- Where does it take place?
- Popular places include Old village and Gotthardstrasse; Mariahilf chapel; St. Kolumban church; Oberalp Pass and lighthouse. Your photographer suggests the best spot for your date, the light and the crowds.
- How does booking work?

Andermatt lies in the Urseren valley at the crossroads of the Gotthard, Furka and Oberalp routes. The valley is high, wide and almost without trees, which gives pictures a clean, open look very different from the wooded valleys of the Bernese Oberland. The old village still has its granite-paved Gotthardstrasse with the ruts of the post-coach era.
Over the last decade, Andermatt has added a new resort quarter, hotels and a concert hall, and it now attracts visitors who want quiet luxury in the mountains. That makes it a good place for couple photoshoots, luxury holiday photography, family sessions and content creation, with the Oberalp Pass and the Schöllenen gorge a short train ride away.
Andermatt is an Alpine location: sessions start at CHF 650 for 90 minutes, which leaves time for a train up to the pass or a walk into the gorge. See pricing for what changes the price.
Photo spots — Andermatt
- 01
Old village and Gotthardstrasse
Stone and timber houses line the old Gotthard road, paved with granite slabs that still show wagon ruts. The Baroque parish church of St. Peter und Paul, built in 1601–1602, stands at the north-western edge of the centre.
- Best time
- Early morning or late afternoon; in winter, after fresh snow.
- Access
- Five minutes on foot from Andermatt station.
- 02
Mariahilf chapel
A small pilgrimage chapel from 1735–1736 on the slope above the village, built as protection against avalanches. From its terrace you look over the rooftops and along the whole Urseren valley.
- Best time
- Sunset in summer, when the valley catches the last light.
- Access
- A few minutes’ walk uphill from the village centre.
- 03
St. Kolumban church
First built in the 11th century and the most important Romanesque church in the canton of Uri, with a plain stone tower and a meadow setting at the edge of the village. Quieter and simpler than the parish church.
- Best time
- Morning or evening light; any season.
- Access
- A short walk from the village centre.
- 04
Oberalp Pass and lighthouse
At 2,044 metres, the pass has a 14-metre lighthouse that once stood at the mouth of the Rhine in Hoek van Holland, now marking the river’s source area. Lake Oberalp lies beside it. From the pass, a hike of about an hour and a half leads to Lake Toma, the source of the Rhine, at 2,345 metres.
- Best time
- Summer and early autumn; mornings before the pass traffic builds.
- Access
- About 20 minutes by train from Andermatt; the road over the pass is closed in winter.
- 05
Schöllenen gorge and Devil’s Bridge
North of the village the Reuss drops through a narrow granite gorge. The Devil’s Bridge and the Suvorov monument, carved into the rock in memory of the 1799 battle, give a dramatic, historic backdrop with the sound of the river below.
- Best time
- Midday, when light reaches the bottom of the gorge; after rain the river is most powerful.
- Access
- About 30 minutes on foot from Andermatt through the Urnerloch tunnel; the path continues down to Göschenen in about 1.5 hours.
- 06
Andermatt Reuss and Piazza Gottardo
The new quarter across the tracks mixes contemporary architecture with mountain views. For personal branding, content creation or a stylish holiday look it offers clean lines that the old village does not.
- Best time
- Blue hour in winter, when the windows light up against the snow.
- Access
- A few minutes’ walk from the station.

Seasons
From June to September the Oberalp road is open, the valley is green and the lighthouse can be reached by road and rail. October brings golden grass and clear air, but the pass road can close early after snow. From December to April Andermatt is a snow village; the Gemsstock cable car to 2,961 metres runs in the ski season only, and the Oberalp is reached by train.
Time of day
The Urseren valley runs from south-west to north-east, so low morning and evening light travels along it. Village streets work best early and late. The Schöllenen gorge is deep and dark, so it needs the higher midday sun. Plan the Oberalp in the morning in summer, before cars and motorbikes fill the pass.
Weather
Andermatt sits on the main Alpine ridge and gets weather from both north and south. Föhn wind can be strong, and snow can fall well into May and again from October. On the pass, 600 metres higher, it is noticeably colder than in the village. Layers and a windproof jacket are worth packing in any month.
Getting there
From Zurich or Lucerne, take the train to Göschenen on the Gotthard mountain line, then the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn up through the Schöllenen gorge to Andermatt in about 10–15 minutes; the whole trip from Zurich is roughly two hours. The Glacier Express also stops in Andermatt. The Oberalp Pass is about 20 minutes further by train.
Good to know
The Oberalp road usually closes between late October and early December and reopens between late April and mid-May; in the 2025–2026 season it closed on 20 October. The railway runs all year. The Gemsstock cable car is a winter-only lift; for 2026–2027 it is scheduled from 14 November to 18 April. For drones, check the FOCA drone map and keep away from people and wildlife; on the pass, traffic and wind make it difficult anyway.
- Take the train to the Oberalp rather than driving: it is scenic, and the station is right by the lighthouse.
- Pack a windproof layer even for a summer session; the pass is often windy and cold.
- Combine the village and the gorge on foot in one 90-minute session.
- Strong colours such as red, deep blue or mustard stand out in the treeless, green-grey valley.
- In winter, ask for a late-afternoon slot: the snow turns pink and blue as the sun goes down.

Find a Photographer in AndermattFrequently asked questions
How much does a photoshoot in Andermatt cost?
Sessions in Andermatt start at CHF 650, the Alpine floor, for about 90 minutes. Train tickets up to the Oberalp come on top. The final price depends on photographer, date and duration and is stated in your proposal.
Can I visit the Oberalp lighthouse in winter?
Yes, by train: the road is closed in winter, but the railway runs all year and the station is at the pass. In winter the area is part of the ski region and deep in snow, so wear proper boots.
Is Andermatt good for a proposal?
Yes, especially if you want somewhere quiet. The Mariahilf chapel terrace at sunset and the shore of Lake Oberalp are calm choices. Read how proposal photography works and see our proposal guide for Switzerland.
How do I get to Andermatt from Zurich?
By train to Göschenen, then the short Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn ride up through the gorge. The whole trip takes roughly two hours. By car, drive the Gotthard motorway to Göschenen and take the Schöllenen road up.
Can I combine Andermatt with other places?
Yes. Engelberg and Lucerne are both within reach for a longer day, and the Glacier Express connects Andermatt with St. Moritz and Zermatt. A Swiss photo tour can link several places.
Is Andermatt good for families?
Yes. The village is compact and flat, and the chapel and meadows are close by. Keep the gorge walk short with small children, as the path is next to a fast river. See our family photos in Switzerland.
