Quick answers

How much does it cost?
Family Photoshoot in Geneva starts from CHF 450. The final price depends on the place, duration, date, time of day, travel and any add-ons such as video, and is stated in your proposal before you book.
How long does it take?
A typical session lasts 1 hour and you receive around 40 edited photos.
What is included?
  • A message or call beforehand about names, ages, mobility and what matters to you
  • A meeting point near the lakefront, with toilets and a café within a few minutes
  • 45 to 60 minutes of photography at the starting price, breaks included
  • Group photos first, then free play, individual portraits and details
Where does it take place?
Popular places include Jardin Anglais and the lakefront; Parc La Grange rose garden; Parc des Bastions; Bains des Pâquis jetty. Your photographer suggests the best spot for your date, the light and the crowds.
When is the best time?
For small children, the best hour is usually the one after breakfast or after the afternoon nap, not sunset: in June the sun does not set in Geneva until after 21.00. A morning start at the Jardin Anglais or Parc La Grange gives soft light and fewer people; a late-afternoon start in summer gives warm light across the lawns while children are still cooperative.
How does booking work?
Send a free request with your place, date and plans. Alpiora checks which photographers are available and replies with a proposal stating the photographer, the package and the exact price. Nothing is booked until you accept.

Geneva is more manageable with children than its international reputation suggests. The lake starts a ten-minute walk from Cornavin station, the quays are wide and level, and the parks on both shores give grass, benches and shade without a long transfer. For a family session that means water, space to run and the Alps in the background on a clear day, without a single steep street.

Families booking here split between Geneva residents wanting a yearly portrait or a new-sibling photograph, and visiting families who want everyone in one frame before continuing along Lake Geneva. Both get the same approach: one or two places close together, a meeting point with a toilet and café nearby, and a photographer who works around naps and snack breaks rather than a fixed script.

Where the session happens

  1. 01

    Jardin Anglais and the lakefront

The lakeside garden at the foot of the Old Town is flat, shaded in places and gives the Pont du Mont-Blanc and the harbour as a backdrop. It fills with tour groups from mid-morning, so it suits a shorter visit rather than the whole session, but the walk along the quay towards the Bains des Pâquis keeps children interested with boats and the yellow Mouettes crossing the water.

Best time: Before 9.00 for an empty garden; the Mouettes keep running through the day if you visit later

  2. 02

    Parc La Grange rose garden

A large lakeside park with lawns sloping down towards the water and a rose garden the city maintains without pesticides, flowering from June into autumn. There is enough open grass for children to run well away from the path, and the park stays green and spacious outside rose season too.

Best time: June for the roses; late afternoon for light across the lawns

  3. 03

    Parc des Bastions

A long, tree-lined park below the Old Town ramparts, with the Reformation Wall on one side and enough width that a family group never feels boxed in by passers-by. The trees give soft, even shade in summer, which helps with babies and grandparents on bright days.

Best time: Late October to early November for autumn colour; midday in summer for the shade

  4. 04

    Bains des Pâquis jetty

The public lido on its stone jetty gives a small lighthouse, boats coming and going, and a buvette with toilets close by, all useful when a family session needs a natural break. In summer it is busy with swimmers, which suits families who want some life in the background rather than an empty frame.

Best time: Early morning for a quieter jetty; any time in the off-season

  5. 05

    Carouge old town

A short tram ride south of the centre, Carouge’s low pastel houses, courtyards and small squares give a completely different, more intimate backdrop for a second setting, and the Saturday market adds colour and something for children to look at.

Best time: Weekday mornings for a quiet town; Saturday morning for the market

Typically included

  • A message or call beforehand about names, ages, mobility and what matters to you
  • A meeting point near the lakefront, with toilets and a café within a few minutes
  • 45 to 60 minutes of photography at the starting price, breaks included
  • Group photos first, then free play, individual portraits and details
  • Around 40 edited high-resolution images in a private online gallery
  • Personal use rights for prints, albums and sharing with family

Preparation

  • Choose the hour your children are usually at their best; after a nap beats the end of a long day out.
  • Bring a snack that does not stain, water and one small toy for attention.
  • Coordinate two or three muted colours rather than identical outfits.
  • Shoes that cope with grass and gravel; most of the route is flat but not always paved.
  • Tell the photographer about a shy child, sensory needs or a grandparent who needs to sit often.
  • Keep the morning light before the session: no big outing right beforehand.
  • Bring a spare top for toddlers; the lakefront and the Bains des Pâquis jetty are tempting on a warm day.

Time of day

For small children, the best hour is usually the one after breakfast or after the afternoon nap, not sunset: in June the sun does not set in Geneva until after 21.00. A morning start at the Jardin Anglais or Parc La Grange gives soft light and fewer people; a late-afternoon start in summer gives warm light across the lawns while children are still cooperative. Weekend mornings by the lake are calmer than weekday evenings, when the quays fill with people finishing work.

Weather

Geneva’s defining weather is the bise, a cold, dry north-easterly wind that can make the open lakefront uncomfortable for small children even on a sunny day, so a session with a strong forecast bise often moves to the more sheltered Parc des Bastions or Carouge. In late autumn and winter a grey layer of low cloud can sit over the city for days; the Old Town and Carouge still photograph well in soft light. In heavier rain your photographer suggests another time within your stay, and how rescheduling works is stated in your proposal.

Getting there

Trains from Geneva Airport reach Cornavin station in about 6 to 7 minutes. From Cornavin, the Jardin Anglais and the Bains des Pâquis are about 10 minutes on foot, and Parc La Grange is a further 20 to 25 minutes along the quays or a short bus ride. Carouge is about 15 minutes by tram from the centre. Children under six travel free on Swiss public transport when accompanied, and the yellow Mouettes water taxis, which cross the harbour on short lines, are usually a highlight for children rather than just transport.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a family photographer in Geneva cost?

Family sessions in Geneva start from CHF 450 for 45 to 60 minutes and around 40 edited photos. Larger groups, longer sessions, weekend slots and travel beyond the centre add to the price. The exact figure is in your proposal before you book.

Where is the best place for family photos in Geneva with toddlers?

Parc La Grange. The lawns are wide and flat, there is shade under the trees, and the rose garden adds colour from June into autumn. The Jardin Anglais and the lakefront towards the Bains des Pâquis are equally flat for a shorter session near the station.

Do we need a permit for a family photoshoot in Geneva?

The City of Geneva states that any use of public space for a shoot, including a family photo session, requires joint authorisation from the city and the canton, requested online at least three working days in advance. Ask your photographer how this is handled for your date; a typical small family session is usually straightforward to arrange in time.

Can grandparents with limited mobility join?

Yes. Say so in your request and the session will be planned on level paths with benches, such as Parc La Grange or the Jardin Anglais, with the group photos taken first while everyone is fresh. Carouge, which involves a tram ride, is then treated as optional.

What if it rains during our Geneva family session?

Light rain photographs well in Carouge’s covered arcades and the Old Town lanes, and children in rain boots often give the most natural pictures. In heavier rain your photographer proposes another time within your stay, and the rescheduling terms are stated in your proposal.

Can we combine family photos with a boat ride on the Mouettes?

Yes, and many children ask to. A short crossing on the yellow Mouettes water taxis fits easily either side of a lakefront session and gives a natural break for a family with young children.

Do you also photograph pregnancies before the baby arrives?

Yes. Many families book a maternity session before the birth, often in a park such as La Grange, and return to the same place for the first family photograph once the baby has arrived.
