The Matterhorn stands 4,478 m high on the border between Switzerland and Italy. From the Swiss side, above Zermatt, you see the steep east and north faces with the Hörnli ridge between them, the outline most people recognise. That view faces roughly north-east, which is why the peak lights up at sunrise while the valley is still in shade.

Photographing people with the Matterhorn is a question of three things: which viewpoint, which hour, and whether the summit is free of cloud. A photographer who works here plans the first two and watches the third.

Every Matterhorn session is priced from the Alpine starting price of CHF 650. Most clients combine it with a village walk; proposals have their own page, proposal photography in Zermatt.

Photo spots — Matterhorn

  1. 01

    Riffelsee

The best-known reflection of the Matterhorn: a small lake at about 2,757 m with the peak straight across the water. Because you stand north-east of the mountain, early light falls on the faces you see. The shore is rocky, so photographers pick a flat stone for you rather than the water’s edge.

    Best time
Early morning on still days, roughly late June to October
    Access
Gornergrat Bahn to Rotenboden, then 10–15 minutes downhill
  2. 02

    Stellisee

A wider, flatter lake at about 2,537 m on the 5-Seenweg above Sunnegga, with the Matterhorn to the south-west. It is gentler to reach than Riffelsee and has grassy banks, which makes it easier for dresses and for families.

    Best time
Morning from mid-June to early October
    Access
Sunnegga funicular and Blauherd gondola, then about 15–20 minutes on foot
  3. 03

    Gornergrat

From 3,089 m you see the Matterhorn to the west across the valley, with glaciers and the Monte Rosa massif on the other side. It is the only viewpoint here with a full ring of high peaks, and it works in summer and winter.

    Best time
Morning; in winter the snow makes midday light usable
    Access
Gornergrat Bahn from Zermatt, about 33 minutes; first summer train at 07:00 in 2026
  4. 04

    Schwarzsee

The closest viewpoint most visitors reach: at about 2,552 m the mountain rises almost vertically above the lake, showing the north and east faces and the Hörnli ridge. The small chapel Maria zum Schnee on the shore reflects in the dark water on calm days.

    Best time
Morning; clouds often gather on the summit by midday
    Access
Cable cars from Zermatt via Furi to Schwarzsee, about 20 minutes including changes
  5. 05

    Kirchbrücke in Zermatt

The bridge over the Vispa by the village church gives the Matterhorn at the end of the valley above roofs and river, with no lift ticket needed. It is the most reliable sunrise spot: the summit glows while you stand in soft shade.

    Best time
    Sunrise, all year
    Access
A few minutes on foot from Zermatt station
  6. 06

    Matterhorn Glacier Paradise

At 3,883 m, the top station of the cable cars gives a closer, less familiar profile of the Matterhorn and a glacier setting with snow all year. The altitude is serious: it is cold, windy and not suited to everyone.

    Best time
Clear mornings; check the webcam before buying tickets
    Access
Cable cars from Zermatt via Furi and Trockener Steg

Best time

Seasons

Late June to September gives access to Riffelsee and Stellisee without snow; the lakes are often frozen until June. Late September and early October bring gold larches and often steadier weather. In winter the Matterhorn is white and sharp, and Gornergrat and the village remain easy to reach, but the lakes are under snow.

Time of day

The morning is the Matterhorn’s hour. The faces seen from Zermatt catch the first sun, the lakes are still, and in summer the summit often clouds over by midday. Evening light works too, especially from the village, but the mountain is then more often partly covered. Our sunrise versus sunset guide compares both.

Weather

The Matterhorn makes its own weather. When wind flows past the peak, a banner cloud often forms on its sheltered side and streams off the summit, even when the valley is blue, so a clear forecast is no promise of a clear mountain. Photographers check the live webcams the evening before and at dawn; keep a second date in your trip so the shoot can move.

Getting there

All the viewpoints are reached from Zermatt, which is car-free: arrive by train via Visp, or park in Täsch and take the 12-minute shuttle. From Zermatt, the Gornergrat Bahn serves Riffelsee and Gornergrat; the Sunnegga funicular serves Stellisee; the Matterhorn Express cable cars serve Schwarzsee and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise.

Good to know

The Italian side, where the mountain is called Cervino, shows a different south face above Breuil-Cervinia. It can be reached from Zermatt over the glacier by cable car on the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing, which is closed for maintenance from 7 September to 23 October 2026; bring a passport or ID card. Drones need prior permission within 5 km of the Zermatt heliport and are not allowed near lifts and ski slopes. Lift tickets are paid separately and add up quickly, so ask for them to be itemised in your proposal.

  • Choose the viewpoint by the face you want: Schwarzsee is close and steep, the lakes give reflections, Gornergrat gives the panorama.
  • Look at the Matterhorn webcams the evening before and again at first light.
  • Plan the Matterhorn part of the shoot first thing in the morning and the village part later.
  • Bring gloves and a warm layer: above 2,500 m, dawn can be near freezing even in summer.
  • At Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, take it slowly; the altitude affects some people after a fast ascent.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best view of the Matterhorn for photos?

For reflections, Riffelsee and Stellisee are the two classic lakes. For a close, dramatic view, Schwarzsee sits almost at the foot of the peak. For a wide panorama with glaciers, go to Gornergrat. In the village, the Kirchbrücke over the Vispa needs no ticket.

How often is the Matterhorn covered by clouds?

Often enough that you should plan for it. The summit regularly produces its own banner cloud, and in summer cloud frequently builds by midday. Mornings give the best chance of a clear peak, and a flexible second date helps most.

Can we be photographed with the Matterhorn at sunrise?

Yes. The easiest sunrise spot is the Kirchbrücke in the village. The first regular Gornergrat train in summer 2026 leaves at 07:00, which is after sunrise in high summer but close to it in autumn. Ask your photographer what works for your date.

Can we see the Matterhorn from Italy?

Yes. From Breuil-Cervinia in the Aosta Valley you see the south side of the mountain, known in Italian as Cervino. From Zermatt, the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing links the two by cable car, but it is closed for maintenance from 7 September to 23 October 2026.

How much does a Matterhorn photoshoot cost?

Sessions start from CHF 650 for 90 minutes. Lift tickets for you and the photographer are extra, as are sunrise starts, video and additional time. Your proposal lists everything before you book; see our pricing.

Is the Matterhorn a good place to elope or propose?

Yes, as long as you plan for weather and altitude. The lakes and Schwarzsee are popular for elopements and proposals. Read our Zermatt proposal locations guide for privacy and timing at each spot.
