Quick answers

How much does it cost?
Photoshoot in Crans-Montana starts from CHF 650. The final price depends on the place, duration, date, time of day, travel and any add-ons such as video, and is stated in your proposal before you book.
When is the best time?
Because the plateau faces south, the sun crosses in front of the mountain view all day.
Getting there
Take the train to Sierre on the main line through Valais, then the funicular from Sierre to Crans-Montana in about 12 minutes; it runs every 20 minutes, and a red line on the pavement leads you from the station in about five minutes.
Where does it take place?
Popular places include Etang Grenon; Lac de la Moubra; Etang Long and the golf course; Lac des Miriouges. Your photographer suggests the best spot for your date, the light and the crowds.
How does booking work?
Send a free request with your place, date and plans. Alpiora checks which photographers are available and replies with a proposal stating the photographer, the package and the exact price. Nothing is booked until you accept.

Crans-Montana spreads across a terrace at about 1,500 metres, high above the vineyards of Sierre and the Rhône valley. The whole plateau faces south, which means long sunny days and a view across the valley to the peaks of the Valais Alps. Pine woods, small lakes and golf fairways fill the gaps between the two resort centres.

This is the French-speaking part of Valais, relaxed and polished at the same time. It suits couple photoshoots, family sessions, holiday photography, proposals and weddings where you want mountains without a steep, cramped valley. Compared with Zermatt or Verbier, distances between spots here are short and mostly flat.

Crans-Montana is an Alpine location: sessions start at CHF 650 for 90 minutes. See pricing for what changes the figure.

Photo spots — Crans-Montana

  1. 01

    Etang Grenon

A small lake near the centre of Montana, with a summer beach, pedal boats and giant letters that everyone photographs. Lively in July and August, calm early in the day and out of season.

    Best time
Early morning in summer; late afternoon in autumn.
    Access
A few minutes on foot from the centre of Montana.
  2. 02

    Lac de la Moubra

A larger lake with a grassy beach and pine woods, where you can hire pedal boats and paddleboards in summer. The open shore gives space for families and relaxed couple pictures.

    Best time
Golden hour on summer evenings, when the pines throw long shadows.
    Access
On the lakes walk, within walking distance of Montana.
  3. 03

Etang Long and the golf course

Etang Long sits beside the Golf-Club Crans-sur-Sierre, whose Severiano Ballesteros course hosts the Omega European Masters each year. From the paths around it you see fairways, larches and the Valais Alps together. Playing areas of the course are private, so ask the club before any shoot on the greens.

    Best time
Early morning or evening; avoid the week of the European Masters.
    Access
A short walk from the centre of Crans.
  4. 04

    Lac des Miriouges

A quiet lake in a protected area, where swimming is not allowed. Reeds, still water and trees make it a calm, natural setting away from the busier shores.

    Best time
    Calm mornings for reflections.
    Access
On the lakes walk between Moubra and Etang Long.
  5. 05

    Cry d’Er and Chetzeron

Above the resort, the alpine pastures at more than 2,000 metres open onto the whole chain of the Valais Alps. Chetzeron, a former lift station turned into a hotel and restaurant at 2,112 metres, is a stylish stop with a terrace.

    Best time
Late afternoon in summer, before the last lift down; winter for snow scenes.
    Access
Cable car from Crans to Cry d’Er, then about 20 minutes on foot to Chetzeron; check the last descent time.
  6. 06

    Plaine Morte glacier

A vast, flat glacier at almost 3,000 metres with a panorama from Mont Blanc to the Matterhorn on clear days. It is the most dramatic backdrop here, but summer access is short.

    Best time
Clear mornings; in summer 2026 the lift ran only from 16 July to 13 August.
    Access
Cable car to Violettes, then the funitel to 2,927 metres, about 30 minutes in total.
  7. 07

    Lac d’Ycoor

A park lake in the heart of Montana, framed by lawns and the resort buildings. Useful for short sessions, children and days when clouds hide the peaks.

    Best time
Any time; blue hour in winter when the resort lights come on.
    Access
In the centre of Montana, on foot.

Seasons

June to September is lake season: green fairways, swimming in some lakes and warm evenings. September and October bring golden larches, clear air and fewer people. From December to March the plateau is under snow and the resort is busy with skiers, with bright sun most days. May and November are quiet in-between months when many lifts are closed.

Time of day

Because the plateau faces south, the sun crosses in front of the mountain view all day. Morning and late-afternoon light give depth to the Alps across the valley; midday is flat and bright. Sunsets are to the west, down the Rhône valley, so evening sessions on the lakes and at Chetzeron are the favourites.

Weather

Central Valais is one of the driest and sunniest parts of Switzerland, and Crans-Montana benefits from it. Clouds are rarer than on the north side of the Alps, but summer afternoons can still bring storms over the peaks. The light is strong at this altitude: plan for sunglasses and avoid shooting at noon in summer.

Getting there

Take the train to Sierre on the main line through Valais, then the funicular from Sierre to Crans-Montana in about 12 minutes; it runs every 20 minutes, and a red line on the pavement leads you from the station in about five minutes. Geneva is roughly two hours away by train, Lausanne less. By car, the road climbs up from Sierre.

Good to know

The lakes and paths are free. Golf-course playing areas are private: ask the club before shooting on them. Lift seasons are short outside winter, and the Plaine Morte funitel ran only a few summer weeks in 2026, so check the Crans-Montana lift timetable before you plan a high-altitude shoot. For drones, check the FOCA drone map, as Sion airport and protected areas are nearby, and keep away from people on the lakeshores.

  • Combine two or three lakes on foot in one session: they are close together and mostly on flat paths.
  • Bring a warm layer for the upper stations, even when it is hot on the plateau.
  • White, cream and pastel colours look fresh against the green fairways and dark pines.
  • Avoid the European Masters week and peak school holidays if you want quiet shores.
  • The funicular from Sierre makes a car unnecessary.

Can I get married or elope in Crans-Montana?

Yes. A photographer can cover a wedding or an intimate elopement on the plateau, from the preparations to the evening light. Civil ceremonies follow Swiss law, so check the requirements with the registry office. See wedding photography and our wedding guide for Switzerland.
