Quick answers

How much does it cost?
Photoshoot in Lake Lugano starts from CHF 390. The final price depends on the place, duration, date, time of day, travel and any add-ons such as video, and is stated in your proposal before you book.
When is the best time?
The water is usually at its calmest early in the morning, which is also when the villages are emptiest.
Getting there
Lugano is the base: direct trains arrive from Zurich HB in just under two hours through the Gotthard base tunnel, and EuroCity trains from Milano Centrale take about 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 20. From the centre, boats leave from the lakefront landing stages; buses go to Gandria and to Morcote.
Where does it take place?
Popular places include Gandria; Olive Trail (Sentiero dell’olivo); On board a lake boat; Morcote lakefront. Your photographer suggests the best spot for your date, the light and the crowds.
How does booking work?
Send a free request with your place, date and plans. Alpiora checks which photographers are available and replies with a proposal stating the photographer, the package and the exact price. Nothing is booked until you accept.

Lake Lugano, called Ceresio in Italian, winds between steep wooded mountains on the border of Switzerland and Italy. About two thirds of it is Swiss. It lies between Lake Maggiore to the west and Lake Como to the east, and its villages have the same look people picture from the Italian lakes: houses stacked above the water, arcades at the shoreline, church towers and palms. It is not Lake Como, but it is the place in Switzerland where that kind of photograph happens naturally.

The settings here are small and intimate rather than grand. Gandria and Morcote are villages of lanes and stairs, the Olive Trail is a footpath, and the lake boats are slow and open. That suits couple photoshoots, engagement sessions and honeymoon photos more than large groups.

Most sessions start from Lugano, where the boats leave from the lakefront. Combining the city with one village is a natural half day; see multi-location sessions, which start from CHF 850.

Photo spots — Lake Lugano

  1. 01

    Gandria

A former fishing village on the north shore of the lake’s eastern arm, its houses built one above another on the rock, joined by narrow stairways and vaulted passages. Terraces sit right on the water, and the village faces south, so it holds sunlight through most of the day. There are no cars in the village lanes, which keeps it quiet once the lunch visitors leave.

    Best time
Morning before the first boats, or the last two hours before sunset; summer weekends are busiest around midday.
    Access
By boat from Lugano in the summer timetable, by bus to the road above the village and then down the stairs, or on foot along the Olive Trail.
  2. 02

    Olive Trail (Sentiero dell’olivo)

A footpath of roughly 3 km between Castagnola, on the edge of Lugano, and Gandria, through olive groves, dry-stone terraces and stretches of Mediterranean vegetation, with the lake always below you. Information boards explain olive growing in Ticino. It gives you a walking session with shifting backgrounds instead of a single viewpoint.

    Best time
Morning in spring or autumn; in summer, early start or late afternoon, as much of the path is exposed to the sun.
    Access
About an hour one way on foot, mostly easy but with steps and uneven stone. Walk it towards Gandria and return by boat or bus. Wear flat shoes.
  3. 03

    On board a lake boat

The boats of the Società Navigazione del Lago di Lugano link Lugano with Gandria, Morcote and other villages. From the open deck you have the water on every side and the mountains changing as the boat turns. A session on board works best as part of a route, travelling between two locations with the photographer.

    Best time
Late afternoon runs for warm side light; weekday departures are quieter.
    Access
From the landing stages on the Lugano lakefront. Full timetable roughly April to mid-October (29 March to 18 October in 2026), reduced service in winter.
  4. 04

    Morcote lakefront

Morcote sits at the southern tip of the peninsula below Monte Arbostora, looking across the water towards the Italian shore. Arcaded houses line the lake road, with small piers and boats moored below. The colours, arches and stone steps give a classic Italian-lake frame in a few metres.

    Best time
Early morning or evening; midday brings the boat and coach visitors.
    Access
By bus from Lugano, or by boat in the summer timetable (slower, more scenic). The lakefront is level; everything else climbs.
  5. 05

    Santa Maria del Sasso, Morcote

Above the village, a long monumental stairway of several hundred steps climbs to the church of Santa Maria del Sasso and its terrace high over the lake. The stairway itself, with the lake opening up behind you, is a strong frame. Beside the church lies the village cemetery; keep sessions to the stairs and terrace.

    Best time
Late afternoon to sunset, when the stairway and church façade take warm light.
    Access
On foot from the lakefront, a steady climb of 10–20 minutes depending on pace. Not suitable for heels or pushchairs.
  6. 06

    Parco Scherrer, Morcote

A garden created by a textile merchant between 1930 and 1956 on the slope above the lake, with palms, camellias and cypresses and a collection of small architectural follies inspired by his travels, from temples to a Siamese-style pavilion. It gives a romantic, slightly theatrical backdrop within a short walk of the lakefront.

