How does booking work?
Send a free request with your place, date and plans. Alpiora checks which photographers are available and replies with a proposal stating the photographer, the package and the exact price. Nothing is booked until you accept.

Zermatt is a honeymoon stop built around one mountain, and the shoot follows that logic. No petrol cars move through the village, so the photographer plans the route by train, funicular or gondola timetable rather than a car park, and the Matterhorn is visible from much of the centre before you go anywhere at all.

Because Zermatt is car-free and altitude changes the light and temperature quickly, honeymoon sessions here lean on the same starting package as elsewhere, 90 minutes, but the route usually covers less ground: a hotel terrace or the village bridge, then one lift up to a lake or viewpoint, rather than several street changes. Couples who stay three nights or more often add a second, higher session on another day.

This page covers Zermatt specifically. The honeymoon photography hub for Switzerland compares regions, and our Zermatt location guide goes further into the lakes and lifts.

Where the session happens

  1. 01

    Your hotel terrace

Many Zermatt hotels sit with a direct line to the Matterhorn, and a terrace or balcony gives a first, unhurried frame before you have taken a single lift. The photographer confirms access with the hotel in advance, since terraces are guest space rather than public ground.

Best time: Shortly after sunrise, when the summit turns pink before the village gets direct sun

  2. 02

    Kirchbrücke over the Vispa

The small bridge by the village church gives river, rooftops and the Matterhorn in one frame, without a lift ticket. At dawn the peak glows while the village is still in soft shade, which flatters both of you and the mountain equally.

Best time: Sunrise and the half hour after

  3. 03

    Stellisee, on the 5-Seenweg

The best-known reflection lake near Zermatt, at about 2,537 m, mirrors the Matterhorn in still water most mornings before the wind rises, and grassy banks make it easier for a wedding dress than the rockier Riffelsee.

Best time: Early morning from mid-June to early October

  4. 04

    Sunnegga terrace

Reached by a four-minute underground funicular, this terrace at 2,288 m looks across the valley to the Matterhorn and has restaurants nearby, which suits a relaxed session for couples who want the view without a long walk.

Best time: Morning for a clear summit; late afternoon in autumn

  5. 05

    Gornergrat

At 3,089 m the summit station faces the Matterhorn across the valley with a ring of glaciers behind, and the wide platform gives room to work even with other visitors present. It is the natural choice for couples who want one dramatic set of photographs rather than several settings.

Best time: The first train of the day; in winter the low sun makes midday usable too

  6. 06

A second day for two settings

Village and mountain rarely fit comfortably into one 90-minute slot once the funicular and gondola rides are added, so couples who want both often book a multi-location session from CHF 850 or a second, shorter session on another morning.

Best time: Village at sunrise, mountain lake later the same or a following morning

Typically included

  • A planning exchange about your hotel, the length of your stay and which lake or viewpoint matters most
  • Around 90 minutes of photography, usually the village plus one mountain destination
  • Relaxed direction with room for candid moments between the posed frames
  • Professional editing of a curated selection of photographs
  • A private online gallery with high-resolution downloads for personal use
  • Optional extras quoted in the proposal: sunrise on Gornergrat, extra time, video, a second lake

Preparation

  • Book the mountain part of the session for the morning; the Matterhorn is most often clear early and the lakes are calmer before the wind.
  • Bring a warm layer even in August; Gornergrat and Riffelsee can be close to freezing at dawn.
  • Wear shoes you can walk to the lakes in, and change into smarter shoes on the shore if you like.
  • Keep a spare day free in your stay so the mountain part can move if the peak is hidden.
  • If you bring the wedding outfit, plan how to carry it on the funicular and gondola.
  • Muted colours and deep reds stand out against grey rock and snow better than pale neutrals.

Time of day

Mornings are the strongest time in Zermatt for almost every setting: the Matterhorn catches the first light, the lakes are still, and by midday in summer cloud often gathers around the summit. Sunset works in the village and at Sunnegga, but the mountain is then more often partly covered, so couples who most want the Matterhorn in frame usually choose sunrise over sunset here, the reverse of many lower-altitude honeymoon stops.

Weather

The Matterhorn makes its own weather: a clear sky over the village is no promise of a clear summit, since cloud often builds around the peak by midday even in summer. Between 1,600 m and 3,100 m the temperature drops quickly with height, so Gornergrat can be around ten degrees colder than the village. Your photographer usually checks the webcams the evening before and again in the morning, and a flexible second day is the most useful thing a honeymoon itinerary can offer here.

Getting there

Zermatt is car-free, so hotel luggage and photographer alike travel on foot, by electric taxi, or by the mountain railways. From the valley, change onto the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn at Visp; drivers park at the Matterhorn Terminal in Täsch and take the 12-minute shuttle train. From the village, the Sunnegga funicular takes about four minutes and the Gornergrat Bahn about 33 minutes to the summit, with the first regular summer train leaving at 07:00 in 2026.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a honeymoon photoshoot in Zermatt cost?

Sessions start from CHF 650 for about 90 minutes, the same figure as Zermatt’s Alpine starting price of CHF 650. Lift tickets for the photographer, a Gornergrat sunrise start, video and a second lake raise the total, and everything is listed in your proposal before you book.

Which lake gives the best reflection of the Matterhorn?

Stellisee, on the 5-Seenweg above Sunnegga, is the easiest reflection lake to reach and has grassy banks that suit a wedding dress. Riffelsee, below Rotenboden on the Gornergrat line, is higher, rockier and gives a fuller reflection, but takes more walking.

Sunrise or sunset for a honeymoon shoot in Zermatt?

Sunrise, for most of the settings here. The Matterhorn catches the first light and the lakes are calmest early, while cloud often builds around the summit by midday and stays through the evening in summer. Sunset still works well in the village itself.

Can we combine the village and a mountain lake in one session?

It depends on timing: 90 minutes usually covers the village plus one mountain destination such as Sunnegga or Gornergrat. Combining the village with two lakes works better as a multi-location session from CHF 850 or a second session on another morning.

What if the Matterhorn is covered in cloud on our date?

Your photographer checks forecasts and webcams and suggests another morning if your stay allows it. The village lanes and Hinterdorf still photograph well under cloud, so the trip is not lost, but a spare day is the most reliable way to still get the mountain in frame.

Do we need lift tickets for the photographer as well as ourselves?

Yes. Mountain transport is paid separately from the session, for both of you and for the photographer, and is usually itemised as part of your proposal’s travel costs. A standard Gornergrat return runs around CHF 95–135 in 2026 depending on season; check current fares with the railway.

How does Zermatt compare with Lucerne or Interlaken for a honeymoon shoot?

Zermatt centres on one mountain and needs lift tickets for the full effect, while honeymoon photography in Lucerne adds an old town and lake steamers, and honeymoon photography in Interlaken sits between two lakes. Some honeymoon routes cover more than one of these stops.
