From October to February the lake basin is often under fog on calm high-pressure days, and the summit usually sits well above it, since the fog top is typically lower than 1,500 metres. The aerial cableway can stop in strong wind. Your photographer will check the summit webcams and forecasts and may suggest switching to the Kriens side, to Rigi, or to another date.

Getting there

There are two ways up. From Kriens, a bus from Lucerne station takes about 15 minutes, then a short walk leads to the panorama gondola to Fräkmüntegg and the aerial cableway to Pilatus Kulm, about 40 minutes in total. From Alpnachstad, reached by train from Lucerne in about 20 minutes or by boat in summer, the cogwheel railway climbs in about 30 minutes. Combining the two with a boat trip is the Golden Round Trip. No cars can reach the summit. Holders of a Swiss Travel Pass receive a discount rather than free travel (50 percent in 2026).

Good to know

Sessions on Pilatus start from CHF 650, the Alpine starting price, which reflects the mountain transport and travel time; tickets for you and the photographer are shown in your proposal. There is no fee for photography on the public terraces and paths. Drones above 250 grams need a permit from Skyguide to fly at Pilatus Kulm because the military airfield at Alpnach is nearby, and the permit takes several days; at Krienseregg and Fräkmüntegg flights are allowed within a set radius. Operator registration is always required and flying over crowds is prohibited. The cogwheel railway strongly recommends seat reservations on fine days.

  • Reserve cogwheel railway seats in advance on sunny summer days; queues form at Alpnachstad.
  • Wear shoes with grip for the Esel and Tomlishorn steps; bring a jacket even in July.
  • For a proposal on the Esel, go early: by late morning the platform is rarely empty.
  • Strong colours stand out against grey rock and blue sky; avoid grey.
  • Hair ties and a light scarf help on the windy ridges.
  • If the summit is in cloud, the forest and meadows at Fräkmüntegg make a good plan B.

Frequently asked questions

Where are the best photo spots on Pilatus?

The Esel summit above the lake, the Tomlishorn ridge, the terraces in front of the summit hotels, the rock windows of the Dragon Path, the cogwheel railway and, lower down, the meadows at Fräkmüntegg. All summit spots are within 35 minutes on foot of the top stations.

How much does a photoshoot on Pilatus cost?

Sessions on Pilatus start from CHF 650, the Alpine starting price. Proposals, sunrise or sunset times and longer sessions cost more, and mountain transport is added; the full figure is in your proposal.

Is the Pilatus cogwheel railway open in winter?

No. The cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad runs only in the warmer months, in 2026 from 11 May to 29 November. In winter you reach the summit by the gondola and aerial cableway from Kriens, which themselves close for a few weeks of maintenance each year.

Can we watch the sunset on Pilatus?

Yes, if you stay overnight at one of the summit hotels. The last regular descents leave in the late afternoon, so a sunset session in summer means a night on the mountain; your photographer plans the timing around that.

Can I fly a drone on Pilatus?

At Pilatus Kulm, drones above 250 grams need a permit from Skyguide because of the nearby Alpnach military airfield, and it takes a few days. Flights are allowed within a set radius at Krienseregg and Fräkmüntegg; registration is always required.

Pilatus or Rigi for a proposal?

Pilatus is rockier and more dramatic, with steps and exposed viewpoints; Rigi is gentler, with meadows and an easy walk to the Känzeli. Both start from CHF 650. Our guide to mountain photo locations compares them in more detail.