    Best time
Spring for camellias and flowering shrubs; morning for soft light and few visitors.
    Access
Short walk along the lakefront in Morcote. Seasonal opening, in 2026 from 14 March to 8 November; check the current conditions for visits and photography before you plan a session there.

Best time

Seasons

April to June is the best balance: gardens in flower, green slopes, the full boat timetable and more room in the villages than in high summer. July and August give the warmest water and longest evenings, but also heat, haze and midday crowds in Gandria and Morcote, so shoot early or late. September and October bring clearer air and golden light on the terraces. From late October the boat service is reduced and some gardens close, but the villages are calm and still reachable by bus.

Time of day

The water is usually at its calmest early in the morning, which is also when the villages are emptiest. Gandria and Morcote both face broadly south, so they keep light well into the late afternoon. For a sunset feel, book the last 90 minutes of daylight and plan the route so that you end at the Morcote stairway or on a returning boat.

Weather

The lake has a mild, Mediterranean-influenced climate by Swiss standards: palms, olives and camellias grow outdoors, and Lugano averages around 2,100 hours of sunshine a year. Rainfall is high, though, roughly 1,500 mm a year, and summer afternoons often bring short, heavy thunderstorms. Summer humidity also creates haze that flattens distant mountains, which is one more reason to shoot in the morning or evening. Clear, windy days with north föhn give the sharpest views across the water.

Gandria is also reached on foot from Castagnola along the Olive Trail. Guests staying overnight in a partner hotel in Ticino receive the Ticino Ticket, which covers regional public transport and gives discounts on the boats. Campione d’Italia, on the opposite shore from Lugano, is an Italian exclave: boats stop there, and you are in Italy when you land, so carry ID.

Good to know

Gandria and Morcote are lived-in villages with narrow lanes; tripods, lighting stands and large groups are impractical, and residents’ doorways and terraces should stay out of the way. Boat tickets are paid separately; check the current SNL fares and timetable. The Lugano side of the lake lies close to Lugano Airport and drones are subject to federal restrictions, so check the FOCA drone map; the southern part of the lake is Italian, where Italian rules apply. A photographer will only offer drone footage where permitted. To check dates, request availability.

  • Plan the route by boat timetable: one wrong departure can cost an hour.
  • Wear flat shoes with grip; Gandria’s stairs and the Olive Trail are uneven stone.
  • Bring ID if the route touches Campione d’Italia or any Italian shore.
  • Soft, warm colours suit ochre and pink façades; avoid busy patterns against the stonework.
  • For a proposal in Gandria or Morcote, go early: by late morning the lanes fill up.
  • Keep a light layer for the boat: the open deck is breezy even on warm days.

Frequently asked questions

Where are the best photo spots on Lake Lugano?

Gandria, the Olive Trail between Castagnola and Gandria, and the village of Morcote with its lakefront arcades and the stairway to Santa Maria del Sasso are the classic settings. A lake boat links them and makes a moving backdrop. From Lugano itself, the lakefront and Monte Brè add wider views.

How much does a Lake Lugano photoshoot cost?

A couple session on Lake Lugano starts from CHF 390 and a honeymoon session from CHF 650. Combining Lugano with Gandria or Morcote is a multi-location session from CHF 850. Boat tickets and extras such as video are added to the photographer’s price; see pricing.

Is Lake Lugano the same as Lake Como?

No. Lake Lugano is a separate lake, about two thirds Swiss, lying between Lake Maggiore and Lake Como. It shares the Italian-lake look of stone villages above the water, which is why it is the Swiss choice for that style of photograph.

Can we do a photoshoot on a boat on Lake Lugano?

Yes, on the regular boats of the Società Navigazione del Lago di Lugano, usually as part of a route between Lugano and a village. The full timetable runs from spring to mid-October; in winter service is reduced. The photographer plans the session around specific departures.

When is the best time for photos on Lake Lugano?

April to June and September to October give the best mix of light, flowers and space. In summer, book early morning or the last hours before sunset to avoid midday heat, haze and crowds in Gandria and Morcote.

Is Lake Lugano good for a surprise proposal?

Yes, particularly Gandria early in the morning or the Morcote stairway at sunset, when few people are around. The photographer arrives separately and stays out of sight. Read more on proposal photography in Lugano.
