Quick answers
- How much does it cost?
- Family Photoshoot in Interlaken starts from CHF 650. The final price depends on the place, duration, date, time of day, travel and any add-ons such as video, and is stated in your proposal before you book.
- How long does it take?
- A typical session lasts 1 hour and you receive around 40 edited photos.
- What is included?
- A message or call beforehand about names, ages, mobility and what matters to you
- A meeting point near the Höhematte, with a café and toilets within a few minutes
- 45 to 60 minutes of photography at the starting price, breaks included
- Group photos first, then free play, individual portraits and details
- Where does it take place?
- Popular places include Höhematte meadow; Aare quays near Interlaken West; Unterseen old-town square; Bönigen lakeshore. Your photographer suggests the best spot for your date, the light and the crowds.
- When is the best time?
- For small children, the best hour is usually the one after breakfast, not sunset: in June the sun does not set here until after 21.00. A morning start on the Höhematte gives soft light and an empty meadow before paragliders and day visitors arrive; a late-afternoon start in summer gives warm light on the Jungfrau while children are still fresh.
- How does booking work?
- Send a free request with your place, date and plans. Alpiora checks which photographers are available and replies with a proposal stating the photographer, the package and the exact price. Nothing is booked until you accept.
Interlaken puts a genuine mountain backdrop within reach of a pram, which is rare. The Höhematte meadow in the centre of town is flat, open and lines the Jungfrau up between the trees, so a family can have a proper Alpine photograph without a single uphill step, a cable car ticket or a long transfer.
Most families here are visitors partway through a Swiss trip, often based in Interlaken for the Jungfrau region, with a smaller number of residents from the Bernese Oberland booking a yearly portrait. Either way, the photographer keeps the route short, plans the group photo for whichever hour the children are freshest, and leaves room for a snack break without the whole session sliding into a meltdown.

Where the session happens
- 01
Höhematte meadow
The large open meadow in the centre of town lines the Jungfrau up between the trees at its southern end, and the flat grass gives children room to run without anyone worrying about a drop or a road. Paragliders land here through the day, which older children often enjoy watching between photographs.
Best time: Early morning for an empty meadow; late afternoon for warm light on the Jungfrau
- 02
Aare quays near Interlaken West
The river between the two lakes runs fast and green-turquoise on sunny days, and the paved footpaths beside it are flat enough for a pram the whole way. A toddler who wants to stop and watch the water rarely needs to be coaxed onward for long.
Best time: Late afternoon, when the water colour is strongest
- 03
Unterseen old-town square
Across the river from the Höhematte, the small square of Unterseen has a church tower, old houses and enough quiet corners for closer portraits once children have had their fill of running around in the open.
Best time: Morning, before day visitors arrive
- 04
Bönigen lakeshore
A short bus ride or a flat walk along the Aare brings you to a quiet stretch of Lake Brienz shoreline with wooden houses and small jetties, and a fraction of the visitors you find at Iseltwald. It suits families who want water in the frame without a queue.
Best time: Morning for light on the water; calm evenings
- 05
Lake Thun shore at Neuhaus
A low, open shoreline west of town where the Aare meets Lake Thun, with reeds and enough flat ground for a family group to spread out. It is quieter than the town centre and works well for a second, more relaxed setting.
Best time: Summer evenings; calm mornings for reflections
Typically included
- A message or call beforehand about names, ages, mobility and what matters to you
- A meeting point near the Höhematte, with a café and toilets within a few minutes
- 45 to 60 minutes of photography at the starting price, breaks included
- Group photos first, then free play, individual portraits and details
- Around 40 edited high-resolution images in a private online gallery
- Personal use rights for prints, albums and sharing with family
Preparation
- Choose the hour your children are usually at their best; a morning after breakfast beats a late afternoon after a mountain excursion.
- Bring a snack that does not stain, water and one small toy for attention.
- Coordinate two or three muted colours rather than identical outfits.
- Shoes that cope with grass and gravel; the Höhematte and Aare paths are flat but not paved everywhere.
- Tell the photographer about a shy child, sensory needs or a grandparent who needs to sit often.
- Keep the morning light before the session: no cable car trip or long hike right beforehand.
- Bring a spare top for toddlers; the riverside and lakeshore spots are tempting on a warm day.
Time of day
For small children, the best hour is usually the one after breakfast, not sunset: in June the sun does not set here until after 21.00. A morning start on the Höhematte gives soft light and an empty meadow before paragliders and day visitors arrive; a late-afternoon start in summer gives warm light on the Jungfrau while children are still fresh. Weekend mornings by the lakeshores are calmer than weekday evenings, when the Höheweg fills with people finishing their day.
Weather
Interlaken sits lower and more sheltered than the valleys around it, so a grey morning in town does not rule out clear peaks higher up, and the reverse also happens. Summer afternoons often build cloud over the mountains, which affects the Jungfrau view from the Höhematte more than the Aare or the lakeshores. If rain is forecast, the photographer can move the session to a better hour or work in Unterseen’s sheltered lanes; how rescheduling works is stated in your proposal. Soft grey light is kind to children’s faces, so a cloudy day is not a reason to cancel.
Getting there
Most sessions start near Interlaken West, close to the Höhematte and the Aare, or Interlaken Ost, close to Lake Brienz and the bus to Bönigen. Direct trains from Bern take about 50 minutes, and children under six travel free on Swiss public transport when accompanied. Bönigen is a short bus ride from Interlaken Ost or a flat 40-minute walk along the Aare; a car is more trouble than help within the town itself.

Find My PhotographerFrequently asked questions
How much does a family photographer in Interlaken cost?
Family sessions in Interlaken start from CHF 650, the Alpine starting price that applies across the Bernese Oberland. Larger groups, longer sessions, weekend slots and a second location such as Bönigen add to the price. The exact figure is in your proposal before you book.
Where is the best place for family photos in Interlaken with toddlers?
The Höhematte meadow. It is flat, open, lines the Jungfrau up between the trees and gives children room to run without any road or drop nearby. The Aare quays leading to Unterseen are equally flat and pram-friendly for a second setting.
Do we need a permit for a family photoshoot in Interlaken?
No permit is needed for a small private family session on the public meadows and paths in and around Interlaken. A larger setup with a crew, furniture or lighting is a different matter, but a typical family shoot with a photographer and a reflector does not require one.
Can grandparents with limited mobility join?
Yes. Say so in your request and the session will be planned on level ground, such as the Höhematte or the Aare quays, with the group photos taken first while everyone is fresh. A lakeshore add-on such as Bönigen stays optional if mobility is limited.
What if it rains during our Interlaken family session?
Your photographer can move a light-rain session into the sheltered lanes of Unterseen, and children in rain boots often give the most natural pictures. In heavier rain the photographer proposes another time within your stay, and the rescheduling terms are stated in your proposal.
Can we combine family photos with a boat trip or a mountain excursion?
Yes, but plan the photoshoot for before or after the excursion rather than in the middle of it, so children are not overtired. A boat crossing to Bönigen or Iseltwald can become part of a longer, multi-location session from CHF 850 if you want photographs on the water as well.
Do you also photograph pregnancies before the baby arrives?
Yes. Many families book a maternity session in Zurich or a similar session before the birth and later return to a place like the Höhematte for the first family photograph with the baby.
